Top 10 Tips for Completing Applications
1. Eligibility is a Must – carefully read directions and requirements for a scholarship before you
apply. You will not be awarded a scholarship if you do not meet the eligibility requirements.
2. Neatness Counts – make sure that you type or print clearly (typing is preferred). Do NOT
mark through or use correction fluid.
3. Spelling and Grammar – ask someone to proof read your completed application, including
any essays or other attachments. Parents, teachers, and peers can give you great feedback.
4. NO Blanks – never leave a blank spot on an application. Be sure to answer every question
and include all required information. If something does not apply to you, type/write “N/A”.
5. NO Extras – While supplying the required information, be certain NOT to provide additional
information or attachments. Providing unnecessary items may result in immediate
disqualification.
6. Essays – Many scholarship applications will ask you to write an essay as part of the
application process. Essays should by typed, personal and specific to the given topic.
7. Community Service – Keep up with your volunteer hours. This information is frequently
requested on various types of applications. Logs are available in the counselors’ office for
your convenience. While logs are NOT required, it is suggested to have some form of written
record of your time spent. Two hours of community service per month is recommended.
8. Make a Copy – Always make a copy for your records before sending in an application.
9. Deadlines – Be mindful of deadlines, when completing applications.
10. A Reflection of You – Your application is the first impression the scholarship grantor has of
you. Submitting an application on time that is neat and complete will reveal a great first
impression.
