Part 2: Graduate students from all major departments and college departments who are obligated to apply for the Graduation Examination must be in accordance with this University Rules and Regulations of Graduation Examination for Graduate Students (with the exception of graduate students who are entitled to be exempted from the examination). Part 3: Students who meet the following criteria are required to apply for the Graduation Examination of Master or Doctoral Degree: Subpart 1: Students who have successfully completed the academic degree program. Subpart 2: The minimum grade point requirements for the required courses and units established by the corresponding major department or college department must refer to the Rules and Regulations of Graduate Students. Subpart 3: Doctoral Degree Program students must meet the qualification of the candidate of Doctoral Degree program. Subpart 4: Application deadline and grade submission timeframe: A: First Academic Semester: Graduate students are required to complete the enrollment registration before January 20. Thesis Defense grade are to be submitted to the Registration Section of Administration Office before January 31. B: Second Academic Semester: Graduate students are required to complete the enrollment registration before July 20. Thesis Defense grade are to be submitted to the Registration Section of Administration Office before July 31. Subpart 5: Application process: A: Graduation Examination Application is required to be approved by the Thesis Advisor. Graduate students must submit seven (7) copies of the thesis and abstract for the Master Degree Program and twelve (12) copies of the thesis and abstract for Doctoral Degree Program. Graduate students must write in the acceptable format and submit to the major department or college department. B: Graduation Examinations are to be conducted with the examination of the Thesis of Oral Defense. Note that written comprehensive examination is required if necessary. C: Graduate students who are pursuing Master Degree in major of fine art or applied technology in the Master Degree Program must prepare the thesis, including the executive summary, in the form of creative work and presentation, along with either the written report or technical report. Part 4: Graduation Examinations are required to be validated, reviewed and approved by a group of Graduation Examination Committee in accordance with the following criteria: Subpart 1: The Doctoral Degree Graduation Examining Committee must consist of five (5) to nine (9) members, with minimum of one third of the committee as non- National Cheng Kung University members. Researchers who conduct studies in the field related to the thesis proposed by the Doctoral Degree Program students are prohibited from being the committee candidate. Thesis advisors are prohibited from serving as the committee conveners. Qualified committee candidate must be approved by the Principal of National Cheng Kung University. The Doctoral Degree Graduation Examining Committee shall meet the one of the following acceptance criteria: A: Professor who had formerly conducted study and/ or lecture in National Cheng Kung University B: Scientist/ professional who had served/ worked in Academia Sinica as academician or analyst/ technician. C: Assistant professor who had formerly conducted study and/ or lecture in National Cheng Kung University or scientists who had formerly served/ worked in Academia Sinica as analyst/ technician assistant and demonstrated outstanding academic achievement. D: Achiever who has successfully acquired a doctoral degree with exceptional academic contribution. E: Achiever who has demonstrated exceptional academic and professional achievement in the field of rare and special study. Qualification standard of acceptance in Section C to Section E are established by the corresponding major department or college department. Subpart 2: The Master Degree Graduation Examining Committee must consist of three (3) to five (5) members. Researchers who conduct studies in the field related to the thesis, creative work, presentation or any reports proposed by the Master Degree Program students are prohibited from being the committee candidate. Thesis advisors are prohibited from serving as the committee conveners. Qualified committee candidate must be approved by the Principal of National Cheng Kung University. The Master Degree Graduation Examining Committee shall meet the one of the following acceptance criteria: A: Professor or assistant professor who had formerly conducted study and/ or lecture in National Cheng Kung University B: Scientist/ professional who had served/ worked in Academia Sinica as academician, analyst/ technician, or assistant analyst/ technician. C: Achiever who has successfully acquired a doctoral degree with exceptional academic contribution. D: Achiever who has demonstrated exceptional academic and professional achievement in the field of rare and special study. Qualification standard of acceptance in Section C to Section D are established by the corresponding major department or college department. Part 5: Qualified examinees shall submit application for Graduation Examination, and it