THE EMERGING SCHOLARS PROGRAM Sponsored by the Department of Multicultural Life and the Macalester Academic Excellence Center MISSION AND VALUES The Emerging Scholars Program (ESP) is designed to increase the number of students from historically underrepresented groups who are selected to receive future opportunities for study abroad/study away, internships, fellowships/scholarships, and admittance to graduate and professional programs. The primary goal of ESP is to assist historically under-represented students during their transition to college as they are entrenched in the important intellectual project of becoming a scholar. Macalester’s academic tradition as a preeminent liberal arts college emphasizes critical thinking across the curriculum. Through the lens of multiculturalism, a core value of the College, Emerging Scholars will also gain a greater understanding of the other core values: academic excellence, internationalism, and service to society. PROGRAM SUMMARY As a program coordinated by the Macalester Academic Excellence Center and the Department of Multicultural Life, the Emerging Scholars Program (ESP) provides first-year students support to ensure a smooth transition into college life. Participants are afforded a unique opportunity to study and fellowship with fellow first-years with similar interest and experiences. ESP students participate in various small group discussions and co-curricular activities throughout the year. Each month, students are expected to attend a colloquium that explores in more details the four components of the program: the intellectual project, social adjustment, identity development, and future opportunities. To enhance the colloquiums, faculty and staff who are committed to student success will facilitate discussion and expand the support network available to ESP students. SCHOLAR MENTORS Scholar Mentors are upper-class student scholars. Each mentor leads a small cluster of first-year Emerging Scholars. The Scholar Mentor is responsible for helping their cluster members become better scholars, connect them to campuses resources, and provide peer advice as they transition into the Macalester community. Scholar Mentors are committed to making each first-year student feel welcome as a person, valued as a student, and encouraged as a community member in the pursuit of holistic intellectual inquiry.
