General Information
1.
What is the Greenbrier Valley Scholarship Program?
The Greenbrier Valley Scholarship Program is a collaborative effort of area clubs, groups, organizations and schools to enable
students to more easily apply for scholarships in our area.
2.
Am I eligible to apply?
Each scholarship has specific eligibility criteria. Read through the list of scholarships offered to see if you are eligible. Failure to
submit the correct information may result in your application being disqualified.
3.
What is the deadline to apply?
Applications must be received in the Greenbrier East counseling office by 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2009.
4.
When will I find out if I have been awarded a scholarship?
Applicants will be notified around the end of May. Scholarships will be announced and awarded on an annual basis.
5.
Are these scholarships taxable?
Monies received for tuition, fees and books may not incur tax liability while monies applied to room and board may be considered
taxable income. These awards are to be applied to direct college expenses at the institution, such as tuition, fees and books. The
recipient is responsible for any tax liability incurred as a result of this award. The student is fully responsible for all tax reports.
The Greenbrier Valley Scholarship Program does not provide tax information to the student or the Internal Revenue Service.
6.
If I am awarded a scholarship, how much will I receive?
The scholarship amount awarded is listed under the list of descriptions. Amounts will vary.
7.
Where can I go to school with these scholarships?
Any special criteria will be noted in the description of each scholarship.
8.
If I withdraw from school, what do I do about the scholarship?
A student who withdraws from school for any reason will be expected to notify the Scholarship Committee of his or her status
and refund the unused portion of the scholarship.
9.
Does the Greenbrier Valley Scholarship Program make the decisions about who is awarded a scholarship?
Each scholarship has its own selection committee. The Greenbrier Valley Scholarship Program processes the application
materials for the committees that choose the recipients of the awards.
10. If I am awarded a scholarship, do I receive a check?
Yes. The Scholarship Committee will issue a check jointly to the recipient and the college, but it will be mailed to the recipient.
You will be required to provide your full Social Security Number to the club/group.

11. If I receive a scholarship for one year, will I automatically receive that award for the following year?
No. Some of the scholarships are a one-year award. If you are eligible for a renewal, you must apply again. Check the
description for each specific scholarship.

Deadline: Applications must be received in the Greenbrier East counseling office by 3:30 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2009. The
applicant assumes all responsibility for duplicating copies of materials required—ONE COPY FOR EACH SCHOLARSHIP
COMMITTEE. The following information should be included in order to be considered a complete application packet:

Cover Page: Must include your name, school, ID number and a senior picture.

Unofficial Transcript: See your school counselor for a copy of your transcript. There may be a fee for this request and you may
need to do this in writing.
Copies of Test Scores: See your school counselor for a copy of your scores if you do not have copies.
Extra-curricular Activity Sheet: A complete chronological list of all school and community activities, clubs, leadership positions,
work and volunteer experience in grades 9 –12.
Essay: Take time to prepare a developed, well-written, grammatically correct essay. This is your opportunity for the Scholarship
Committee to know you individually. While GPA, ACT/SAT scores, financial need, etc. are important selection criteria, a good essay
often sets one student apart from others. The essay is to be limited to one page length. You may want to write about an interest you
have, a challenge you’ve met (or not) or something you are passionate about. There is no “correct” way to respond to this essay. In
writing about something that matters to you, you will convey a sense of self. The essay must be computer prepared or hand printed.
Check each scholarship criteria to see if you are required to write an essay on a particular topic.
Letters of Recommendation: Two letters should be from school personnel and one letter should be from a community leader or your
employer.

Scholarships Requiring the Community Scholarship Packet
Application – Scholarship Descriptions
BOLLING HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI
AUGUSTUS TAYLOR SCHOLARSHIP
A one time $500.00 scholarship that is usually given to an African-American student.
Eligibility:
 Plans to attend an accredited college or place of training
 Has at least a 3.0 grade point average
 Participates in school, church and community activities
 Interview may be requested
DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY OF WOMEN EDUCATORS GRANT-IN-AID
Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of women educators, offers a $500.00 grant-in-aid to a high school senior
whose goal is to enter college in the field of education. In even numbered years the
grant is offered to a student from Greenbrier West; in odd numbered years the grant goes to a student at Greenbrier East.
The $500 check will be awarded upon notification of acceptance at a college.
Eligibility:
 Applicant is a senior in good standing at Greenbrier East or Greenbrier West High Schools
 Overall GPA of 2.5
 Must attend an accredited institution of higher learning in the state of West Virginia
 Must major in education with the intent of becoming a teacher
FRANKFORD RURITAN SCHOLARSHIP
Frankford Ruritan awards scholarships of small varying amounts (from $100.00 to $1,000.00) depending on funds
available and number of awards given. Also, Ruritan National (Double Your Dollar) awards a $600 scholarship that is
doubled by certain in state schools for a total of $1,200.00.
Eligibility:
Scholarship awarded to high school seniors from the Frankford School attendance area that are continuing their education
at a college or technical school. Preference will be given to students who attended Frankford Elementary School.
Additional Requirements:
 Letter of recommendation from a member of Frankford Ruritan Club.
THE REVEREND PHILIP GRABER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Reverend Doctor Philip Graber was the beloved pastor of Ronceverte Presbyterian Church when he had an untimely
death due to cancer. His two sons, Benjamin and Jameson, both graduated from Greenbrier East High School as National
Merit Scholars. Dr. Graber and his family hold post-secondary education in the highest regard. As a result of Dr.
Graber’s emphasis on education and for his emphasis of promoting Christian service and selflessness, members of
Ronceverte Presbyterian Church have established a financial scholarship award to be given to a deserving Greenbrier East
graduating senior in memory of Dr. Graber.
Eligibility:
 Graduating senior of Greenbrier East High School accepted at an accredited college or university.
Additional Requirements:
 One of the required letters of recommendation should be from a pastor, priest or church affiliated person.

