Revision Fall 2014
MAT Program Guideline Check Sheet
Today’s Date____________________
_________MAT Program Design – The MAT program includes two programs (routes) to
certification:
--Option 6 – Candidate completes program while teaching in an accredited Kentucky school
--Traditional – Candidate completes program but is not employed as a teacher. Traditional route includes student teaching (
Fall semester – 200 hours in schools and Spring semester 70 full days of student teaching)
*Note – If a candidate in Option 6 loses his/her teaching position and is not hired in another teaching position by August
31st, the candidate will need to be immediately dropped from the Option 6 Program and moved into the Traditional (as per
student request) to continue taking courses within the program. Please know that if the candidate remains in the Traditional
Program, he/she will be required to student teach prior to program completion. A candidate can move back into the Option 6
Program if he/she obtains another teaching position. NOTE: Any time a candidate moves from one program to the other,
he/she is under the KY EPSB admission regulations at that time.
**Please notify Michelle Roberts at m.roberts@moreheadstate.edu or 606.783.2503 of any change in employment
throughout the year. In addition, if you have any questions and/or concerns concerning certification please contact Michelle.
_____”MyMoreheadState”---It is your responsibility to become familiar with the options listed under
the MyMoreheadState account @www.moreheadstate.edu. Your official check sheet can be found on your secure
WebAdvisor account under “Academic Planning” and is listed as Program Evaluation.
_____Payment Plan – Protect Your Schedule
– by signing electronically after registering
for courses. The details of this agreement can be found under your secure online WebAdvisor account. If the statement is
not signed by the deadline (deadline for each term can be found under your online account), your classes will automatically be
dropped by the Registrar’s Office.
_____ Availability of Courses
Some required content courses are not offered every semester. It is
your responsibility to communicate with your content department about when the courses are offered so you can plan
completion accordingly.
_____Course Transfer
No more than nine hours of coursework may be transferred to Morehead from an
accredited institution with approval from the MAT office. A course syllabus or course description must accompany the
request for acceptance. These courses should be okayed (maybe” approved” instead of okayed) by an MAT Coordinator
PRIOR to taking them. The course sub form must be attached to the course description and can be found on the MAT
website at www.moreheadstate.edu/mat under the forms link.
_____GPA
Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in order to continue taking courses within the MAT Program. If a
student falls below the cumulative 3.0 GPA, he/she will be placed on one semester probation. If unable to bring the GPA up
to the 3.0 required GPA within that semester, he/she will be dropped from the program. An accumulative GPA of 3.0 will
need to be present as a requirement of degree completion.
Revision Fall 2014

ANY “I” THAT YOU RECEIVE WILL AUTOMATICALLY BECOME A FAILING “E” GRADE IF THE DATE HAS
PASSED FOR YOUR ASSIGNED COMPLETION OF ANY WORK YOUR INSTRUCTOR HAS ASSIGNED TO
YOU.

COURSE “RETAKES” REMOVE THE ORIGINAL GRADE. THE NEW GRADE YOU RECEIVE FOR RETAKING
THE COURSE WILL BE AVERAGED INTO THE ACCUMULATIVE GPA and THE INFERIOR GRADE WILL BE
OMITTED.

