THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT DALLAS
SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT
MIS 6326: DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
SPRING 2000
Presentation Requirements
Objectives
The objective of this presentation is to encourage students to investigate the technical and business aspects of a
database related topic in greater depth than is possible in the classroom given the time constraints. The presentation
will provide students experience in gathering information about technical and business issues and presenting them in
context. Once all the presentations have been turned in, I will make them available to all students through my course
web site. This will enable everybody to view each presentation, and therefore learn from the efforts of all the other
groups.
Requirements
The presentation should be prepared for somebody who may be a user of technology, but is not a “techie”. For
instance, it could be a middle level manager in operations, marketing, or accounting, and would like to understand
(your topic), and find out how it could be useful to them. Therefore, it should be a reasonable mix of technical
details and application of the technology. I should mention that some topics are more technology oriented, and some
are more application oriented. Therefore, some presentations will need to provide more technical details than other
ones. Please provide references to material you have used in your presentation (e.g., books, journals, magazines,
web sites, etc.).
I have assigned a presentation topic to each group (in most cases, a topic is assigned to two separate groups). For
each group presentation, I have also assigned another group to serve as the reviewer for that specific presentation. I
will require each group to prepare and submit their presentation early (deadlines provided below), so that the
reviewing group can study the presentation and provide appropriate feedback. The group preparing the presentation
will then have another couple of weeks to modify their presentation based on the feedback they receive.
Deliverables and Deadlines
April 4 (Tuesday): Each group will submit their first version of the presentation via FTP (details of FTP accounts
will be provided in class). The presentation should be in MS Powerpoint, and consist of approximately 10-15
slides. The rest of the class will be able to view the presentation from the course home page by April 5.
April 11 (Tuesday): Each group will submit their feedback on the presentation for which they have been assigned as
the reviewer. The feedback will be submitted as an MS Word document via FTP.
April 27 (Thursday): Final presentation to be submitted via FTP (MS Powerpoint presentation with a maximum of
20 slides). This should address the suggestions made by the reviewing group.
Grading
Each group will be evaluated on two main criteria.
1. Quality of the final presentation:
Clarity: Can a person who is not familiar with this topic understand and appreciate the value of this presentation?
Is the presentation well motivated?
Organization: Does the presentation have a logical order? Are the main points identified and clearly explained? Is
each part a cohesive, but integral component of the whole presentation?
Depth: Does the presentation leave the reader with a good understanding of the key ideas? Does the presentation
get down to basics, or does it gloss over important concepts?
Breadth: Does it represent a comprehensive research effort or is it simply an ad hoc collection of ideas? Does it
include recent developments?
2. Quality of feedback provided as reviewers:
Did the feedback identify important gaps in the presentation? Did it point out logical inconsistencies? Was the
feedback constructive to the presenters, or was it just high-handed criticism? Did the feedback improve the value
of the presentation to the rest of the class?