Applicant may include a list of her/his activities, interests, accomplishments, or awards with the scholarship
application.
Applicant may be asked to appear before the selection committee for an interview.
GREENBRIER COUNTY EDUCATION ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Greenbrier County Education Association will award two $750 scholarships to students accepted at a post-secondary
institution.
Eligibility:
 The applicant must be a graduating senior of GEHS or GWHS.
 One parent must be a member of Greenbrier County GCEA.
 It is the student’s responsibility to provide proof of enrollment in a post-secondary institution.
Additional Requirements:
Applicant’s one-page essay must includes evidence of financial need, general information about the student and
educational aspirations
GREENBRIER COUNTY FARM BUREAU SCHOLARSHIP
The Greenbrier County Farm Bureau advocating on behalf of the farmers of Greenbrier County offers a $1000 scholarship
to one Greenbrier East graduating senior and one Greenbrier West graduating senior. The scholarship will be dispersed in
two cash awards. The first ($500) will be at the beginning of first semester and the second ($500) will be at the beginning
of the second semester.
Eligibility:
 Must exhibit a financial need.
 Must attend an accredited college/university/vocational school
 Must major in agriculture or forestry
 Must have a letter of recommendation from a Greenbrier county agricultural leader.
GREENBRIER COUNTY SCHOOLS FOUNDATION, INC. SCHOLARSHIPS
The Greenbrier County Schools Foundation, Inc. will sponsor two scholarships this year:
1) Stephen Baldwin Memorial Scholarship: This $500 scholarship will be awarded annually to one or more high
school seniors in Greenbrier County who will be attending an accredited college or vocational school. This
scholarship is in memory of Stephen Baldwin, former Superintendent of Schools.
Eligibility:
 Graduating from a Greenbrier Co. high school.
 Must attend an accredited college or vocational school
 Must exhibit a financial need
 Must have positive personal and academic characteristics and a strong work ethic.
2) David Yarid Memorial Scholarship: The family of David Yarid, who graduated from Greenbrier East in 1977,
will award a $1,000.00 scholarship to a qualifying Greenbrier East business student pursuing a career in a
business field. This award is given in $250 increments yearly for four years.
GREENBRIER VALLEY HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP
A $500 cash scholarship will be awarded each year. The eligible student must be continuing in a post-secondary
education building construction certification or degree program. The scholarship will be dispersed in two cash awards:
The first ($250) beginning the first semester and the second ($250) beginning the second semester. It is the responsibility
of the student to provide the Homebuilders Association proof of registration in an eligible certification or degree program.
Criteria considerations include financial need, academic achievement, school and community involvement and character.

