NZQA Expiring unit standard 5268 version 6 Page 1 of 3 Title Manipulate trigonometric expressions, sketch graphs of trigonometric functions, and solve equations Level 3 Credits 4 Purpose People credited with this unit standard are able to manipulate trigonometric expressions, sketch graphs of trigonometric functions, and solve trigonometric equations. Classification Mathematics > Trigonometry Available grade Achieved Explanatory notes 1 Learning Programme This unit standard can be used to assess outcomes of a learning programme based on achievement objectives from Mathematics in the New Zealand Curriculum, Ministry of Education (Wellington: Learning Media, 1992): Algebra (Exploring patterns and relationships), Level 8, page 164 – sketch the graphs of inverse and/or reciprocal functions and explain relationships between them and the original functions; Algebra (Exploring equation and expressions), Level 8, page 164 – carry out the manipulation necessary to use trigonometric expressions in other areas of mathematics; – find solutions, including the general solution, for trigonometric equations; or from Tauaki Marautanga Pāngarau, Ministry of Education (Wellington: Learning Media, 1994), Taurangi, Taumata 8. Examples of contexts for graphs are circular motion (eg ferris wheel), tides, pendulum motion, bio-rhythms. The skills of this unit standard are some of those that satisfy requirements for Unit 5254, Link mathematical processes and skills in problems. 2 Assessment notes For outcome 1, the standard must be met in at least 3 techniques from the following list: reciprocal or inverse relationships; Pythagorean identities; compound angle formulae; sum and product formulae. For outcome 2, the standard must be met in graphs which include reciprocal or inverse trigonometric functions. For outcome 3, the standard must be met for equations of the form atrig(bx + c) = d where c or d may be 0. Equations may be set in context. Competence in Unit 5243, Apply mathematical processes and skills in problems; Unit 5255, Use trigonometry and trigonometric graphs to solve equations and problems; and Unit 5246, Manipulate algebraic expressions and use algebraic methods to solve problems is recommended before undertaking assessment towards this unit standard. Outcomes and evidence requirements Outcome 1 Manipulate trigonometric expressions. Evidence requirements 1.1 Technique applied achieves purpose. Outcome 2 Sketch graphs of trigonometric functions. Evidence requirements 2.1 Sketch is consistent with function. Outcome 3 Solve trigonometric equations. Evidence requirements 3.1 Solutions are consistent with the equations. Please note Providers must be granted consent to assess against standards (accredited) by NZQA, before they can report credits from assessment against unit standards or deliver courses of study leading to that assessment. Industry Training Organisations must be granted consent to assess against standards by NZQA before they can register credits from assessment against unit standards. Providers and Industry Training Organisations, which have been granted consent and which are assessing against unit standards must engage with the moderation system that applies to those standards. Requirements for consent to assess and an outline of the moderation system that applies to this standard are outlined in the Consent and Moderation Requirements (CMR). The CMR also includes useful information about special requirements for organisations wishing to develop education and training programmes, such as minimum qualifications for tutors and assessors, and special resource requirements.
