The Alternative Spring Break Program (ASB) provides college-level
undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to join week-long
internship projects in a wide variety of professional settings throughout
the NMNH community. The goal is to place interested and motivated
undergraduate and graduate students, during the week of their spring
break, in a professional work environment at the National Museum of
Natural History where they can: gain practical experience by working in a
professional museum setting; develop new skills by learning from NMNH
professionals; provide a service to the organization by contributing
their time and talents; create professional partnerships; and pursue
their fields of interest related, or not, to their current profession.

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum complex and
research organization composed of 19 museums, 9 research centers, and the
National Zoo. Opportunities are provided for over 900 interns yearly at
its museums, offices, and research facilities. The Smithsonian Tropical
Research Institution (STRI) in Panama, is a bureau of the Smithsonian
Institution based outside of the United States, is dedicated to
understanding biological diversity. Although STRI is based in Panama,
research is conducted throughout the tropics. The Supplementary Research
Award Program is a mechanism to replace the practice of waiving or
reducing STRI fees for visitors. The SRA program is to recognize that in
some cases it is to STRI's benefit to have researchers using facilities
even if they can not pay full fees. The program is to provide
supplementary support only. It is not intended to be a fellowship program
that would provide major support for a visitor's research at STRI.
Annually STRI will set aside funds to cover the program costs.

The Smithsonian Institution is the world's largest museum complex and

yearly at its museums, numerous offices, and research facilities. The
National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) Research Training Program is a
museum-based in-residence program. Through a competitive review process
approximately 21 outstanding students from around the world are selected
each year to participate. Students, in collaboration with their
Smithsonian research advisor, develop and test a scientific hypothesis
and communicate the results through written manuscripts plus oral and
poster presentations. In addition to their research, students
participated in an active curriculum of lectures, behind-the-scenes
tours, technique demonstrations, discussions, and field trips that
focused on exploring natural history science and developing the skills
necessary to become effective researchers and ambassadors of natural
history studies. The NMNH scientific areas include: anthropology, botany,
entomology, invertebrate zoology, mineral sciences, paleobiology,
vertebrate zoology (birds, fishes, mammals, reptiles and amphibians).

Current Closing Date for Applications: May 07, 2014
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will award Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award
(NRSA) Institutional Research Training Grants (T32) to eligible institutions as the primary means of
supporting predoctoral and postdoctoral research training to help ensure that a diverse and highly trained
workforce is available to assume leadership roles related to the Nations biomedical, behavioral and
clinical research agenda. The objective of the T32 program is to prepare qualified individuals for careers
that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. This program supports
predoctoral and postdoctoral research training programs (including those with short term research
training) at domestic institutions of higher education with the T32 funding mechanism. Note that programs
solely for short-term research training should not apply to this announcement, but rather the separate
(T35) NRSA Short-Term Institutional program exclusively reserved for predoctoral and/or postdoctoral
level short-term research training programs (see PA-11-185).

WELCOME
Welcome to the NASA Langley Research Center home of the Langley Aerospace Research Student
Scholars (LARSS) program.
Located in Hampton Virginia and established in 1917, NASA Langley engineers and scientists continue
their award-winning research and development efforts to pioneer the future of flight (including entry,
descent, and landing) in all atmospheres; the characterization of all atmospheres; space exploration
systems and technology; and structural materials concepts, analysis, and integration.
LARSS is a year round (3 sessions) paid, research, internship program for undergraduate and graduate
students − pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It is also a
highly competitive program. We annually received about 1,000 applications from which 200 students are
accepted. LARSS is also a nationally ranked internship program. In 2011 the staff of Vault−Career
Intelligence reviewed over 800 national internships and named LARSS one of its top 10 best internship
programs. For 25 years, the LARSS program continues to help preserve U.S. leadership in engineering
and science by providing exceptional students from across the United States the opportunity to work with
Langley researchers on some of the nation’s most vexing and important challenges and problems.
Please note the NASA LARSS application is not part of NASA SOLAR.
Do not hesitate to contact me or the LARSS program administrator, Ms. Debbie Murray, if you have
questions or need additional information. I can be reached by telephone at 757.864.2491 and by email at

the goals of one or more of American Rivers’ conservation campaigns. The project will fall within one of
four categories: sustainably managing our freshwater resources; restoring rivers (through approaches
such as dam removal) and achieving natural flood protection by restoring the natural functions of rivers,
wetlands and floodplains; conserving America’s heritage by protecting our remaining free-flowing rivers
and connecting communities to their rivers; and achieving resiliency in natural and human communities in
the face of global warming. Conducting an applied research project under the guidance of expert
advocates will provide the Fellow with invaluable experience as they begin their career. Fellows also will
receive lobbying training, have opportunities to participate in meetings with congressional offices and
federal agency officials, and attend congressional hearings. Additionally, Fellows will engage in

The Graduate fellows' intensive work experience is enhanced by weekly leadership training sessions that
allow them to meet with national leaders and engage in substantive policy discussions. In addition,
Graduate fellows produce a public policy brief. Graduate fellows also must organize a policy summit.
Because of the wealth of information, contacts, and political activity in Washington D.C., the Graduate
Fellowship Program offers an excellent opportunity for participants to affirm their career goals. All
participants also receive personal support and guidance from CHCI staff and Alumni Association.

Fleur L. Strand Professional Opportunity Award
Application Deadline: November 8, 2012
Award: $1000 + advance EB meeting registration reimbursement
The Fleur L. Strand Award was established to recognize the achievements of a young physiologist,
(graduate student or postdoctoral), enabling the recipient to attend the APS annual meeting at the
Experimental Biology meeting.
The Award is named in honor of Dr. Fleur L. Strand, Professor Emeritus, New York University. Dr.
Strand was the first to show that stress-evoked hormones, such as adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH),
could have a direct effect on peripheral systems, such as muscle, independent of the adrenal gland. This
effect was demonstrated in developing and regenerating neuromuscular systems. It was previously
believed that ACTH could only act through the adrenal gland.
The award is open to a physiologist working in any area of research. To be considered for the award,
the candidate must be the first author of an abstract submitted to the APS annual meeting and must be a
member of APS at the time of application (either Student or Regular). To receive the award, recipients
must attend EB, present a paper at the meeting, and attend the APS Business Meeting. The awardee
receives $1,000 and complimentary registration for the Experimental Biology meeting.
The annual Fleur L. Strand Professional Opportunity Award will be granted to the top tum Suden
applicant who presents a contributed paper at the meeting. Application deadline coincides with EB
abstract deadline (Nov. 8, 2012). Apply Now

Motorola Mobility Foundation Invites Applications for Empowerment Grants
The Motorola Mobility Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Motorola Mobility, is accepting applications for
the 2012 Empowerment Grants, a funding program designed to help United States-based nonprofit
organizations develop mobile applications and use mobile technology that will help transform and benefit

Successful applications must demonstrate the ways that digital, mobile, and social technology can be
used to further a nonprofit organization’s mission. Examples include producing a crowd-sourcing site for
community resource mapping, creating a digital storytelling application that captures oral histories of a
community, developing a resource for social media use to further engage volunteers, and using new
ideas of “gamefication in education” to engage students.
