CURRENT STATUS
Despite its short history, the Faculty of Medicine has gained an important role in
education and health services among the medical faculties in Turkey.
The medical campus is located in Balcova, a district in the western part of the
city. The faculty consists of a university hospital with 764 beds, modern equipments and
laboratories, which serve to whole Aegean Region of Turkey. The hospital was
monitored internationally and accepted as one of three service provider hospitals in
Turkey for Blue Cross Blue Shield Health Association. The campus has also the School
of Nursing, the School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation, the School of Health
Services, Institutes of Health Sciences, Oncology, Dialysis and Transplantation, as well
as a medical library, restaurants and cafes for students, teaching staff, patients and
visitors.
Regarding human resources, 346 academic staff members, more than 400
residents and 774 students are currently enrolled in the faculty. Additionally hundreds of
postgraduate students, administrative employees, nurses, etc give the campus the
character of a small town.
LANGUAGE
The medium of instruction at the Faculty is Turkish, but the students should have
proficiency in English. The students who are not proficient in English are required to take
one academic year long English preparatory language course before starting their
undergraduate medical education. The academic staff and residents are also required to
be competent in English. This fact creates a favourable environment for international
exchanges and improves the dialogue with foreign visitors.

B. NEW CURRICULUM OF DOKUZ EYLUL UNIVERSITY
FACULTY OF MEDICINE
Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine (DEUFM), has made a fundamental
change in its undergraduate medical curriculum from traditional to Problem-based
Learning (PBL) for the first time in 1997.
In 1996, the Academic Board of DEUFM agreed on a basic change to PBL
curriculum. Some members of the educational committees, in preparation for the
curriculum change, visited centres with considerable PBL experience such as Dundee,
Liverpool and New Mexico Medical Schools. International experts were invited to give
seminars on PBL philosophy and processes. Meanwhile, Trainers Training Committee of
DEUFM carried out faculty development programs. The Curriculum Committee
consulted the views of academic departments of DEUFM and the Turkish Medical
Association while determining the knowledge and skills requirements for the training of a
contemporary physician.
EDUCATIONAL GOALS OF DEUFM
The curriculum of DEUFM has the following educational goals:
To educate students with basic scientific knowledge, attitude and skills required
for providing an efficient primary health care service:
-
who can assess an individual as a whole with his/her biological, psychological
and social environment,
-
who have adequate knowledge to prioritise the health problems of the
community and to develop solutions for them.
-
who can analyse the health patterns and practice in any discipline,
-
who learn how to learn and understand the need for life-long learning,
Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, Faculty of Medicine, Information Package 2003-2004
11
-
who know the health organisations and the roles of the health personnel and
develop efficient relationships and learn the methods of community
participation,
-
who are eager to develop their career, keep up to date with scientific
developments and contribute to the progress of science.
CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CURRICULUM
Through PBL sessions, the curriculum focuses on knowledge, comprehension,
application, analysis and evaluation in the cognitive domain. Professional values-ethics
and communication skills practical make up the affective domain of the curriculum.
Competency-based approach is used in the implementation of basic clinical skills and
practicals. Community-based education activities start in the first year and are carried on
until the end of medical education. The percentage of time allocated to the activities of
community-based education varies between 10.0% and 16.7% in each year.
The curriculum is both horizontally and vertically integrated. The integration of
clinical and basic sciences is meticulously considered and new contents are built upon
prior knowledge and skills. In order to attain an appropriate structure of knowledge, the
educational principles of the curriculum demand a smooth transition from basic sciences
to clinical sciences and from normal functioning to pathology.
The curriculum is structured on a modular basis. The PBL sessions are the main
focus of the modules. The weekly schedule of a module allows several educational
activities such as PBL sessions, lectures, field studies, communication skills courses,
clinical skills courses, ethic courses, self-study periods. Most of the educational activities
such as lectures, clinical skills and practicals are structured around the scenarios of the
PBL sessions. The lectures are limited to one hour a day and aim to support PBL
sessions and students’ self-study processes. The clues they provide increase students’
motivation, curiosity and efficiency during their self-study processes. Although some
modules have a discrete type of configuration, most of them have a linear structure. The
curriculum adapts to a spiral configuration in which sophistication and abstraction
Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, Faculty of Medicine, Information Package 2003-2004
12
degrees of the concepts gradually increases as one repeatedly learns them at different
levels of the curriculum.
The educational approach at DEUFM is usually referred to as student-centred
and problem-based that is characterized by emphasis on the students’ self-motivation
and responsibility for learning. This approach encourages the students to learn how to
deal with problems they will face later in their professional career. The clinical skills
training is considered to be the most important component of the curriculum since it aims
to raise students’ awareness of their behaviours and to subject them to critical
assessment. The practice of critical skills is expected to be closely related to the
scenario of the PBL module being implemented. During the first three years of the
curriculum, various departments organise practicals where the students learn by doing
and gain practical experience by working on simulated or real materials. These are
mainly multi-disciplinary practicals. The ethical concepts are integrated into the cases of
the modules and discussed during the sessions. The elective topics offered in the
curriculum give the students the opportunity to freely select a topic for an in-depth study.
During the preclinical years, students have several opportunities to practice in primary
health care facilities. Problem-based learning method is particularly used in preclinical
years. Following the first three preclinical years medical education, during the fourth and
fifth years, the students have a fair chance of developing their knowledge and skills in
the clinical settings. Task-based Learning has been adopted as the educational strategy
for clerkship in 2000. During the sixth year, students work as interns in the wards. The
internship includes hands-on-patient practice and an active role in patient management.
ASSESSMENT PROCESSES
Several methods are being used for continuous evaluation of the curriculum. The
tutors and trainers evaluate students in PBL sessions, field studies, communication
skills, clinical skills practicals and clinical settings based on their performance. The
scores of module-end, semester-end and phase-end exams are part of the
comprehensive assessment of both the students and the curriculum.
Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, Faculty of Medicine, Information Package 2003-2004
13
The feedback of students on the educational activities and their tutors and
trainers are received regularly. The students evaluate their tutors and trainers by means
of written forms, at the end of each tutoring and practical period. The Medical Education
Department conducts a survey study to determine the students’ contentment levels on
educational activities, tutors and facilities of DEUFM at the end of each year. The
general objective of this study is to gather information from the students for monitoring
and improving the program.
QUALIFICATION AND FURTHER STUDIES
DEUFM recruits 120 new students every year. The medical education leading to
MD degree lasts six years in Turkey. The approval of the MD degree by the Ministry of
Health is required in order to practice medicine in Turkey. Access to post-graduate
studies depends upon the rules of the institution offering these studies. In Turkey, the
prerequisites for starting specialisation are taking a central examination and being
appointed to the health institution offering the training.
DEUFM offers a set of specialty
trainings in its departments.

DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHIATRY
Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine Department of Psychiatry is a clinical
care and research oriented clinic. The Department consists of nine faculty members
(four full professors, two associate professors, and three assistant professors), two
instructors, and 12 residents.
The clinic is composed of an inpatient and an outpatient unit. The inpatient unit
with 20 beds and has a patient turnover rate of 180-200 per year. The inpatient unit also
provides daily care for an additional five patients whenever needed. It serves as a halfopen psychiatry clinic where, under the supervision of nurses, interns, and their
relatives; patients are allowed to leave the clinic during the day hours. However, in case
of need, the outdoors/indoors can be temporarily locked. In the inpatient unit, the staff
members and the patients organise their own entertainment meetings one day each
week. There is also a lounge where the patients watch TV, play games, drink their
beverages and attend good morning meetings aimed to increase the interaction among
them. There is also an activity room where the patients can paint, knit or perform other
kinds of handwork activities under the supervision of an expert.
The mean duration of hospitalisation in the inpatient unit of the department of
psychiatry is around 3-5 weeks This reflects a diagnosis and acute treatment-oriented
approach of the caregivers. In the inpatient unit there is an electroconvulsive treatment
(ECT) application room. The ECT device being used is a MECTA system. However, the
Thymotron IV system will soon be available for use. The number of patients receiving
ECT treatment per year is around 30 and the average of ECT courses per patient is
between 8 – 14. Bilateral application of ECT is carried out under anaesthesia.
The outpatient unit offers special services for bipolar disorder, schizophrenia,
alcohol/substance abuse and a consultation liaison program.
Besides the clinical services provided on inpatient and outpatient bases, two
inpatient clinical trials on bipolar disorder and unipolar depression supported by the
Stanley Medical Research Institute and the Pfizer Pharmaceuticals USA respectively,
are also in progress. Two independent projects carried out in cooperation with Harvard

