 Safe check: Which model do I need?
Risk of burglary increases during dark months: ESSA gives advice regarding purchase of a safe
Legends:
Even though not everybody has gold bullions to stow away –
every household should have a solid safe. Important documents, valuables and cash, but also data media, duplicate keys, cheque
and credit cards or the mobile phone, camera and laptop are only really secure in there. When buying one, you should have a close
look and inform yourself in detail about the quality, resistance grade and capacity of the product.
Picture Certification marks:
The blue ECBS quality mark of the ESSA offers orientation in the purchase of a safe. For residential use, respectively, the security
levels S1 or S2 according to EN 14 450 and the resistance grades 0 or I according to EN 1143-1 are normally required (see picture top). The ECBS certification marks according to EN 1047-1 inform about the protection against fire provided by the product (see
picture - below). This is especially important when storage media shall be securely stored.

Safe check: Which model do I need?
Risk of burglary increases during dark months: ESSA gives advice regarding purchase of a safe
FRANKFURT/M., January 2008. The demand for safes goes up during the dark winter months. They shall be big
enough, efficient and above all provide resistance. A “pushover” is only good for the burglar and serves him
the valuables quasi on a silver tray. The European Security Systems Association (ESSA) has developed a safe
check in order to make the selection easier for the consumers.
What is needed: Every household should have a solid safe – for documents, valuables and cash, but also data media,
duplicate keys, cheque and credit cards, the mobile phone, camera or laptop. Many things worth more than a certain
limit are only insured when they are stored in a safe.
Security: Security is the most important criterion. Orientation is provided by the blue ECBS quality marks of the
ESSA. This neutral body for the certification of safes thus guarantees that the product withstands even massive
attacks. For residential use, respectively, the security levels S1 or S2 according to EN 14 450 and the resistance
grades 0 or I according to EN 1143-1 are recommendable; where demands on security are higher or for use in
business and industry, they should be II, III, IV or higher. A safe is a purchase for a lifetime – so it should be slated for
growing requirements.
Capacity: There should be space enough for your laptop or video camera. Models with a capacity of more than 45
litres offer sufficient space, in smaller models, space will soon run out. Please consider here as well that requirements
are growing over time.
Handling: Only a model that is simple to operate will be used every day. Electronic locks are trendy, and there is no
awkward fiddling with the key. Practical shelves and partitions ensure well organized and easily visible storage.
Anchoring: Massive anchoring in the wall or floor is a crucial security factor. Where there is none, the burglars may
even remove the whole safe.
Burglary and fire protection: If sensitive storage media, as e.g., diskettes, DVDs and CD Roms shall be stored in the
safe as well, attention should be paid to both. The blue ECBS certification marks according to EN 14 450 or EN 11431 confirm protection against burglary; the quality mark according to EN 1047-1 confirms protection against fire. Many
models offer both, specific protection against burglary and specific protection against fire, and, as a result, double
security.
Further information on “Safes” is given in a consumer brochure which is available from the ESSA head office and can
be requested by email (info@ecb-s.com) or online.
