Task 10 – Exchange essay.
Choose one of the following topics and write a 300-word ‘argument’ essay. Please keep in mind the
‘model’ essays we analysed in class.
1. Paralympics: a way of promoting equal opportunities or a source of
discrimination? Discuss.
2. Are elections sufficient to legitimate the exercise of power of a government?
3. Adoption by homosexual couples: who’s the daddy? Discuss.
4. European enlargement: could the same strategy be applied to the EU’s
relations with countries on the southern shore of the Mediterranean
When you have written the essay send it to your classmate (the email you picked in class) for
correction and analysis. Please send me a copy of the essay, too.
When you receive the essay from your classmate, analyse the essay from the point of view of
structure, argument and support and general organisation. If you are able to, please correct the
language, too. Write comments – both positive and negative – about the essay you have analysed. If
you are unable to make any comments then please fill out the form (ignoring the parts on
references) that you can find on page 257 of your books.
In addition to the points mentioned on p 257 also keep in mind when making your comments such
things as relevance, answering the question, keeping to the point and, not least, coherence.
Don’t worry too much about the use of English – you are not expected to assess this.
Students who were not present at today’s lesson should write the essay and then send it to me. I will
forward it to one of the other students who did not attend.
We will be discussing your work in class in week 3 of period 3 (Friday 21 April if we can’t find
another day/time).