Medical Faculty are currently underway. One outpatient study on schizophrenia
supported by the Stanley Medical Research Institute has recently been completed.
Another epidemiological study on alcohol abuse is supported by the European Union.
There are several other currently conducted clinical and preclinical studies supported by
local sources. During the recent years, the Dokuz Eylul University Department of
Psychiatry has made considerable contributions to the scientific literature with its articles
published in local and international peer reviewed journals.
In harmony with the general educational policy of the Dokuz Eylul University,
phase-V medical students are being trained according to the principles of active
education on a tutorship-based approach in groups of 5-7 students. Besides phase-V
medical students, as part of their routine clinical rotation program requiring at least four
weeks of patient care in psychiatry services, interns temporarily join the team.
The faculty members apply a regular training program for residents. The
Department also holds regular meetings for brainstorming, reading recently published
articles and seminars on several important issues.

Outpatient Treatment Unit
In our treatment units, everyday approximately 125 patients are treated including
the various treatment methods such as electrotherapy, mechanotherapy, actinotherapy,
hydrotherapy, kinesiotherapy, thermotherapy, whirlpools, massage, EMG-biofeedback
and also isokinetic treatment.
Orthopedic Rehabilitation Outpatient Clinic
Every patient with orthopaedic problems (fracture, subluxation, spinal cord injury,
soft tissue injuries, peripheral nerve injuries, hand injuries, prosthesis, congenital
anomalies) are examined and given appropriate treatment protocols. These patients are
followed with regular controls.
Osteoporosis Outpatient Clinic
Osteoporosis is characterised by low bone mineral density, changes in
microstructure of bone matrix and increased fracture risk. It is most frequently seen in
postmenopausal women and the elderly. It causes pain, restriction of motion and
fractures; and all these make living difficult for the patients.
Patients diagnosed as osteoporosis are given medical and exercise therapy and
followed up regularly in our osteoporosis outpatient clinic every Thursday and Friday
afternoons. And also free booklets including information about disease and exercise are
given.
Rheumatology Outpatient Clinic
Patients with inflammatory joint diseases, especially rheumatoid arthritis and
ankylosing spondilitis are followed on Wednesday afternoons. Free booklets including
information about diseases and exercises are given. And also group exercises for
patients with ankylosing spondilitis are arranged.

Isokinetic dynamometer has an important role in the objective assessment of
muscle performance, arrangement of appropriate rehabilitation programs and observing
the efficacy of therapy in musculoskelatal disorders and sport injuries. Since 1999 the
isokinetic test and treatment device is actively used in our clinic. Sportsmen in some
sport clubs are assessed before the beginning of the season.
Low Back School
60-80% of people have low back pain at least once in their lifetime. The aim of
low back pain treatment is to relieve the pain and to prevent the recurrences. Most
patients have recurrences because they don’t have low back education. This education
is given in low back schools.
In the department, Low Back School education program began in 1998. Patients
with low back pain are examined and assessed in the outpatient clinic, and they are
included to the low back school program. This program includes 6-8 patients each time.
The low-back school education is four hours totally and takes 2 weeks; two days
every week and one hour each day. The patients are followed up periodically after the
program. The structure and function of the vertebral column, daily activities, exercise
program are shown in the school in addition to the general information about low-back
pain. A booklet containing all these information is given to the patient at the end of the
education program.
Pediatric Rehabilitation
After the physical examination of the paediatric patient having rheumatic or
neurological problem (cerebral palsy, spina bifida, Guillan Barré Syndrome, muscle
diseases, etc) the suitable rehabilitation program is designed.
Outpatient Clinic
The appointments of the outpatient clinic are given on Monday mornings every
week. If physical treatment is needed, patient is taken in the program at the physical
treatment unit.

