Masters Series Leadership Program
What is the Masters Series
The purpose of the Masters Series Leadership Program is to provide an opportunity for
UMHS managers to attain the leadership competencies needed to successfully guide
UMHS through today’s constantly changing environment and into the future.
This workshop is a combination of assessment, discussion, skill practice exercises, and
practical application. It is highly experiential and interactive. Participants learn from each
other, discover through exploration of resources, role play, and storytelling based on
past experiences, and work with each other to complete assignments.
Framework
Change management serves as the foundation for the workshop and the framework for
linkage to all of the other concepts, competencies, and tools. Each participant and his or
her manager select an undertaking connected to the work area that will be analyzed
during the workshop and after.
Performance
This workshop is challenging, demanding, fun and rewarding.
Participants should come prepared for a novel learning experience, one where they will
explore their leadership, learning and communication styles. They will immerse
themselves in a diverse array of topics and information and work with others to build
practical skills.
Each participant should meet with his or her manager within three to six months
following the conclusion of the workshop to measure progress toward the identified
goals.

Masters Series Leadership Program
Meet with your Manager
Your Manager’s Role
Your manager will collaborate with you to set your developmental improvement goals.
These goals may be structured to strengthen existing leadership performance or to
initiate new leadership performance.
Your manager will also help you choose a project that will impact your work area. It can
be an improvement, a new service or a new product. This assignment will be used to
build the skills taught in the course during and after the program.
Suggested Steps and Helpful Resources
1. Make an appointment with your manager. You will need 45-60 minutes
for this meeting.
2. Prepare for this meeting using the Pre-work Agenda Job Aid: (Page 12)
a. Use the tools available to help you and your manager with this process.
Use the Job Aid as a checklist.
b. Establish two or three developmental improvement goals, using the
Masters Series Skill Development work plan found on page 9 and 10.
c. Identify two or three possible projects within your area to develop, i.e.,
new service, new product, and/or opportunity for improvement.
3. Meet with your manager. Together:
a. Write two or three developmental goals
b. Mutually select one of the opportunities/project ideas
c. Decide on when and how your progress is to be reported to your
manager.
4. Complete the Masters Series Pre-work Report on page 14 and email to
Teresa Gasiciel, tgas@med.umich.edu.
NOTE: If you have any questions about your specific project, please contact Jane Pettit,
Learning and Development Manager (HR) at 734-763-0090 or janep@med.umich.edu.

Establish developmental goals
The form on the next page may be used as a tool to help you and your manager
come to agreement on the leadership development goals you will strive to
achieve as a result of the Masters Series workshop.

Review the Masters Series Topics: Identify those that will build the skills
you need. It is not necessary that you have an objective for every topic. It is
best to concentrate on the two or three that will allow you to build skills you
need to attain proficiency. Use the Masters Series Workshop Brochure to
determine to what depth the topics will be covered in the workshop.

Set a Goal: Decide if you are going to enhance skills that you already have
or develop new ones.

Evaluate current competency level: Decide your level of ability for each of
the selected topics.
o Expert: one with special, in-depth skill or knowledge of a particular
subject; considered a master
o Practitioner: one who has applied skill or knowledge repeatedly so as to
be considered proficient
o Novice: one who has awareness of and has not or just started to apply
the skill or knowledge; considered a beginner

Write developmental expectations: Write specific behaviors that you would
like to exhibit upon completion of the learning process.

Identify your expected outcome: Identify what you expect to accomplish
within six months following the workshop. At three months and six months,
meet with your manager to review the expectations and assess the progress
toward achieving your goals.
Note: The established expectations and outcomes should be reviewed by you
and your manager after day 5 of the Masters Series program to ensure they are
valid and reasonable given the actual content.

Select a Project
When you meet with your manager it will be helpful to bring several suggestions. The following
are criteria to help guide you and your manager. The project should be…
 … aligned with the goals of the UMHS and the department.
 … associated with the work area where you work and/or cross functional across business
units.
 … broad enough that it is not a simple task you can do on your own; it must require you
to consider resource requirements such as funding, people, and/or time commitment to
accomplish.
 … have enough impact that it warrants the resources needed to accomplish it.
 … be an improvement to existing processes, a service and/or a product or a new service
offering or new product.
 … stretch you and enable you to work on the performance objectives agreed to by you
and your manager.
The project assignments are used throughout the program so it is critical that you select one to
which you are committed because you will be devoting a lot of energy and time to it.
Note: The selected opportunity/project should be reviewed by you and your manager after day 5
of the Masters Series program to ensure it is still the best choice and scoped appropriately.

Schedule a Review Meeting to Occur After Day 5
Schedule a meeting with your manager to occur within a week after Day 5 of the program to
validate the objectives and the project you agreed upon prior to the start of the program.
Consider the items in the checklist below during your review meeting.
Developmental Goals
 Does each topic goal still apply or should one or all of them be changed?
 Is the current competency level accurate for each topic selected?
 Are the developmental expectations per topic reasonable given the content of the program?
 Are the expected outcomes per topic reasonable given the content of the program?
 Does your learning support each objective?
 Given what you learned about each topic, can you reach the objectives in a six-month
timeframe?
 Given what you learned in the program, would you like to focus on different
topics/competencies?
Project
 Does your in-workshop analysis prove that this project is a simple task that you can resolve
on your own?
 Does your in-workshop analysis indicate that the scope of the project is too large and the
project needs to be divided into smaller, more reasonable chunks?
Should you and your manager decide to change one or all of your objectives, or make a change
to your project, you will need to update the Masters Series Pre-work Report on page 14 and
email the revised report to Teresa Gasiciel, at tgas@med.umich.edu (HSHR Office of
Organizational Effectiveness).
