Local Scholarships
This is a listing of our local scholarships. It is important to write thank you notes to these
people or organizations for providing the scholarships. The first name should receive the
thank you note for the organization or family. They may also be the person to contact for
payment. If not, another name is listed.
1. Preceptor Delta Phi—Pam Smith (217 Countryview, Sterling). The amount of the
scholarship will be $250 per year. A check to the student will be awarded at the
rate of $125 per semester as the scholarship student presents the organization’s
treasurer with a receipt for enrollment expenses.
2. Linda Macy—Teresa Scoles (202 E. Van Buren, Sterling). See the clerk of the
board of education at the district office for the scholarship money. Funds will be
released in August to the school where the student is enrolled.
3. Sorosis—Margie Schmidt (601 Ponderosa Lane, Sterling). See Sterling College
Financial Aid Office.
4. Rose Memorial Scholarship—Dale Rose (219 N. 3rd, Sterling). See the clerk of
the board of education for the scholarship money. $100 will be given to the
recipient upon proof of enrollment.
5. Student Council—Ian Anderson (303 N. 7th, Sterling). See the clerk of the board
of education for the scholarship money.
6. Joe Henry Memorial Scholarship—Helen Henry (214 N. 4th, Sterling). See
Sterling College Financial Aid Office.
7. Julie Lynn Ray Memorial Scholarship—Myrna Ray (114 Fracy, Sterling). See
Sterling College Financial Aid Office. Upon enrollment at Sterling College in at
least 12 hours, payment will be made to the recipient’s account at SC. The
amount of the scholarship shall be determined by all accumulated interest in the
scholarship fund. Sterling College will then match an equal amount of up to
$750.
8. Robert Engelland Memorial Scholarship—John Engelland (1680 Avenue T,
Sterling). See Sterling College Financial Aid Office. $1000.
9. Buddy Oden Memorial Scholarship—Jan Oden (528 N. 6th, Sterling). $500. The
scholarship will be awarded upon graduation from SHS and receiving a receipt
from attending college.
10. JH Smith Memorial Scholarship—(see the clerk of the board of education for the
scholarship money). Payment is made to each recipient upon the school board
receiving proof of enrollment in college of at least 12 hours. Payments shall be in
quarterly installments for each of the four semesters the recipient is enrolled in
college. The amounts are based on the interest earned on the principal of the
Certificate of Deposit for the year preceding the graduation year. All interest that
accumulates on each scholarship after it has been awarded shall also be
distributed to the recipient.
11. American Legion, American Legion Women’s Auxiliary—Don Klein (409 E.
Adams, Sterling), Ashley Duft (324 S 1st, Sterling). Each scholarship is $500.
The award will be paid directly to the student. The student will receive $250 at
the beginning of each semester upon proof of enrollment.
12. STA—STA President (Sterling Teachers’ Association). $250. A check to the
student will be awarded at the rate of $125 per semester as the student presents
the treasurer with a receipt for enrollment expenses.
13. Douglas L. Sillin Memorial Scholarship—Chris Sillin (1309 E. 21st, Hutchinson
67502). This scholarship will be awarded annually in the amount of $500 and be
sent to the college of choice after enrollment acknowledgement. It will be
awarded to a student who plans to attend a fully accredited college full time.
14. Monica Allen Memorial Scholarship—Cindy Lewis (220N. 3rd, Sterling). See the
clerk of the board of education for the scholarship money. This scholarship is
$200 and is awarded in odd numbered years to a student who will be furthering
their education in the area of public service.
15. Kathy Brashear Education Memorial Scholarship—Joanna Munafo (17093
Castello Circle, San Diego, CA 92127. See the clerk of the board of education for
the scholarship money. This scholarship is $1000 to a student attending Sterling
College (preferably in education).
16. Sigma Epsilon Sorority #14185—Mary Nielsen (2220 7th Rd., Alden). This
scholarship is $300. A check will be awarded at the rate of $150 per semester as
the scholarship student presents the sorority treasurer with a receipt for enrollment
expenses.
17. Delbert & Helen Royer Memorial Scholarship—Robert Royer (348 S. 3rd,
Sterling). See the clerk of the board of education for the scholarship money. This
scholarship is $100 and awarded to a student attending Sterling College and is
based on financial need.
18. Bradley M. Brentlinger & Nancy Brentlinger Memorial Scholarship—Donna
Walters (1333 Stonebridge, Hutchinson 67502). See clerk of the board of
education for the scholarship money. This scholarship is $250. Payment is made
to the recipient upon receipt of proof of enrollment in some form of vocational
training.
19. Jason Neumann Industrial Arts Award—Staci Fulbright (1975 15th Rd, Sterling).
See the clerk of the board of education for the scholarship money. This
scholarship is $250. Payment is made to the recipient of proof of enrollment.
20. Maxine Nielsen Memorial Scholarship—Mary Nielsen (2220 7th Rd, Alden
67512). The amount of the scholarship is $500. A check will be awarded for
$250 per semester and can be picked up at the district office once proof of
enrollment is shown.
21. Rice County Association of Retired School Personnel Scholarship—Gladys
Ritterhouse (620 257-8448 or gritterhouse@gmail.com This scholarship is $500.
Payment is made to the college the student will attend upon receipt of proof of
enrollment.
22. Ebenezer Methodist Church—See Mrs. DeWerff for application.
