Kean University Admissions Policies
UNDERGRADUATE ADMISSIONS
The Office of Undergraduate Admissions identifies, recruits, admits and enrolls prospective
freshman, post-baccalaureate, second degree students and international students
who demonstrate persistence, academic success. The office also identifies, admits and
enrolls students for the teacher certification program. Applicants are admitted to Kean on the basis
of academic and personal qualifications. The recruitment and admissions procedures are
designed to enroll the best qualified students for the university. Each applicant is considered
in the light of a secondary school record, both academic and personal, performance on a
Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the ACT (formerly the American College Testing Program) and the
University’s estimate of potential as a student. Other opportunities for admission are possible through the
Exceptional Educational Opportunities Program, designed for applicants who need more academic
preparation. Undergraduate Admissions services include campus tours, onsite decision, high school visits
and individual counseling. Freshmen are admitted for fall and spring semesters. The University expects
that applicants offered admission register for study immediately following acceptance.
GENERAL STATEMENT FRESHMAN ADMISSION
Applicants are admitted to Kean University based on academic and personal qualifications.
Recruitment and admissions procedures are designed to enroll the best qualified students.
Applicants must have satisfactory standing in high school and standardized tests. Kean also values
strength of character, personal initiative, seriousness of purpose, distinction in personal and
extracurricular interests, and a sense of social responsibility. Diversity is a priority at Kean, meeting the
needs of a student body that represents different parts of the U.S., as well as foreign countries.
APPLICATION DEADLINES ARE:
December 1 for spring semester, May 31 for fall semester
1. Complete application and send it to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions witha $60 non-refundable
processing fee or official fee waiver request. The processing fee for international applications is $150. Do
not send cash. Applications may also be completed online at www.kean.edu.
2. Submit official SAT or ACT scores (the College Board code number for Kean University is 2517, the ACT
code number is 2582).
3. Submit official copy of high school transcript. All admission offers for freshmen are contingent upon
receipt of an official high school or G.E.D. transcript that shows date of graduation and successful
completion of all required academic units
4. The high school transcript must show at least 16 completed college preparatory units in:
English 4
Social Studies 2
Science (Laboratory) 2
Mathematics 3
Approved electives in English, Social
Studies, Science,
Math or Foreign Language 5
5. Post-baccalaureate major (PBM) and Teacher Certification applicants are required to submit official
transcripts from all colleges previously attended.
6. Applicants 25 years of age or older, with little or no college background and no SATs, will be
considered through the EPIC Program (Entry Program Into College) as part-time students. EPIC facilitates
the entry or re-entry into higher education among adult applicants. Prospective students
must have been out of school for at least fine years.
Candidates will be invited to take the ACCUPLACER (Placement) Test, which enables an admitted student
to be eligible for registration. Candidates are exempt from taking all or part of the ACCUPLACER
(Placement) Test as follows: Critical Reading is 520 or above; Math is 530 or above.
Candidates denied admission to the University can appeal to the Undergraduate Admissions Office
Appeals Committee for reconsideration. Appeal letters must be received in the Office of ndergraduate
Admissions within 10 days of receipt of the denial letter. If a second request is denied, the University
reserves the right to withdraw applications.
TRANSFER ADMISSIONS
Admission is based on the quality of the candidate's previous college work and the availability of space.
Applicants who are accepted to the University by the Center for Academic Success Division of Transfer
and Readmission Student Services are brought in as intended majors. Upon enrollment, students who
meet the requirements for declaring a major must do so through the academic department which houses
their major. Transfer students must have an intended major for admission.
Kean University does not accept undecided transfer students. Transfer credit evaluations are also
conducted by the Center for Academic Success Division of Transfer and Readmission Student
Services and will accompany the letter of admissions to the University. See Academic

Alternative Freshman Admissions Programs
EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM (EEO)
Applicants eligible to participate in the EEO Program are those who (1) are not admissible to the
University under regular admissions standards; (2) earned standardized test scores (such as the SAT)
that are below the institutional norms; or (3) possess an educational background that requires
improvement of basic academic skills. After admission, all EEO students attend a Pre-Freshman Summer
Program prior to the fall semester of their freshman year. The summer program is designed to
strengthen writing skills, reading and study skills and science and mathematical concepts. Academic
Foundation courses and supportive services in tutoring, academic advisement, financial aid and personal,
social and career counseling begin in the summer program and continue through graduation.
(SSP) SPANISH SPEAKING PROGRAM/PROGRAMA HISPANO
Program created for the Spanish-speaking students who are Limited English Proficient (LEP). Students
take GE courses in Spanish while they complete a rigorous ESL program. Once the ESL program is
completed, or English 1300 (ENG 1300) is completed, students begin taking courses in English while
transitioning into mainstream.
THE EPIC PROGRAM
The Entry Program into College (EPIC) is for adults who understand the importance, value and necessity
of a college education in today’s changing job market and want Kean University to be the place to obtain
an undergraduate degree. EPIC is the admission program for adults, age 25 and older, which offers an
opportunity for adults who demonstrate the potential, motivation and perseverance to be successful in
college to become a Kean student. EPIC applicants must have been away from formal education for at
least five years and must show completion of a high school education with an
official transcript or an official GED transcript. EPIC transfer applicants (those with no more than 15
college credits taken) must also submit an official transcript from each college or postsecondary
school attended. EPIC students enroll part-time, taking less than 12 credits per semester. After the
successful completion of 18 to 24 credits at Kean they then have the option to become a full-time
student, taking 12 or more credits per semester. The EPIC Program provides assistance from
the admissions process, to the selection of initial courses and offers academic advisement
during the first year of enrollment.
INTERNATIONAL ADMISSIONS
Kean University is deeply committed to a strong international presence on campus. Applications for
admission as an international freshman student must be filed in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions
no later than December 1 for the spring semester and May 31 for the fall semester.
International transfer students fill out the normal transfer application and are processed by the Center for
Academic Success Division of Transfer and Readmission Student Services. International students with
transfer credit must have their international university transcripts evaluated by an NACES credit
evaluation service (www.naces.org) for credit to be transferred. International transfer
students must also submit the International Undergraduate Admissions Supplemental Application in
addition to the Transfer Application. Applicants who are not citizens or permanent residents of the
United States who are seeking (F1) U.S. Immigration status may apply for admission to Kean University.
International applicants for freshman admission are requested to submit any available results of the
Scholastic Aptitude Test or the ACT (formerly the American College Testing Program), a statement of
complete financial support and certified translated copies of all academic credentials. The Test of English
as a Foreign Language (T.O.E.F.L.) may be required of those for whom English is not their native
language. The application process is basically the same as for U.S. citizens and permanent residents of
the United States with the necessary exceptions. International students must also submit the
International Undergraduate Admissions Supplemental Application in addition to the Undergraduate
Admissions Application.
ADMISSION OF VETERANS
Veterans are permitted to file applications after the deadline, provided the date of release from active
duty occurred no earlier than two months prior to the application date. Veterans will be expected to
meet all other admissions criteria. The Admissions Office must receive applications within 30 days
before the beginning of the semester the candidate wishes to enroll. Veterans and dependents eligible to
receive educational benefits under the G.I. Bill, must contact the Office of Veteran’s Affairs in Willis Hall,
Room 402B, (908) 737-4124.
VISITING STUDENTS
Visiting students who are enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs at a regionally
accredited college or university must have the home institution certify part IV of the Request
for Registration Eligibility Form available in the Registration Bulletin online. A verification of
current enrollment from the Home Institution may be a substitute for this requirement.
