Grant Dollars for You! COMMERCIAL TRUCK DRIVING (CTD) Scholarship Information and Application Purpose The purpose of this grant is to attract qualified applicants into the professional field of truck driving in the greater Houston area. The grants primary goal is to increase the number of Commercial Motor Vehicle operators within the state of Texas by providing hands-on driving, classroom experience, and safety awareness/training needed to be successful in the work force. This scholarship pays all tuition and fees for the CTD course, $2050. Recipients of this award will be responsible for costs related to books, supplies, tests, license fees, etc. (approximately $150). Selection Guidelines Scholarship funds are subject to availability. Applications are evaluated on the following guidelines for each scholarship. Please keep in mind that at times the number of applications received could greatly exceed the number of available scholarships. Applicants for the program MUST meet the following requirements: 1. Be 21 years of age or older. 2. Possess a valid Texas Driver’s License, Social Security Card and Birth Certificate. 3. Be able to meet the guidelines of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations and Noise Emission Requirements, Chapter III – Federal Highway Administration, Department of Transportation – Subpart E – Physical Qualifications and Examinations. 4. Be legally able to travel throughout the State of Texas. 5. Provide adequate proof of competency in English. 6. Pass entrance/random drug/alcohol testing which takes place throughout the program. 7. Must not have any felony convictions. 8. Must not have any misdemeanor convictions involving drugs or violence. 9. Provide a copy of financial need from the Texas Workforce Commission stating benefits. 10. Comply with page 2 of this application form. Application Deadline Applications may be submitted any time from October 1, 2011 through August 1, 2012. Scholarship Application Review A review team will review all applications and make decisions based on backgrounds, interviews, employability and financial need as applicable. . Recipients will be notified by mail or telephone. 1|Page COMMERCIAL TRUCK DRIVING STUDENTS All students must obtain a class A restricted license before the first (1st) day of class. The cost of the class A restricted license is $11.00. You may pick–up a Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver Handbook (free of charge) to prepare yourself. You will need to take Section 14 for the Class A Restricted license (learners permit) before taking the rest of the required written test. This ensures that you are qualified for the steps required by your Truck Driving instructor. The only DPS office available for testing is in Pasadena office located at 2783 Red Bluff Suite 100 (713) 473-3232. - PLEASE NOTE: You will need your original or certified copy of your birth certificate. You will be required to pay for your license before taking the remainder of the required written test. The remaining Sections required will be: Section 2: General Knowledge (Driving Safely) Section 5: Air Brakes Section 6: Combination Vehicles Section 8: Tank Vehicles Section 11: Pre-trip It is recommended that you also take Section 9: Hazardous Materials It is optional for you to take Section 7: Doubles and Triples It is highly recommended that the students in the Day class take all seven (7) Commercial Drivers License written tests and endorsements at least one (1) week before class starts.
