Introduction
Oulu University of Applied Science’s School of Engineering is a high-quality engineering educator, strong in
teaching and professional expertise. With more than 2000 students, the School of Engineering provides
professionals to the needs of the North, being the largest and the most versatile school of engineering in the
whole Northern Finland. The School of Engineering has two campuses, one in Oulu and the other in Raahe.
Versatile Expertise
The School of Engineering offers both Bachelor and Master level studies, in Finnish and in English.
At the Oulu Campus there are six different degree programmes leading to a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng):
Automation Engineering, Building Services, Civil Engineering, Information and Communication Technology,
Mechanical and Production Engineering and Medical Engineering. Other Bachelor level opportunities include
Bachelor of Laboratory Services and Construction Management. The Bachelor programmes are mainly taught
in Finnish, but programmes taught in English are under preparation.
On a postgraduate level, the study possibilities include three different degree programmes leading to a Master
of Engineering (MEng): Degree Programme in Civil Engineering, Degree Programme in Industrial
Management and Degree Programme in Information Technology. From these programmes the two latter ones
are taught entirely in English and are open for international applicants.
At the Raahe Campus there are altogether three different degree programmes leading to a
Bachelor of Engineering (Beng): Information Technology, Mechanical and Production Engineering, Information
Technology and Telecommunications. In addition, there are two degree programmes leading to a Bachelor of
Business degree (BBA): Business Economics and Business Information Systems. The degree programme in
Information Technology has been instructed entirely in English for the past ten years, and it continues to
successfully meet the objectives relating to the internationalisation of Finnish higher education.
The scope of each degree programme leading to a Bachelor of Engineering degree (BEng) is 240 ECTS
credits, that is 4 years of study. The Degree Programmes in Laboratory Services, Construction Management,
Business Economics and Business Information Systems consist of 210 ECTS credits and take approximately
3.5 years to complete. The postgraduate Master’s degree programmes comprise 60 ECTS credits and can be
completed within 1-2 years.
In addition to the degree studies, the educational supply includes also professional specialisation studies,
open university studies and short-term supplementary training.
Local and international
Together with other higher education institutions and enterprises in the area, the School of Engineering plays a
key role in the technology, commercial and innovation development of the region. Close connections with
business life and other sectors result in versatile cooperation possibilities and high-quality, up to date
education. Students create connections to the industry, trading, public and service sector already while
studying, having opportunities for placements, projects and thesis work.
In addition to the strong regional role, the School of Engineering is also active on an international level. The
school has a wide international network of partner universities and enterprises in more than 20 different
countries. The broad international cooperation allows versatile study and placement opportunities for both
local and international staff and students as well as opportunities for different project, research and
development activities.
Focus on Research and Development
The basic activities of Oulu University of Applied Sciences’ School of Engineering include research and
development work. The School of Engineering participates in regional and international projects. The objective
of research and development is to improve the quality of teaching and serve the needs of working life.
For example, projects have been or are being carried out in the area of mobile technologies (UbiGo), wireless
instrumentation and networks (ICDNET), e-learning (ViCaDiS) and virtual mobility (MoreVM), software
development (PBOL), vehicle telematics (EADIS), water and waste water processing (CEWIC,

The School of Engineering welcomes international degree students, exchange students as well as teachers
and experts. In addition to high-quality education, the school offers modern and excellent study and teaching
facilities equipped with the latest technology and, of course, a varied leisure time environment and cultural
experiences. Each year there are many international exchange and degree students studying at the School of
Engineering. The Raahe Campus offers degree students the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Information
Technology, which is entirely instructed in English.
The Oulu Campus offers two Master’s degree programmes in English: Degree Programme in Industrial
Management and Degree Programme in Information Technology. The Oulu Campus runs also Englishmedium professional specialisation studies: Business Engineering (30 ECTS cr) and Open Source Software
Technologies (30 ECTS cr).
Exchange students have the possibility to select studies and projects from the Bachelor programmes of the
campuses, and also from the Master Programme in Information Technology. The study opportunities in
English are being continuously developed, and therefore it is advisable to check the website of the School of
Engineering (Oulu and Raahe Campus) for further information about the studies. Experiences of former
international students assure that studying abroad and in the School of Engineering is worth it.
Being interested in active development of the international activities, the School of Engineering is also open for
new, innovative and high-quality collaboration proposals.
