DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS POSTGRADUATE
SCHOLARSHIPS IN CONFLICT RESOLUTION
The Department of Foreign Affairs and the Irish Research Council for the Humanities
and Social Sciences invite applications for the inaugural scheme of Department of
Foreign Affairs Scholarships in Conflict Resolution. The scheme will support two
candidates to undertake academic research on a theme related to the work of the
Department’s Conflict Resolution Unit, leading to the award of a doctoral degree.
Scholarships carry a stipend of up to €16,000 per annum. The scholarships will be
awarded initially for one year, but subject to terms and conditions, are renewable for
up to two additional years. Fees will also be paid for the duration of the scholarship.
Applicants must be either citizens of Ireland or citizens of a Member State of the
European Union who have been ordinarily resident within Ireland for a continuous
period of not less than 3 years. Recipients must, during the academic year 2008/2009,
be registered in a recognised third-level institution as full-time post-graduate research
students pursuing a doctoral degree by major thesis. Those who are undertaking
taught programmes, or degrees where a thesis is a minor part of the programme, are
not eligible.
Research supported under this scheme must be of direct relevance to the major
operational themes of the Conflict Resolution Unit of the Department of Foreign
Affairs, as outlined in the Statement of Themes. The Department hopes to provide
successful candidates with an opportunity to gain experience of the work of the
Conflict Resolution Unit in the course of their studies.