shall be reviewed by the corresponding major department or college department. Information of examination procedure, time, location, and list of the Examining Committee (including members of National Cheng Kung University and non- National Cheng Kung University) are reviewed by the Registration Section of Administration Office and approved by the principal. The examinee will then be notified as late as one week prior to the examination. The examination shall be conducted in a fair, equal, and open manner. Part 6: Thesis papers are to be written in Chinese as the standard requirement. Thesis papers that were once reviewed and examined, approved and granted in formerly acquired degree must not be presented. Thesis papers that are written in language other than Chinese shall be translated accordingly and submitted in Chinese. Part 7: The Graduation Examination of Master Degree will be held once every academic semester. Part 8: Graduation Examination is graded based on the scale of one hundred (100) points, a grade of at least seventy (70) points on a scale of one hundred (100) points is considered as a passing grade. The final determination of grade will only be evaluated once from the examination (defense of the thesis) and calculated based on the average of every single written grade submitted by the members of the Examining Committee. At least two-thirds (2/3) of the examination (defense of the thesis) evaluations determined by the members of the Examining Committee must be acquired to consider as a passing grade. There is no recourse for the graduate students who fail the evaluation. Part 9: In recognition of the importance of the integrity, any thesis papers found to be plagiarized or embezzled will be investigated by the Master or Doctoral Degree Graduation Examining Committee and failing grade will be granted. Part 10: Prospective graduate students who passed the Graduation Examination and did not submit the thesis paper approved by the Examining Committee before the registration of the upcoming academic semester must register in the upcoming academic semester. The graduation date of the Doctoral degree seeking graduate students is set based on the submission date of the thesis paper; the graduation date of the Master Degree seeking graduate students is set based on the last day of the academic semester (either January or June). Graduate students who attended the Graduation Examination but did not complete required courses in the corresponding curriculum for the particular academic semester would not have the grade point from the Graduation Examination recognized, and the Graduation Examination would not be count against the examinee. Part 11: Students who did not successfully obtain a passing grade in the Graduation Examination and have yet completed their academic program are eligible to reapply for the Graduation Examination the next academic semester or the up coming academic year. However, the reapplication of Graduation Examination can only be taken once. Part 12: As per Rule Part 9 subpart 1 in the Rules and Regulations of Awarding Academic Degree, graduate students who seeking Advancement Doctoral Degree Program passed the preliminary qualification examination of Doctoral Degree candidate but did not pass the Doctoral Degree Graduation Examination shall be reviewed by the Doctoral Degree Graduation Examining Committee as per Rule Part 9 subpart 3 “Award of Doctoral Degree”. Part 13: Students who have acquired their Baccalaureate Degree from the undergraduate academic program for more than six (6) years and have professional trained for more than two (2) years are eligible to submit a professional research that is equivalent to the thesis research conducted by the graduate students and apply for the Doctoral Program Entrance Examination for the Advancement Doctoral Degree Program. Students who have successfully obtained a passing grade on the entrance examination must be in accordance with Rule Part 7 “Award of the Doctoral Degree” in the Rules of Regulations of Awarding Academic Degree. The aforementioned professional research/ thesis guidelines are to be determined by each major department/ college department. Part 14: Members of Examining Committee shall attend the meeting. Two third of the Committee shall attend the Graduation Examination. Meeting must be conducted with the attendance of minimum of three (3) members from the Master Degree Graduation Examining Committee; meeting must be conducted with the attendance of minimum of five (5) members from the Doctoral Degree Graduation Examining Committee; meeting must be conducted with the attendance of minimum of one third of the members of non- university/ non- college within the attending Committee. Part 15: In recognition of the importance of the integrity, any thesis paper, creative work, presentation, written report, or technical report found to be plagiarized or embezzled will be investigated. If the investigation is valid and the integrity is compromised, the student’s academic degree will be revoked and the issued Diploma will be confiscated. Part 16: This Rules and Regulations, with any applicable modification, will be executed once the approval is granted.