Despite vigorous efforts in oncology research have been going on perpetually
during the recent years, radiation therapy remains one of the major treatment modalities
of cancer treatment. The International statistics reveal that about
65 % of cancer
patients still receive radiation therapy alone or at certain phase during the treatment of
their disease,
in combination with other treatment modalities. On the other hand
precision and quality are the main goals in radiation treatment planning. A developed
department should ideally be equipped to deliver treatment with both precision and to a
high quality.
It had been recognised in Turkey for several years that there was a need for an
advanced, organised radiation oncology department with modern equipment and
specialized staff. Though a hard work and persistence, financial support was obtained
and over a 9-month period, the most modern radiation oncology centre in Turkey was
erected. Beside this, an MRI, two CT scanners and two SPECT cameras as well as
other modern imaging equipment was installed in the medical faculty during 1990-1991.
Dokuz Eylul Medical Faculty Department of Radiation Oncology is situated on an
800 sq metres sight located in the campus of the University hospital. The planning and
design of the building benefited from the experience of other international institutions.

own educational structure, research methods and medical approaches based on primary
care and identified basic principles.
The Department is the academic unit of this discipline and was established in
1993 in Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine.
One assistant professor, five
lecturers, one general practitioner and an assistant work at the Department. Besides
pre and postgraduate education, the same staff also conducts the studies in the field of
primary care.
Problem-based Learning is the main part of the curriculum and the Department
plays an active role in pre-graduate education. All the staff of the Department is working
in Clinical Skills Program, which needs a multidisciplinary approach, and they also
working intensively as tutors in cases of problem-based learning. Our post-graduate
education activities are the assistant education programmes and the education
programmes for the general practitioners. The specialisation programme commenced
with the first assistant who started to work in our Department in 2003. The Department
is also working on an education programme named as ‘Transitional Period Education’.
The aim of the programme is to provide a standard education and give a new status as
Family Physician/General Practitioner to the general practitioners who have not received
a specialisation programme after their graduation. The activities in continuing medicine
education are carried out by the courses prepared by our Department. Different
institutions like Izmir Provincial Health Directorate, other universities, state hospitals,
Turkish Chamber of Medicine, are the co-workers of this programme. The goal of these
courses is to create applicable diagnostic and therapeutic standards and protocols for
primary care.
The Department of Family Medicine has also started to give primary care
services at the Medico-Social Department of the University in 2003.

DEPARTMENT OF OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY
The Department of Otorhinolaryngology / Head and Neck Surgery at Dokuz Eylul
University, Faculty of Medicine was established in 1980. The mission of the Department
is to provide excellent education to medical students and residents; to practice
contemporary, high quality patient care; and to create new or expanded knowledge
from basic and clinical otolaryngology research.
Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine has recently introduced a new
undergraduate curriculum. Basic otorhinolaryngology disease processes and principles
are conveyed by Problem-based Learning and Task-based learning in the first four
years of medical education. Clinical skills are incorporated in a two weeks period in the
fifth year. The objectives of the programme are to demonstrate the ability to take and
record a complete otorhinolaryngological history and examination; to be able to arrive at
a tentative clinical diagnosis; differentiate between life-threatening serious and minor
conditions; and to be conversant with the various modalities of treatment used in
otolaryngology.
The residency program is five years in duration with two residents per year. The
Otolaryngology training programme is a broad-based programme devoted to the training
of well skilled otorhinolaryngologists. As such, it provides extensive experience in
general otolaryngology, otology/neurotology, rhinology, head and neck surgery
(including oncology and rehabilitation), pediatric otolrhinolaryngology, and plastic and
reconstructive surgery of the head and neck. As the trainee progresses, he or she
gradually assumes greater responsibility in all aspects of patient care, and performs
increasingly complex surgical procedures. All of this occurs in an atmosphere intended
to encourage intellectual stimulation and academic growth.
Since 1980, 30 residents have completed the programme and have gone on to
practice in Turkey in private or academic practice.
Opportunities for research within the Department are numerous. Hearing and
Balance Disorders, Head and Neck Oncology, Snoring and Sleep Apnea, Laryngology
and Voice Disorders are research areas that have recently been identified as focus
Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, Faculty of Medicine, Information Package 2003-2004
79
areas. Residents are expected to complete at least one project during their residency
and dedicated research time is provided within the resident's schedule to facilitate this
requirement.
On a yearly basis, there are over 10.000 scheduled outpatient visits to the
Department and another 1.000 emergency visits. Clinical service is provided in
seven divisions: general otorhinolaryngology, otology/neurotology, head and neck
surgical oncology, laryngology and voice disorders, rhinology and hearing
disorders and audiology.
There are over 1500 surgical procedures performed by the members of
the Department of Otolaryngology on an annual basis in two well-equipped
operating rooms. Inpatient care is provided on a dedicated floor. Ambulatory
surgery is provided both in the main operating rooms and as well as in a minor
procedure area.
At the present time there are 9 otorhinolaryngologists 6 of whom are fulltime on the staff. The Audiology Unit provides behavioural audiometry, auditory
evoked response testing, electroneuronography, facial nerve monitoring, cochlear
implants, and hearing aids. A full range of vestibular testing is provided in the
Vestibular Laboratory, and our Voice and Speech Laboratory provides a full range
of both diagnostic and therapeutic services.

