Fall 2013
Scholars Program Application
This application is for the Scholars Program only. If you are a new applicant to Santa Monica
College, you must complete a separate SMC application and submit a separate set of official
transcripts to the office of Admissions and Records.
Submit ALL of the following four items along with this completed Scholars Program application by
the deadline, July 3rd. Any applications with missing requirements by July 3rd will not be processed.
1. Provide transcripts showing proof of minimum GPA requirement of 3.0 or higher. (Unofficial
transcripts are acceptable; however, official transcripts will be required later.)
Freshmen Students
 Freshmen applicants with no college work (in progress or completed) must submit
high school transcripts.
 Freshmen applicants enrolled in 11 or less college units must submit high school and
college transcripts and grade check forms for courses in-progress. Grade check
forms may be obtained from our main office or Scholars Program website.
 Freshmen applicants enrolled in 12 college units must submit grade check forms.
 Freshmen applicants with 12 or more college units completed are only required to
submit college transcripts.
Continuing Students
 Continuing students may obtain an SMC unofficial transcript online at
www.smc.edu/admissions.
 Continuing students who have previously attended other colleges or universities
must submit copies of transcripts from all colleges attended. (Admissions policies
require students to declare all colleges attended. Failure to declare all college work
will jeopardize a student’s transfer status.)
 NOTE: The Scholars Program contract may not apply to students with 30+ college
units completed. Students planning to apply this November (2013) for UC fall 2014
admissions are not good candidates for the Scholars Program because they will not
meet the Scholars certification requirements by the time they must submit their UC
application. These students will not be able to enjoy the benefits of the Scholars
Program. Students should minimally be in their second semester of attendance in
the Scholars Program by the time they are applying to transfer.
 The review committee may request some applicants to supply more information.
International Students/Foreign Records
 Students with foreign records must complete 12 college units at a U.S. institution
before applying.
Fall 2013
2. Provide proof of English 1 eligibility.
Eligibility may be demonstrated with proof of any of the following: SMC placement test, AP
test score (3 or greater), or completion of an appropriate English 1 prerequisite course.
3. Supply one letter of recommendation from an instructor, counselor, or high school contact.
The letter should be from someone who can comment to the student’s work ethic and
academic ability.
4. Provide a typed 500-word essay.
Tell us who you were, who you are, and who you would like to be.
Important: Applicants will be screened and cleared through the SMC Office of Student Judicial
Affairs. Students with a record of an infraction of the SMC Student Code of Conduct, AR 4410 and/or
AR 4411, are not eligible for the Scholars Program.
