Music Scholarship Information When can I apply? Kent College offers Music Scholarships to students at ages 11, 14 and 16 corresponding with entry to Years 7, 9 and Sixth Form. What is expected of me? We are looking for musical students. We don’t expect to find the finished product. We want students who are excited by Music and who have a passion for the subject even if your skills are not yet of a high standard. What will I be asked to do? We will ask you to play a piece on your main instrument (or voice) and a second instrument if you play one. We will also ask you to sight-read on your main instrument or voice. We will ask you to sing a song of your own choice to us and then we will ask you some general questions about your musical interests. What standards are expected at each level (Year 7, year 9 and Sixth Form)? We like to see our Year 7 scholars have at least Grade 3; Year 9 scholars have grade 5; and Sixth Formers have Grade 6-7. But if you haven’t reached these standards don’t despair! If you have begun an instrument late and have worked really hard to achieve a lesser grade or have never taken grade exams we would still like you to apply. Remember we are looking for ‘students who are excited by Music and who have a passion for the subject’ and can demonstrate the required level of dedication. How do I apply for a music scholarship? Complete the form attached to this letter. Attach copies of grade exam mark sheets if you have any and/or testimonials from your instrumental or vocal teachers and send them to the Registrar at Kent College. What is a Music Scholarship at Kent College worth? The exact amount of the scholarship is determined by the Head Master in consultation with the Director of Music and can be anything from 10% to 50% of the school fees plus free lessons on two instruments (or voice). We also occasionally offer a Bursary where Instrumental fees are waived. What do I have to do to earn my scholarship when I attend Kent College? We expect you to be a leader for Music. You will attend various orchestral groups and at least one choir as part of your scholarship. But most important of all we need our Music Scholars to show their enthusiasm and excitement in Music to the rest of the school. You will be asked to perform in concerts, chapel services and many other events both in school and at outside events. Are there any bonuses to being a Music Scholar at Kent College? Yes, indeed! You will be given the opportunity to attend concerts, shows and other events specifically organised for our Music Scholars. In recent years scholars have been to the Festival Hall, English National Opera and various musicals in London as well as other events in Canterbury and nearby towns. What happens next? The Registrar will contact you and arrange a time for you to visit the school, meet with the Director of Music and have an audition for the scholarship.
