to this on your desktop or add the URL to your favorites.
Locate the Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)/Job Safety Analyses (JSA): building/room
location

leave UCLA without checking in.
Walk outside to the lab evacuation site. Take your keys/wallet/purse.

It is highly recommended that the locations of various items be marked on a floor plan of your lab. Many of you
have this document already and it is much easier for new lab workers to get oriented. It is a good idea to post a
copy of this map on the wall of your lab.

Annual training refers to once per calendar year rather than every 365 days.
GENERAL LAB SAFETY RULES:
1. Make safety a priority whenever you work in the lab.
2. Do not work in the lab alone.
3. Before starting a new process, it is your responsibility to get safety training. Be aware and informed. Ask
for assistance.

4. Absolutely NO FOOD, DRINK, GUM, COSMETICS, SMOKING is allowed in the laboratory at any time. Do
not discard food items in the laboratory trash cans as it is automatically assumed that the items were
consumed in the laboratory in the event of an inspection.
5. PPE is required - Always wear close-toed shoes and a laboratory coat. Your skin must be completely
covered from the waist to the toes. Some procedures may warrant further PPE, as indicated by the
material safety data sheet (MSDS), the standard operating procedure (SOP) or the job safety analysis
(JSA) for the material being used, facility policies, regulatory
requirements, or the EH&S Laboratory Hazard Assessment Tool. You must be completely covered from
the waist to the toes at all times in the laboratory.
6. When walking through the corridors, you may only have one gloved hand. Use the ungloved hand to
open doors, push elevator buttons, etc. Do not use gloved hand to answer phones.
7. Laboratory doors are to be kept closed and locked at all times. If you see anyone you do not recognize in
your laboratory, you must confront the person and ask “Who are you and how may I help you?”
