Dartmouth’s Thayer School Exchange Program with Duke University
Students enrolled in the Master of Engineering Management Program at Thayer School may
spend one fall term at Duke University taking courses in its Master of Engineering Management
Program on an exchange basis. The Duke M.E.M. courses will count toward completion of the
Thayer M.E.M. degree and will not be counted toward any degree from Duke University.
Students should contact the Thayer M.E.M. Director if they are considering a term at Duke in
this exchange program.
To participate in this exchange program at Duke, students must submit a Duke MEM Exchange
Student Information Form to the Master of Engineering Management Admissions Office at 3120
Fitzpatrick Center, Box 90271, Durham, NC, 27708-0271 by August 1st. The Duke M.E.M.
Director will review the form, and the Admissions Coordinator will submit the necessary
information to the University Registrar to obtain a PIN for the exchange student and ensure the
exchange student has access to Duke resources such as Sakai.
Full tuition must be paid to Duke, with course tuition paid on a per credit basis. Domestic
students are required to obtain some form of medical insurance coverage, but are not required to
enroll in the Duke Student Medical Insurance Plan [“the Duke Plan”]. International students are
required to enroll in the Duke Plan unless enrolled in a plan through Dartmouth that provides
adequate coverage to the student while attending classes at Duke. In order to waive the
requirement for the Duke coverage, the student must provide proof of adequate coverage to the
Duke MEM office. The plan is administered by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina
(BCBSNC) and Koster Insurance. A schedule of benefits is available at
http://www.studentaffairs.duke.edu/studenthealth. Students must enter insurance decisions in
ACES during the open enrollment period, which will be posted on the Bursar web site. If
students do not enter a health insurance decision on ACES before the open enrollment period
ends, a decision will be made for the student and they will be automatically enrolled in the Duke
Student Medical Insurance Plan.

International students will remain on Dartmouth’s visa sponsorship with Dartmouth’s permission
to enroll at Duke for one semester. International students will submit visa information to Duke
via webforms and will need to register with Duke’s International Office upon arrival at Duke’s
campus, but Duke will not issue the visa documents. Students will receive information and
instructions for the webform submission after completing the necessary administrative
procedures for the exchange program outlined in this document.

Questions within that same section. Students will be given access to the Duke Blackboard
system after completing the necessary administrative procedures for the exchange program
outlined here.
It is the student’s responsibility to make sure that their course schedule is acceptable to the
Thayer School Master of Engineering Management Program. Students should read and utilize
the Course Registration Guide and other course-related documents available in the Academic
Info section of the MEM Blackboard site when making course selections. Students may enroll in

Four core or technical elective courses available to Duke University’s Master of
Engineering Management Program. Please note that core courses are not required.

Seminar and Workshop Series: The Seminar Series is designed to expose students to
different aspects of business and to expose them to a variety of business people. MEM
Workshops teach a concept or skill that is not directly covered in class, including topics
such as ethics, negotiations, sales, interacting with the media and networking. Workshops
are more structured than MEM seminars and generally last 2 to 4 hours. Information