REMEMBER, IF YOU WITHDRAW FROM A COURSE IN WHICH YOU HAVE REGISTERED, YOU MUST
MAKE SURE YOU ARE OFFICIALLY WITHDRAWN by contacting the Registrars’ office at 783-2008. IF
NOT, AT SOME POINT THIS WILL SHOW UP ON YOUR TRANSCRIPT AS A “U” (UNOFFICIAL
WITHDRAWAL) AND WILL BE TREATED AS AN “E” IN THE GPA.
_____Practicum and Module Components All students are required to take the practicum
course/s (EDUC 650/651) within the MAT Program, as well as any associated modules (EDUC 652/EDUC 653) during the
corresponding semester/s. This will be clearly noted on each student’s program evaluation sheet (AKA “online check sheet”
through Web Advisor Acct.). The practicum can be completed as:
-MAT Option 6– Candidate is employed as a teacher and the practicum (not student teaching) is completed while teaching.
–MAT Traditional – Candidate is not employed as a teacher and is assigned to a school. The fall semester will include 200
hours (non-paid) in school / classroom and the spring semester will include 70 full school days in student teaching. During
the two semesters of the practicum, all students will need to attend 8 Saturday On-Site classes (maybe “workshops” instead
of classes as this can be a little confusing to students) on campus from 9 to 4 (across two semesters).
_____School Mentor
Students are placed with a school mentor throughout the practicum/student teaching
experience (1 year). Student school placements are made by the MAT Instructors at the beginning of the fall term and are
subject to change during the year if needed.
_____University Instructor Each student is assigned an MAT Instructor at the beginning of the fall
term for purposes of instruction, support, evaluation, and assessment.
_____School/Teaching Schedules
Students are held responsible for dates and times set by the
student, school mentor, and instructor for the practicum. Any deviation due to any reason must be approved in advance by
the MAT Instructor and school mentor to reschedule.
_____Modules
Module assignments are graded and considered an important part of the practicum experience
and the final grade.
_____On-Site Attendance
On-Site class attendance is mandatory and is a substantial portion of the
overall grade in the practicum. Significant grade reductions will be necessary if you are not present.
_____Criminal Records Background Check
All candidates in the MAT Traditional Program
must complete a criminal records background check when enrolled in EDUC 650. This should be done at the central office in
the district in which student teaching will take place. A copy of the results should be given to the University instructor.
_____Praxis Students are required to pass the Specialty Praxis II exam within the first 12 hours of the
MAT Program. Unsuccessful passing of the Praxis II specialty exam will result in an account hold. The hold restricts the
student from registering for and taking additional courses. The hold will NOT be lifted until successful passing of the
Revision Fall 2014
praxis. **NOTE** Praxis exam score results will not be reported for one month after taking the exam. Please take this into
consideration when needing to register for an exam.
The Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Praxis II exam can be taken at a later date, but will have to be passed in order
to be eligible to begin the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP). Both the Praxis II and the PLT must be passed in
order to issue a 2nd year renewal of the Temporary Provisional Certification.
_____KTIP (Kentucky Teacher Internship Program)
Candidates employed on a
rd
Temporary Provisional Certificate can be recommended for KTIP during their 3 year unless all coursework and testing has
been completed prior to recommendation of the 1st renewal (2nd TP certificate). In this case, it is possible that a candidate
can be recommended for KTIP during their 2nd year. All praxis exams must be passed (including PLT) for eligibility to KTIP
and for issuance of a 3rd Temporary Provisional Certificate. If you are planning to KTIP, the recommendation page must be
included with the TC-TP application and submitted to Michelle Roberts (601 Ginger Hall).
_____Course Substitutions
Course substitutions must be approved prior to taking the course.
Students wishing to substitute “content” or “specialized” area courses must have the sub approved in advance by the content
representative in that particular area (MAT Office can provide contact information). A course description is necessary with
submission.
_____Program Completion
Students must follow the “program evaluation” or “online check sheet”
throughout the program to better determine the graduation date. Students wishing to complete the MAT Program must file
for completion by the date given by the graduate office (www.moreheadstate.edu/graduate). A TC-1 application will need to
be sent to the graduate office in addition to the graduate completion card for final processing. The rank change fee can be
paid by going to the EPSB website.
*NOTE: If at program completion the candidate has completed KTIP, a TC-1 application will be submitted to the graduate
office. Otherwise, if a candidate has not completed KTIP at program completion, a TC-TP application will need to be
submitted to Michelle Roberts (601 Ginger Hall) and the candidate will also indicate on the application that he/she is a
program completer.
_____Ethical Behavior MAT students are held to the same rigorous standard as any teacher employed in
KY. The MAT Program within the College of Education at MSU works closely with every school district in the state of
Kentucky and demands the upmost respect and behavior of each student participating in the practicum experience (EDUC
650/651).
_____ Plagiarism ALL work done by students must be original and subject to careful scrutiny by university
instructors and administration. You may fine more information on the Morehead Home page by searching
Discouraging Plagiarism in Student Papers or referring to this web site for the College of Education’s stance on
plagiarism.
