This workshop is a combination of assessment, discussion, skill practice exercises, and practical application. It is highly experiential and interactive. Participants learn from each other, discover through exploration of resources, role play, and storytelling based on past experiences, and work with each other to complete assignments. Framework Change management serves as the foundation for the workshop and the framework for linkage to all of the other concepts, competencies, and tools. Each participant and his or her manager select an undertaking connected to the work area that will be analyzed during the workshop and after. Performance This workshop is challenging, demanding, fun and rewarding. Participants should come prepared for a novel learning experience, one where they will explore their leadership, learning and communication styles. They will immerse themselves in a diverse array of topics and information and work with others to build practical skills. Each participant should meet with his or her manager within three to six months following the conclusion of the workshop to measure progress toward the identified goals. 687313235 Page 5 of 14 Masters Series Leadership Program Day 1 Thursday Day 2* Friday Day 3 Monday Day 4 Tuesday Day 5* Wednesday Introduction Introduction Introduction Introduction Introduction Leadership Practices Inventory Life lessons of a Leader Leadership perspectives Dark side of leadership Competence Leadership practices inventory Crucial Conversations and Accountability Project Review: Round Robin Change Management Impact of Relationships Change Facts Change Management System and Process Analysis of Past Projects Linkage between Change Management, Topics, and Projects Strategic Thinking Definition, concepts and tools Current State Analysis Financial Overview Health System Economy and Structure Innovation Defining Paradigms, Creativity, Innovation Innovation History and Metrics UMHS Examples (FIGS) Project Work (Optional) Project Work Current State Analysis Holistic view of the project Lean Thinking Definition, concepts, and tools Case Studies Building a Culture of Diversity Discovery of Styles Working with different styles Emotional Intelligence Definition, concepts and tools Dialogue Reflection on Relationships Close Systems Thinking Definition, concept, and tools Aligning the System Loops and Healthcare Systems thinking and change management Performance Metrics Performance Metrics and Quality Tools Critical Decision Making Concepts and tools Project Work Impact Analysis System model Current State Analysis Project objectives and metrics Strategic Planning and Deployment Strategic Plan vs Business Plan Building a Business Plan From Theory to Practice Project Work Downstream Analysis Draft Business Plan Close: Interest-Based Problem Solving Definition, concepts and tools Problem Solving Mentoring LPI Planning Reminder Close Close Close *Topic order is subject to change based on availability of instructors. 687313235 Page 6 of 14 Masters Series Leadership Program Meet with your Manager Your Manager’s Role Your manager will collaborate with you to set your developmental improvement goals. Review the Masters Series Topics: Identify those that will build the skills you need. It is not necessary that you have an objective for every topic. It is best to concentrate on the two or three that will allow you to build skills you need to attain proficiency. Use the Masters Series Workshop Brochure to determine to what depth the topics will be covered in the workshop. Set a Goal: Decide if you are going to enhance skills that you already have or develop new ones. Evaluate current competency level: Decide your level of ability for each of the selected topics. o Expert: one with special, in-depth skill or knowledge of a particular subject; considered a master o Practitioner: one who has applied skill or knowledge repeatedly so as to be considered proficient o Novice: one who has awareness of and has not or just started to apply the skill or knowledge; considered a beginner Write developmental expectations: Write specific behaviors that you would like to exhibit upon completion of the learning process. Identify your expected outcome: Identify what you expect to accomplish within six months following the workshop. At three months and six months, meet with your manager to review the expectations and assess the progress toward achieving your goals. Note: The established expectations and outcomes should be reviewed by you and your manager after day 5 of the Masters Series program to ensure they are valid and reasonable given the actual content. 687313235 Page 8 of 14 Masters Series Leadership Program Masters Series Skill Development Work Plan Master Series Topics Choose 2 or 3 to work on Example: Change Management Goal Current Competency Level Enhance Skills or Develop New Skills Expert/Practitioner/Novice Develop new skills Novice Developmental Expectations Expected Outcome (behavioral statements) (in six months) Enlists others effectively as sponsors of a change Serves as model of the change behavior that is expected of others Utilizes tools to effectively deal with resistance to change Implements a change initiative with full support from sponsor from start to finish and minimal resistance from the target audience Diversity in Styles –what they are (i.e., leadership, thinking, learning) and how to leverage them Emotional Intelligence Change Management Systems Thinking Strategic Thinking Performance Metrics Critical Decision Making 687313235 Page 9 of 14 Masters Series Leadership Program Master Series Topics Choose 2 or 3 to work on Goal Enhance Skills or Develop New Skills Current Competency Level Expert/Practitioner/Novice Developmental Expectations Expected Outcome (behavioral statements) (in six months) Lean Thinking and Constraint Management Innovation Strategic Planning Business Planning Financial Acumen; Health Care Finance Interest-Based Problem Solving People Development We both agree that these are the expectations for performance improvement that have mutually been established. Employee Signature Manager Signature Date Date 687313235 Page 10 of 14 Masters Series Leadership Program Select a Project When you meet with your manager it will be helpful to bring several suggestions. The following are criteria to help guide you and your manager. The project should be… … aligned with the goals of the UMHS and the department. … associated with the work area where you work and/or cross functional across business units. … broad enough that it is not a simple task you can do on your own; it must require you to consider resource requirements such as funding, people, and/or time commitment to accomplish. … have enough impact that it warrants the resources needed to accomplish it. … be an improvement to existing processes, a service and/or a product or a new service offering or new product. … stretch you and enable you to work on the performance objectives agreed to by you and your manager. The project assignments are used throughout the program so it is critical that you select one to which you are committed because you will be devoting a lot of energy and time to it. Note: The selected opportunity/project should be reviewed by you and your manager after day 5 of the Masters Series program to ensure it is still the best choice and scoped appropriately. 687313235. Are the expected outcomes per topic reasonable given the content of the program? Does your learning support each objective? Given what you learned about each topic, can you reach the objectives in a six-month timeframe? Given what you learned in the program, would you like to focus on different topics/competencies?
