STILLMAN New Student Orientation 2013 Stillman College is excited your plans to join the Stillman community in August 2013. this document is designed to assist you in making a smooth transition into the Stillman community. Please note that orientation and registration activities are required; refer to the schedule below for details Students should arrive on August 10 prepared to stay through the August 19 Confirmation Ceremony. Orientation and residence hall check-in begin in the Stinson Building, Saturday, August 10, 8:30 A.M. The August 10 check-in will end at 2:30 P.M. New Stillmanites are strongly encouraged to check-in during these hours. Female students who report after 2:30 P.M. on August 10 should report to Roulhac Hall; male students should report to Hay Hall or to the hall that was requested on the housing application. How much is the Orientation fee? The 2013 Orientation fee is $50.00; an Orientation Confirmation Form is enclosed. Please review the document for additional information. What are my housing options? All freshman and sophomore students must live on campus. There are two exceptions to this policy: a. Students who did not live in the Residence Halls at any time during the 2012-2013 academic year will not be required to live on campus during the following academic year. b. Students whose permanent address is less than 50 miles from Stillman are not required to live on campus. (Conversely, students whose permanent address is 50 miles or more from Stillman are required to live on campus.) Scholarship Residency Policy 1. Students who receive at least 51% of their financial support from the College must live on campus. This includes students whose combined support from multiple sources is equal to, or greater than 51%. 2. All students who receive 100% of their financial support from the College must live on campus, no exceptions. What are my meal plan options? Students living on campus must enroll in a meal plan; meal plans are also available for off-campus students. Information about meals plans will be available during enrollment management sessions and during fall 2013 orientation. How do I submit my health record and insurance information? Each new student must submit a Stillman College Medical Record form, a copy of both sides of the student’s insurance card, Medicare card, Medicaid card, or parents’ insurance card (if student is still insured through the parents). Parents are strongly encouraged to review current health insurance plans and to provide information to the carrier than will allow your student to remain insured their matriculation at Stillman. The Stillman College Medical Record form is enclosed. A health care provider must perform the examination and must sign the medical form. Full-time students are automatically enrolled in the Stillman College Insurance Plan, which provides limited coverage. The College employs a part-time nurse practitioner in its Health Service; her office is located on the second floor of the Johnson-Robinson Building. Health Service hours of operation will be posted in August. Students living with a chronic illness (e.g., hypertension, diabetes, sickle cell, migraines, asthma, allergies, seizure disorders, cancer, etc.) should en obtain a referral to a physician in the Tuscaloosa area. Contact with the Tuscaloosa physician should be made prior to entry into Stillman. If possible, student should bring a one to two month supply of maintenance medication to Stillman. Please e-mail sdc@stillman.edu to obtain additional information. What do I need to bring to Stillman? Linens for bed, cleaning supplies, a stapler, toilet paper, paper towels and two eight GB flash drives are among the items you will need a Things to Bring List is a part of this mailing. What kind of clothes do I need for orientation and on-campus life? There will be three rituals designed to connect you with the Stillman community. The attire for the rituals is black and white business or church attire. Students should wear comfortable shoes at the ceremonies. Men must wear ties, belts, dress shoes, black slacks, and white shirts to each ceremony. Women must wear black dresses, suits, skirts, or slacks, and dress black shoes. Tennis shoes, jeans, and flip-flops are not appropriate for the ceremonies. Information about Stillman’s Dress Code is enclosed; please share the document with your parents. Each Thursday is Business/ Professional Attire Day. Students and other members of the Stillman community are expected to dress in business attire from 8:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M. How do I identify/protect my valuables? Students are strongly encouraged to engrave identifying marks on valuable items (TVs, VCRs, stereos, etc.) and to record item serial numbers; information; check with residence hall directors for details. Identification of property is useful in case of loss or theft. The College does not accept responsibility for the loss/damage of student property. Stillman students are automatically enrolled in a renter’s insurance policy. Information about the renter’s insurance is available at registration. How do I request accommodations for a disability? Stillman complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Stillman students with documented disabilities are requested to e-mail jcurrie@stillman.edu, Subject line of e-mail should read Student Seeking ADA Information. The student’s name, address, e-mail address, and cell/home phone number should be included. Additional information and forms will be e-mailed or mailed. Students must submit copies of medical and/or other disability information to Stillman College Student Development Center, ADA Information, P.O. Box 1430, Tuscaloosa, AL 35403; documentation can be scanned and e-mailed to jcurrie@stillman.edu. Information must state the manner in which the disability impacts students in an academic environment and in everyday activities. Testing documentation will not be accepted if testing occurred prior to May 2010. An IEP is not acceptable documentation; however, IEP information can be helpful in providing information about services received during grades K-12. Meetings to discuss accommodations must be scheduled by e-mailing jcurrie@stillman.edu no later than August 21, 2013. Meetings can also be scheduled during summer. It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that a meeting has been scheduled and that documentation has been received. Enjoy the rest of your summer.
