Syllabus

Grade Levels:

Eighth through tenth grade

Number of Periods:

Five periods per week for one year

High School Credit:

Algebra 1 is a state mandated course for high school graduation. Students enrolled in this course will need to pass the New Jersey End-of-Course

Algebra 1 Exam given around May.

Expressions and Equations

Students will be able to…

 simplify numerical expressions using Order of Operations

 solve open sentences using a replacement set

 perform the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and square root on real numbers

 solve single variable equations/inequalities using the properties of equality

 solve absolute value equations/inequalities and compound inequalities

 solve problems involving proportions and percent of change

 solve formulas for a given variable

 solve problems involving weighted averages

Linear Functions

Students will be able to…

 find the inverse of function

 represent relations as a set of ordered pairs, tables, mappings, and graphs

 find the range of a function given a set of domain

 graph linear equations using a table

 use substitution to evaluate a problem involving function notation

 write an equation to represent a given sequence/pattern

 calculate the slope of a linear equation

Algebra I Syllabus 1

 write linear equations given two pieces of information

 graph linear equations/inequalities

 solve multivariable equations/inequalities through the use of systems of equations/inequalities

Polynomials and Nonlinear Functions

Students will be able to…

 perform the basic operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on monomials and polynomials

 simplify polynomial functions by factoring

 solve quadratic equations/inequalities

 use properties of monomials to multiply and divide numbers written in Scientific

Notation

 solve problems involving exponential growth and decay

 extend geometric sequences and calculate geometric means

Radical and Rational Functions

Students will be able to…

 perform the basic operations of simplifying, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of radical expressions

 solve equations involving radicals

 perform the basic operations of simplifying, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational expression

 solve rational equations/inequalities

 find extraneous solutions

Data Analysis, Probability, Statistics, and Discrete Mathematics

Students will be able to…

 find the measures of central variation

 display data using different displays

 calculate the measures of central tendency

 solve problems involving factorial, combinations, and permutations

 find probability of a set of events

 find missing values using the trigonometric ratios
