NCHS ALUMNI FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP FOR A STUDENT MAJORING IN THE FINE ARTS This scholarship in the amount of $500 and offered by the NCHS Alumni Foundation will be awarded to a graduating senior who plans to pursue a degree in the Fine Arts (e.g., Music, Art, Theater, Film). The scholarship is designed to support a student who intends to make a career in performance, artistic production, and/or teaching. While the scholarship is designed to recognize talent in the arts, an applicant’s academic skills, commitment and service to NCHS, service to the community, need, personal achievements, and individual goals will be taken into consideration. Please Note: Should you receive this scholarship but not enroll as a fine arts major in the fall of 2016, you will forfeit the scholarship, and another applicant will be considered. To claim the monies, you must submit confirmation of acceptance into a fine arts program and/or official declaration of a fine arts major when you submit your fall schedule to the Alumni Board Scholarship Committee. Eligibility To be eligible for this scholarship the applicant MUST: Be a 2016 graduate of NCHS Have been accepted to a 2-year or 4-year college or university Be enrolled as a full-time student (12 semester hours or equivalent in quarter hours or trimester hours in college credit-bearing classes) in the chosen school and attend in the Fall of 2016 Have a current GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0 or higher Submit the following as part of the application process This application form A copy of an official NCHS transcript A personal statement as noted in this application Two letters of recommendation, one from a current or former teacher at NCHS, and one from someone acquainted with the applicant’s academic abilities (this may be another teacher or counselor) Consideration of applications will be confidential. Selection will be made by the Scholarship Committee of the NCHS Alumni Foundation with the approval of the NCHS Alumni Board and will be impartial, with all applicants receiving due and complete consideration. Application materials will not be returned but will be kept by the Foundation for the period of one year before being destroyed. Incomplete applications will not be considered. High School Activities: Clubs, Organizations, Athletics List and describe briefly your level of participation in (leadership, offices held, participation in projects, etc.) non-academic credit clubs, organizations, and/or athletics. High School Honoraries: List any honoraries to which you were invited and accepted membership. Briefly describe your contributions to these honoraries by activities, offices, etc. Volunteer Service to School and Community: List any volunteer service in which you have been involved at NCHS or in the larger community. Briefly describe the type and length of service. Special Recognitions and Honors: [Include here any special achievements in your chosen fine arts field.] List any special honors, awards, or recognitions you have received while attending NCHS. Personal Statement This statement should not exceed two, double-spaced typed pages in 11 or 12-point font with standard one-inch margins. Paper clip the finished statement to the Information Sheet before submission of your application packet. Topic: In your best writing style, discuss (1) who or what has most influenced you to pursue a degree in the fine arts, and (2) in what ways you believe your chosen art can positively influence society and enhance our culture. Letters of Recommendation You should request two letters of recommendation and include them in your application packet. One must be from one of your current or former teachers at NCHS. The other should be from an individual who can comment on your academic abilities, commitment to education, and personal attributes that recommend you as talented in the Fine Arts. Your second recommender may be another teacher or counselor, if you choose. Ask your references to address in their letters your academic abilities and your personal traits that make likely your success in college and as an artist. These letters must be confidential and submitted in signed, sealed envelopes. The recommender should address her/his letter to: NCHS Alumni Foundation Scholarship Committee Note: The letter should not be a generic “To Whom It May Concern” letter. It should be personal and address this scholarship.