DEPARTMENT OF PEDIATRIC SURGERY
Dokuz Eylul University, Department of Paediatric Surgery, has been serving in
fields of treatment, research and education with universal standards for 15 years. Our
small family consists of 9 people, 4 faculty members and 5 residents.
In the Department, treatments of respiratory, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary,
endocrine, genital and urinary systems’ congenital and acquired surgical problems of all
paediatric age (from neonatal period till the end of adolescence) are performed. The
operations of inguinal hernia, hydrocel, undescended testis and hypospadias are
performed out patiently without hospitalisation.
Our Department is one of the institutions, which have accepted the notion of
minimal invasive surgery. Therefore in our Department, patients with congenital
aganglionic megacolon (Hirchsprung’s Disease) are treated with transanal approach
without an abdominal incision and colostomy. These patients are discharged from the
hospital on the second postoperative day after oral feedings have been started.
All endoscopic procedures in paediatric surgery are performed in our Department.
Babies with anal atresia are treated with laparoscopy assisted anorectal pull-through.
This new technique enables the rectum to be placed in its anatomically normal site,
through the sphincteric muscles. For the treatment of pectus excavatum (funnel chest),
where the posterior sternum and the anterior chest wall is congenitally depressed, in
place of classic treatment, a supportive bar is placed between the sternum and the heart
with thoracospy. With this new minimal invasive technique, the deformity is repaired
without any need of blood transfusion, cartilage excision and a wide incision. We are
proud to be the first clinic in Turkey to perform the minimal invasive pectus excavatum
repair, transanal endorectal pull-through and laparoscopy assisted anorectal pullthrough operations.
For surgical treatment of extrahepatic portal hypertension, in place of portosystemic shunts a new technique, mesenterico-left portal bypass is being preferred and
our department is again the first clinic in Turkey, which performs this new technique.

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Accommodation
The students should contact the International Office of the University for
accommodation requests. The
arrival
time
should be ascertained before any
arrangement for accommodation can be made. Although there are no student
dormitories on the university campus, there are some flats or rooms for rent near the
Faculty of Medicine and the University Hospital. The price of flats or rooms range
between 200-400 Euros per person, per month.
Meals
There is a student refectory on the Faculty of Medicine campus and another
refectory for staff and interns in the University Hospital where lunch and dinner are
served. Besides, there is a restaurant and five cafeterias at different locations of the
campus. The costs of breakfast, lunch, and dinner are generally reasonable. There are
three big shopping centres with boutiques, food courts and cinemas and gross markets
within walking distance of the campus.
The Vicinity of Dokuz Eylül
Medical Campus
Tradition states that İzmir was named after an Amazon queen, Smyrna. Though
the earliest settlement in Ancient Smyrna dates back to the 3 rd millennium B.C., the
present city was founded at the time of Alexander the Great. Located at the western end
of the Silk Road, İzmir prospered as a merchants’ harbour till the maritime discoveries of
the 15th century. From then onwards, İzmir continued to exist as the main port of
exportation of its large Anatolian hinterland. The 20th century witnessed the development
of its industrial identity. The city’s first university, Ege University was founded in 1955,
followed by Dokuz Eylul University in 1982. İzmir International Festival in June-July and
Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, Faculty of Medicine, Information Package 2003-2004

