Agreement Descriptions
Articulation Agreements
Articulation agreements are formal, written documents agreed upon by two or more institutions and are designed to build strong
partnerships between community colleges and four-year institutions for specific degree programs. The partnership becomes a binding
agreement between a two-year and four-year institution and specify the common terms, conditions and expectations for students
transferring into the degree program. The agreement outlines specific courses and/or degree programs that when completed
successfully at the sending institution will be accepted in transfer and apply to the graduation requirements for a specified degree
program at the receiving institution.
For example, the agreement will articulate, along with some other stipulations, the exact classes a student should complete at the
community college and letter grades completed at the community college that will transfer to the university. This specific outline of
transferable coursework within the agreement enables students to transfer from the community college to the university comfortably.
The agreements, while maintaining the integrity of the separate institutions may include program requirements, transfer policies and
procedures, admission requirements, length of the agreement and termination provisions.
Affiliation (or Contract) Agreements
An affiliation agreement is between a university and another entity for purposes of providing an educational opportunity for students
generally in a supervisory situation such as a clinical experience, an internship program, or a student teaching assignment. Such
contracts can be with federal agencies (i.e. prisons or Veterans Administration Hospitals), other state entities, school districts or private
companies/businesses. The purpose of such agreements is to memorialize each party’s rights and responsibilities in regards to this
educational opportunity.
Consortium Agreements
A consortium agreement is a written contract between two or more eligible institutions enabling students to take coursework at different
institutions simultaneously for the purpose of completing a degree. Under such an agreement, students may take courses at a host
institution and have those courses count toward the degree or certificate at the home institution. The student’s home institution is the
institution that will grant the student’s degree or certificate and it is also the institution that will process, award, and disburse the
financial aid. In many cases a consortium agreement is for one semester between a student and two institutions.

Dual Degree Programs
A dual degree program is based on a formal agreement within one college/university or between separate colleges/universities.
Students spend 2-3 year in each degree program. After completing all requirements for both programs (usually in four to five year) the
student is awarded two degrees in one of the following combinations:
(1) Associate's and Bachelor's programs - an associate degree from a community college and a bachelor's degree from a partner
university; AS/BS, AA/BA
(2) Dual Bachelor's Degree programs - two Bachelor's degrees; BA/BS, BA/BSN, BA/BSBA
(3) Dual Bachelor's/Master's/Professional Degree programs - a Bachelor's degree and a Master's or Professional degree; BS/MBA,
BS/DDS, BA/JD
(4) Dual Graduate Degree programs - a combination of two graduate level degree programs; JD/MBA, JD/MD, MA/PhD, ME/DE Dual
degrees can be from the same school, or from two different colleges/universities that entered a dual degree agreement; and in the
same major, or in different majors.
International Collaboration Agreements
Agreements signed between a US institution of higher education and partner institution in a foreign country that serve faculty and
students seeking teaching and study opportunities abroad or research collaborations with colleagues at foreign institutions. These vary
in scope and detail based on a variety of factors that make them mutually beneficial to both institutions. These typically are described
in a Memorandum of Understanding.
