This document contains information about ongoing / forthcoming recruitment exercises
for magistrates in England and Wales.
Please note:

Magistrates are recruited by local advisory committees. Recruitment is based on
the needs of the courts in each area. The need to recruit new magistrates is
generally reviewed on an annual basis.

Applicants are expected to be living or working in, or reasonably close to, the
area in which they wish to serve.

If you are interested in becoming a magistrate, you can use this document to find
out if recruitment is taking place in your local area.

Advisory committees may close recruitment campaigns early if they receive a
sufficient number of applications prior to the closing date. Contact the relevant
committee if you have a query about their recruitment campaign.

Please do not submit an application if your local advisory committee is not
currently recruiting.


Magistrates appointed to the Leicestershire and Rutland Bench will sit at Leicester,
Hinckley and Loughborough Magistrates’ Courts (although the Lord Chancellor is
currently consulting on whether the Hinckley Court should close). The Lord Chancellor’s
expectation is that magistrates will aim to serve for a minimum of five years and be in a
position to offer that commitment. Magistrates are expected to sit a minimum of 13 full
days per year and to sit regularly throughout the year. The average sitting for the Bench
is 15 days per year.
Appointment
The selection process involves two interviews which are scheduled to take place during
October and November. Appointments are made by the Senior Presiding Judge.
Appointed magistrates will be trained in the Autumn of 2016 and will commence sitting in
January 2017.
Training
Training involves;
 Private study
 3.5 days face-to-face training (between September and November 2016)
 3 half day court observations with a mentor (between October and November
2016)
 A prison and YOI visit
 A Probation visit

Mentor
You will be allocated a magistrate mentor during the first 12 months of appointment. The
appointed mentor will meet with you to provide support and guidance, and will attend
your mentored sittings. Your first of six mentored sittings will take place in January 2017.
Ongoing learning and training
In the year following appointment there are a further 2 days of compulsory
consolidation training. This is followed by an in-court appraisal to determine
competence.
Following this initial training period, magistrates will be required to take part in
development and learning throughout their careers. As a minimum, magistrates are
expected to undertake at least six hours of training every three years and any other
training prescribed from time to time by the Lord Chief Justice. However, most
magistrates will undertake training beyond the minimum. Magistrates are appraised
every three years to ensure their competence to continue sitting.

Staffordshire Justice Centre, Newcastle-under-Lyme). The closing date for applications

Candidates invited for interview will be expected to demonstrate a good knowledge and
understanding of social issues in the local area in which they wish to serve, in particular
the causes and effects of crime. This would typically be gained by living or working within
North Staffordshire.
Magistrates will be selected and appointed solely on merit and applications are welcome
from any person who meets the eligibility criteria for appointment and who believes they
have the necessary qualities. However applications are particularly welcome from
members of Black and Minority Ethnic communities, people under the age of 50, people
in paid employment, and people with a disability who are able, either unassisted or with
the benefit of reasonable adjustments, to carry out the full range of a magistrates’ duties.
First stage interviews will be held between 1st April and 31st May 2016. Where relevant,
second stage interviews will be held between 1st June and 31st July 2016. When
