MAT 0002 and QEP MATHEMATICS COURSES (MAT 0020, MAT 0024, MAT 1033, MAC 1105) Special rules and restrictions exist for MAT 0002 and our QEP mathematics courses. MAT 0020 and MAT 0024 students must pass (60%) the state's College Preparatory Exit Test, given as their final exam, to pass either of those courses. MAT 0002, MAT 1033, and MAC 1105 students must pass (60%) the departmental final exam to earn a passing grade (C or better) in each of those courses. MAT 0002, MAT 0020, and MAT 0024 have required study sessions and required lab hours. Note that lab hours and study sessions are separate, distinct requirements. It is your responsibility to communicate with the lab instructor who facilitates your study session regarding assignments, activities, and progress of your students. Reviews for final exams and for the CPET are Page 1 2222 available in the Math Lab and on the Math Department’s website (under Resources). DEPARTMENTAL EXAMS Instructors teaching QEP mathematics courses (MAT 0020, MAT 0024, MAT 1033, and MAC 1105) are required to give the departmental exams listed on course syllabi under course schedule. Departmental exams will be ready 1 week prior to date of exam. Instructor will pick up exam from Jackie Estay in a timely manner to make copies. Instructors are responsible for the grading of these exams. Graded exams must be returned to students on the second class meeting after the date of exam. A list of student names with grades must be emailed to Jackie Estay for each departmental exam given by the second class meeting after the administration of each exam. Retakes of departmental exams are not allowed. Make-ups are allowed at the instructor's discretion and must be arranged and administered by instructor. A different form of the exam must be used when giving make-ups. FINAL EXAMS Departmental final exams are given in MAT 0002, MAT 1033, and MAC 1105. The final exam for MAT 0020 and MAT 0024 is the CPET. Final exams MUST be given on the date and time designated by the Office of the Registrar. If your class meets more than three hours per week (such as MAT 0020), you should give your final exam on the earlier of the two time slots that would be designated for your class. More information about the departmental final exams will be provided one week prior to the final exam week. STUDENT PROGRESS REPORTS In addition to instructors emailing student grades to department after each departmental exam, instructors are expected to inform students in writing of their performance in the course. Students earning less than a 70% average at anytime must be referred to the Math Lab to meet with a Math Lab Manager (Arcides Acosta, Maliya Beylin, Jose De Paz, Verdieu Lucas) for additional help. STUDENT RETAKE OF CPT Students who have performed exceptionally well in your classes but scored just below a 60% on the CPET may be given the opportunity to retake the college’s placement test (CPT) for possible placement into the next level. You must email Michelle Evans (mevans@mdc.edu) an explanatory note including each student’s name and particular circumstance. It is your responsibility to contact those students and let them know that they have been given permission to retake the CPT as an opportunity to place out of the course they were not able to pass. Retaking the CPT does NOT change the student’s grade in your class. Students MAY NOT retake the CPET or the departmental final exam. 3333 TEACHING PRACTICES ENCOURAGED AT THE WOLFSON CAMPUS Instructors are strongly encouraged: To give students examples to try on their own in small groups during class, and to walk around and help the students Not to lecture for the entire class period at any level To include real world examples and bring in articles from publications or other materials that will help students connect to the material being taught Be patient with students when asking questions in class Encourage students to visit during office hours STUDENT FEEDBACK (INSTRUCTOR EVALUATIONS) All adjunct faculty members are required to administer Student Feedback Surveys in accordance with College policies and department guidelines in every course.
