QUIZMO Is…? Parker Elementary Presents… . Addition and Multiplication… Using a BINGO card the students will do addition, multiplication, or both in order to get QUIZMO. Here’s how: 1. Each student is given a Quizmo card (that looks the same as a Bingo card). 2. The teacher holds flashcards, some with addition problems and some with multiplication problems. 3. 4. 5. Additional Activities Can Be Found At… As the teacher shows the students the flashcards they will have to try and find the numeric answer on their Quizmo card and place a chip on that number. http://www.gamequarium.com/addition.html When a student gets all of the numbers in a row, column, or diagonal (from corner to corner) they shout out “Quizmo!” and show the teacher their answers. http://www.aplusmath.com/games/ http://www.gamequarium.com/multiplicatio n.html http://www.mathcats.com/grownupcats/idea bankmultiplication.html We do it all again! The students clear their cards and begin a new round. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade MATH DAY 2008! featuring QUIZMO with The Team: Requirements… Quizmo requires that students are able to perform one- and two- digit addition and multiplication questions, as appropriate for their grade level. Terri Parker Andrea Phelps Mallory Worthing Terri Parker, Andrea Phelps, and Mallory Worthing Math Topics Highlighted… How Is This Relevent… The two main math topics that are covered in Quizmo are addition and multiplication. Addition is the combining of two or more sets (in this case numbers or addends) to create one whole set or sum. Multiplication is the combining of one number (or factor) to itself a given number of times to create a whole or product. 1. Addend + Addend = Sum 4 + 6 = 10 Addition and multiplication are key math operations that will be the base for further understanding of more complex skills. This basic information will also build the foundation for future problem solving. 2.Factor x Factor = Product 5 x 3 = 15 (5 + 5 + 5) *In multiplication sometimes the factors have different names. For the problem above the five can also be called a multiplicand and the three can also be called a multiplier. Here are some sample questions that your child might be asked on a New York State math test in 3rd grade: Sample A 227 + 14 A)311 B)241* C)231 D)232 Sample B Kendra paints 4 rows of flowers. She paints 8 flowers in each row. What is the total number of flowers Kendra paints? A)12 B)28 C)32* D)48 For Example: How many times have you gone to the store and had to quickly add up the price of your items to see if you brought enough cash or if you’d stay within your budget? When was the last time you took everyone out to get a snack and had to multiply the price of ice cream cones by the number of kids who were about to ruin their new, clean shirts? When buying diapers how often did (or do) you multiply the number of times you were changing them in a day by seven to see how many would last you for the week… and to see if you’d have enough? New York State Math Standard… The New York State Standards that best apply to Quizmo are listed below and a complete list of all mathematics standards can be found online at: http://www.emsc.nysed.gov/ciai/mst.html 1.N.18 – “Use a variety of strategies to compose and decompose one-digit numbers” 2.N.16 – “Use a variety of strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems using one- and two- digit numbers with and without regrouping” 2.N.17 – “Demonstrate fluency and apply addition and subtraction facts up to and including 18” 3.N.18 – “Use a variety of strategies to add and subtract 3-digit numbers (with and without regrouping)” 3.N.19 – “Develop fluency with single digit multiplication facts” Adding and multiplying are like second nature to adults who use it on a daily basis.