İzmir International Fair in August are the leading events of the city’s social and cultural
life.
Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine’s campus, 10 kilometres from the city
centre, is located in Inciraltı, a fast developing semi-rural district, on the itinerary of the
Izmir-Çeşme highway connecting the city to the towns of Urla peninsula, westernmost
extension of the Asian part of Turkey. Within walking distance of the campus, is the site
of the thermal spring known as the “Baths of Agamemnon” which, according to a legend,
hosted Agamemnon’s wounded soldiers after the Trojan War. This thermal resort offers
facilities like swimming pools, tennis courts, a hiking path and restaurants. Nearby
shopping malls, house supermarkets, boutiques, hobby shops, food courts and movie
theatres. Neighbouring nurseries display diverse specimens of the fertile Aegean flora.
In the shady teagardens of Inciraltı fishermen’s wharf, one can enjoy refreshing sea
breezes.
From a historical perspective, ruins of the ancient cities of Clazomenai, Teos and
Eryhtrae are all within an hour drive from the campus. The Urla peninsula hosts several
coastal towns like Seferihisar, Urla and Çeşme with pleasant beaches for swimming.
Cesme is also famous for its thermal baths with curative properties. The ever-windy gulf
of Alaçatı, a picturesque town with old stone houses, attracts windsurfing fans from all
over Europe.
Kipa:
Kipa is a macro size supermarket, located at 10 minutes walk from the Faculty
of Medicine campus. Kipa supermarket offers various goods such as house wares,
clothes, variety of food. There are also a variety of shops and cafés and a bank at the
shopping centre.
.Agora: Agora is a shopping mall located on the road connecting the campus to the
city centre, Konak square. It can be reached on foot (20 minutes) or with public
transportation vehicles. Agora is a two floored shopping mall containing a variety of
shops, cafés, a food court and 8 small movie theatres. Agora is another alternative for
eating, shopping and enjoying yourselves in Izmir.

Özdilek: Ozdilek shopping centre is part of a building complex housing both the Crown
Plaza Hotel and the Ozdilek centre itself. It is located in Inciraltı by the sea shore and a 2
km long pleasant road lined with eucalyptus trees connects it to the campus of the
Faculty of Medicine. The supermarket of the shopping centre covers two floors. There
are also several fancy boutiques offering some well-known trademarks.
Hotel Izmir Princess:
Hotel İzmir Princess is a five star hotel located near the
source of the thermal baths known as the Baths of Agamemnon. The hotel is
inaugurated in 1995 and it is 8 kms from the city centre (Konak square), 10 kms from the
airport (Adnan Menderes Airport). The hotel’s garden is surrounded with a natural pine
forest, a peaceful atmosphere away from the noise of the city.
Balçova Thermal Centre:
Balçova Thermal Hotel and its Physical Therapy and
Rehabilitation Centre is one of Turkey’s most important thermal hotels with a treatment
centre. With its 70 people staff, its original architecture, natural surroundings provide a
high quality health care at international standards. It is a centre of attraction for many
foreign visitors with several physical disorders. These facilities are located at
approximately 8 kms from the city centre.
Since the time of King Agamemnon, the curative thermal spring of Balçova is
believed to heal several diseases like rheumatic diseases, neck and low back pain,
neurological disturbances and chronic infections. The thermal water contains potassium,
calcium, sulphur, magnesium, iron, sulphate, bicarbonate, chlorine and sodium. Its
temperature is 63 C. It is also used for cosmetic purposes.

Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi, Faculty of Medicine, Information Package 2003-2004
119
With its large spectrum of latest education technologies, LRC provides
substantial support to the self-study process of the students which is of vital importance
for the proper implementation of Problem-based learning (PBL). The aims of LRC are to
support students to use modern learning technologies and to develop the skill to reach
and select learning resources.
LRC runs on an appointment basis. The students contact LRC secretary to
arrange their appointments, either by calling 2235-2236 or applying directly to the LRC
secretary. LRC serves both the academic and student community of the Dokuz Eylul
University Faculty of Medicine.
Synchronous with the PBL module being discussed and related to the learning
issues of the present PBL scenario, temporary displays of presentation materials, wall
charts, models, mannequins, VCDs, video-cassettes, histology and pathology slides are
prepared to increase the students’ accessibility to the proper learning resources.
International programmes
At the Faculty of Medicine the language of instruction is Turkish. Incoming
English speaking students are offered individually tailored clinical clerkship/internship
blocks. The incoming student is assigned to an English-speaking supervisor at the clinic.
An important majority of hospital staff members speak English. The students who cannot
speak Turkish may some have limitations during their student-patient communications.
Turkish speaking foreign students may participate in any programme in all years of
medical education. However, they should call their contact person (ECTS coordinator) to
make necessary arrangements in advance. Starting from the 2004-2005 academic year,
course blocks in English will be available for international students.
