YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PRACTITIONER SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION Montgomery College Spring Semester 2016 The Career Pathways for Youth Development Practitioners The Montgomery County Council for Children, Youth and Families and the Howard and Geraldine Polinger Family Foundation organized a group of program leaders to convene in 2011 to discuss factors leading to high staff turnover in youth serving organizations. The need to develop a more robust professional development system to address issues such as: supporting career growth, stability within the industry, and professionalizing the field was quickly realized. In 2013, a formal committee was solidified and is now known as The Career Pathways for Youth Development Practitioners (CPYDP). EDUC 160X, Introduction to Youth Development, at Montgomery College: Provides a background in historical, philosophical and cultural perspectives on youth development and youth work. Topics for this course include developing a professional awareness of youth work; identifying and distinguishing between asset building models and deficit based models with a focus on positive youth development; and an overview of youth work professional issues, with emphasis on ethics, values, and professionalism. This course begins on Tuesday, January 26, 2016. Class will meet each Tuesday and Thursday from 12:30 to 1:45 pm until May 15. Located in classroom CS 103 at the Montgomery College Rockville campus, the course will be taught by Dr. Robin Goldstein, along with several special guest speakers. EDUC 250X - Principles and Best Practices in Youth Development: Introduces the essentials of programming for youth development, including creation, delivery and evaluation of high-quality out-of-school-time programs. Topics for this course include curriculum and program development, needs assessments, working with families, funding and budgeting, and program evaluation. This course begins on Tuesday, February 2, 2016. Class will meet each Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 9:20 pm until May 15. Located in classroom CS 017 at the Montgomery College Rockville campus, the course will be taught by Jessica Moore-Solórzano. The purpose of the Polinger Scholarship is to encourage and support those interested in pursuing a greater understanding of the youth development field and the application of best practices. Scholarships in the amount of $300 are available to partially cover the cost of tuition for the EDUC 160X or 250X class. Upon successful course completion a free one-year membership to the Out-ofSchool Time Professional Development training system will also be awarded.
