Introduction The Faculty of Commerce consists of two schools: The Quinn School of Business, located on UCD’s main campus at Belfield, and The Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business, which is situated on the UCD campus at Blackrock. The UCD Business Schools have developed into the largest and most renowned business schools in Ireland, an acclaim recently endorsed by the Smurfit School of Business becoming the first business school in Ireland to be awarded international accreditation with EQUIS (the European Quality Label for international business schools). Noteworthy for having established the first MBA programme in Europe, the Faculty has also developed important academic links with universities in North America, Europe and Australasia. Over the years, graduates of the Faculty have made a significant contribution to Ireland’s economy and have secured careers in government and in every sector of the country’s business, industrial and professional life. They also hold prestigious positions in the EU, the United Nations, the World Bank, large corporations and wellknown international management consultancy companies. The UCD Business Schools are staffed by academics who have distinguished themselves in Ireland and world-wide. They hold the highest qualifications from the world’s leading business schools, and their business and academic experience enables them to provide a strong professional education for students preparing for a career in business. The Faculty comprises over 100 academic staff associated with the following departments: Accountancy, Banking and Finance, Business Administration, Industrial Relations and Human Resources, Marketing and Management Information Systems. Other departments of the University, including Computer Science, Environmental Studies, Statistics, Mathematics and Economics, contribute to the Faculty’s degree programmes. The Faculty is committed to the development of excellence in teaching and research and to providing an education that embraces a global business perspective, which is highly relevant to today’s commercial realities. From September 2002, the new Quinn School of Business building will house all five business degree programmes and allow the Faculty to deliver business education in a challenging and unrivalled way. To complement the modern syllabus, this building, designed with a special focus on e-technology and e-learning, will ensure that all business students enjoy the benefits of a new and exciting learning environment that will expose them to cuttingedge technologies used in the modern business world. Quinn School students will also enjoy the benefits of small class teaching, which will further enhance the communication between lecturer and student. Online lectures, a personalised student intranet, virtual experiential learning, complete internet access and student laptop ownership will be an integral part of the learning process at the Quinn School. Class notes and coursework will revolve around the laptop ensuring business students acquire excellent IT skills as well as business knowledge. Training on the laptop will be provided for all first year business students prior to the commencement of lectures. In addition to offering the Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science (Economics and Finance) degrees, the Faculty has pioneered a number of inter-faculty programmes such as the Bachelor of Commerce (International), the Bachelor of Business and Legal Studies (BBLS) and the Bachelor of Actuarial and Financial Studies (BAFS), ensuring that students have a wider than ever choice of career paths.
