These scholarships offer students from around Australia the opportunity to undertake a
research project at the Australian National University in Canberra.
Who can apply?
These scholarships are:

Available for any relevant undergraduate course

Must be undertaken at the ANU but are available to students enrolled in any

You must be in at least the second year of a bachelors degree course (including

Each year the Cancer Council of Australia hosts an essay competition for medical students
with the winner being awarded a trip to Europe to attend the International Summer School
for Medical Students.

Research Scholarships
Each year the Cancer Council of Western Australia offers scholarships for students to
undertake research projects broadly related to cancer during the summer holidays.
Scholarships are awarded for a period of 4 to 10 weeks. Multiple scholarships are offered

These scholarships provide an opportunity for final year undergraduate science or medical

Human Genetics Society Vacation Scholarships
These scholarships offer an opportunity for students to undertake a research project in
human genetics over the summer holidays under the supervision of a member of the Human
Genetics Society of Australasia (HGSA) in Perth.
Who can apply?
These scholarships are:

This scholarship must be undertaken in Perth

Indigenous Medical Student Placement Program (DoHA and AIDA)
This program is a partnership between the Commonwealth Department of Health and
Ageing (DoHA) together with the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA).
It offers an opportunity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander medical students from
anywhere in Australia to undertake a placement in health policy in Canberra with the Office
of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (OATSIH) within DoHA. Up to two placements

may be offered each year.
Who can apply?
This program is:

Only available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people

Only available to medical students

This scholarship is open to Indigenous medical students from anywhere in Australia,
but must be undertaken in Canberra
Additional criteria:

This program is usually undertaken during your end of year break, but may be
undertaken by a student during a mid-year break

Placements of up to eight weeks are offered but the length of each placement will
be based on the individual circumstances of each student

This program will also offer you the opportunity of spending time in other areas of
the Department and to undertake clinical placements at the Aboriginal Medical
Service in Canberra
How much is it worth?

You’ll get paid at the Australian Public Service Level 3-6 rate depending on your level
of experience and duration of your placement (up to eight weeks)

You’ll receive one week of paid holidays between Christmas and New Year

Travel to and from Canberra and your accommodation in Canberra during your
placement will also be covered

John Flynn Placement Program
This program offers medical students from across Australia the opportunity to undertake
paid work experience with a doctor in a rural or remote community for two weeks a year
during university holidays, usually for a period of four years. Up to 300 new students are
accepted each year.
Who can apply?
This program is:

Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people

Only available to medical students

Available Australia-wide
Additional criteria:

You must be in your first or second year of a graduate entry course, or in your first,
second or third year of an undergraduate medical course

You must be willing to develop an ongoing relationship with your mentor doctor and
get involved in all aspects of community life throughout the period of your
scholarship

You aren’t able to choose where you will be placed although you have a chance to
nominate a preferred State/Territory and your medical interests so that an
appropriate match can be made
How much is it worth?

An allowance of $500 per week whilst you are undertaking your placements. The
total value of your allowance will be $4,000 ($500 per week for two weeks a year
over four years)

Travel to and from your community and basic accommodation expenses during your
placement periods will also be covered
Selection criteria:

Willingness to participate in and learn about rural and remote communities and
medical practices

Willingness to undertake cultural awareness training if necessary

Ability to be open minded, adaptable and pro-active

Each university is allocated a quota of places based on the number of enrolled

institutes across Australia that have a presence in MS research.

University of Sydney Summer Research Scholarships
These scholarships provide undergraduate students (including medical students) at the
University of Sydney with the opportunity to obtain experience in medical-related research
over the summer holidays. Approximately 60 scholarships are awarded each year of which
roughly 20 are reserved for previous scholarship holders.
Who can apply?

These scholarships are:

Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people

Only available to undergraduate science students (including physical and natural
sciences, and pharmacy) and medical students

Only available to students enrolled at the University of Sydney
Additional criteria:

You must be studying university full-time

You must not have already completed a Masters degree or PhD

Students who have received this scholarship on a previous occasion are encouraged
to re-apply

You will need to apply specifically for available projects. You can nominate up to two
preferences on your application form. Each project may have its own specific
eligibility and selection criteria

All Summer Research Projects are supervised and are available for a period of up to
eight weeks
How much is it worth?

An allowance of $225 per week for eight weeks (paid in two instalments)

As a condition of this scholarships you‘ll be required to submit a report and make a
presentation of your findings to an audience at the end of the project

Academic merit

Your suitability for the project

Any relevant work experience

A report from a referee

A letter of up to one page outlining your reasons for applying for a Summer Research
Scholarship

Applications will be assessed by the project supervisor

University of Waikato: Summer Research Scholarships
These scholarships enable students from any university in Australia or New Zealand to
pursue their research interests under the supervision of an academic staff member from the
University of Waikato. Projects are available in a wide range of fields including medicine and
medical sciences.
Who can apply?
These scholarships are:

Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people

Available for any relevant undergraduate, honours or first year Masters course
(including medicine)

Available to students of all Australian and New Zealand universities
Additional criteria:
Research projects are available in the following fields:

Arts and Language Education, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Computer Science,
Engineering, General and Applied Linguistics, Geography, History, Humanities, Law,
Finance, Music, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Psychology, Screen and Media
Studies, Societies and Cultures, Strategy and HR Management

Each project may have its own specific eligibility and selection criteria

UWA Medicine and Dentistry Summer Vacation Scholarship
This scholarship provides an opportunity for medical, dental, health science and podiatry
students at the University of Western Australia to gain supervised research experience in an
area of medical science during their summer holidays.
Who can apply?
This scholarship is:

Available to Indigenous and non-Indigenous people

Only available to students of medicine, dentistry, health sciences and podiatry

Only available to students of the University of Western Australia
Additional criteria:

You can apply at any stage of your course

Preference will be given to students wishing to enter an honours level course in the
Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences
How much is it worth?
A total of $2,000 over a six week period
Selection criteria:

The merit of the proposed research project

Support of your supervisor