Applicants must express serious commitment to the pursuit of a career in building construction and must be prepared to
meet with the Homebuilders Association for an interview.
Eligibility:
 Student of Greenbrier East High School
 Student must complete the four (4) Core Courses in Building Construction
 Student must pass the four (4) EOC Tests for each core course
 Student must be entering a building construction certification or degree program
GREENBRIER VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER ALLIED HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP
Greenbrier Valley Medical Center will award a $1,000.00 one-time scholarship to one graduating senior from each of the
high schools listed below. Applicants must express a serious commitment to the pursuit of a career in the allied health
services field. This scholarship will be awarded upon successful completion of one semester in an allied health
track at an accredited college or university. The GVMC scholarship can only be applied towards tuition expenses
or the purchase of textbooks.
Eligibility:
 Applicant must be a graduating senior from Greenbrier East, Greenbrier West, James Monroe or Pocahontas
County High Schools.
GREENBRIER VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER ALLIED HEALTH SCHOLARSHIP (continued)
 Applicant must demonstrate a need for financial assistance.
 Recipient will be selected on the basis of financial need, character, community service activities and the expressed
desire to pursue a career in the allied health field particularly in West Virginia.
 No applicant shall be disqualified on the basis of race, color, creed, sex or religion. Also, no applicant shall be
disqualified on the basis of his/her relationship to any employee (past or present) of Greenbrier Valley Medical
Center.
Additional requirements:
A one-page, double-spaced typed statement about the importance of choosing a career in the allied health field must
accompany the application. Please include current career goals and reasons for selecting a particular career. If you plan
to practice or work in West Virginia, please indicate this in your one-page statement. Applicant may be asked to appear
before the GVMC Board of Trustees Scholarship Committee for a brief interview.
GREENBRIER VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER VOLUNTEER AUXILIARY SCHOLARSHIP
The Volunteer Auxiliary Scholarship of GREENBRIER Valley Medical Center will present a $1,000.00 scholarship to a
qualifying student who is interested in pursuing a career in a health related field. The scholarship money will be paid to
the financial office of the institution to which the recipient has been accepted. This scholarship is strictly for tuition. In
the event tuition is wavered or the recipient receives other scholarships beyond the required tuition fee, this scholarship is
void and the money will be awarded to an alternate candidate.
Eligibility: The recipient will be awarded the scholarship based on the following guidelines and personal interview:
 Must have a “B” average or higher for the Junior and Senior years of high school
 Must have an acceptable school attendance record
 Must have been accepted in an accredited school
 Must have a monetary need
 Must have immediate plans to continue post high school education in the health related field
Additional requirements:
The applicant must write and sign a short essay on why he/she has chosen a career in a health related field.

DICK GUNNOE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Dick Gunnoe Memorial Scholarship is a one- time $1,000.00 scholarship to a student of Greenbrier East High School.
Eligibility:
 First priority will be given to a vocational student at Greenbrier East High School.
 Second priority will be given to a student who wants to pursue an academic curriculum and whose academic
performance and GPA have improved over the last three years at East.
BILL HOLLANDSWORTH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is given in memory of Bill Hollandsworth. Bill was dedicated to his family and farming. He loved the
outdoors and spent all of his life taking care of the family farm, land and animals. This scholarship of $500.00 will be
given to a student that is continuing their education in the agricultural field.
Eligibility:
 Priority for this scholarship will be awarded to high school seniors from Frankford School attendance area that are
continuing education in the agricultural field either at a college or technical school.
Additional Requirements:
Student must submit an essay that includes general information about the student, career goals, educational plans and why
he/she should be awarded this scholarship.
ROBBIE JONES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Robbie Jones Memorial Scholarship is in the amount of $1,000.00.
Eligibility:
 Greenbrier East High School Senior boy or girl soccer player
 WV Colleges or Universities
 GPA of 3.0 minimum
Additional Requirements:
Student must submit documentation of acceptance to WV College or University. Preference will be given to student
accepted to Shepherd College.
BARRY KEADLE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
This $500.00 scholarship is in memory of Barry Keadle.
Eligibility:
 Student must be an athlete
 GPA of at least 3.0
 Any major
 Attending any accredited college/institution
LEWISBURG ELKS LODGE SCHOLARSHIP
The Lewisburg Elks Lodge will award four $500.00 scholarships, one for each of the four schools: Greenbrier East,
Greenbrier West, James Monroe and Pocahontas County High Schools.
Eligibility:
 Financial Need
 Will consider academics, leadership and community service
 3.0 or above GPA
 Special consideration given to children of Elks member
 Documentation of acceptance by a college or vocational school

LEWISBURG BUSINESS & PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S CLUB ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP
Annual scholarship(s) open to any female student attending the Greenbrier Campus of the New River Community and
Technical College. Number and value of the scholarships are subject to change from year to year.
Eligibility:
 Must be female
 Must attend Greenbrier Campus of New River Community & Technical College
 Must carry a minimum of 6 credit hours per semester
 Must maintain a 3.0 GPA
Additional Requirements:
 Require completion of Greenbrier Valley Scholarship Program Application Form only. Do not require essay,
volunteer service form, etc.
 An interview will be required.
 Recipient(s) will be expected to speak at a BPW club meeting.
 Recipient(s) will be expected to donate 4 hours of time to help at BPW Club’s Annual Arts & Crafts Fair, held 2nd
weekend of October.
LEWISBURG LIONS CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS
The Lewisburg Lions Club will be awarding two scholarships
1) The Lewisburg Lions Club Scholarship:
Eligibility:
The Lewisburg Lions Club will be awarding a $1,000.00 scholarship to a student from Greenbrier East High School and
be in the Lewisburg Lions service area (we do not compete with other club areas.)
Additional requirements:
Applicant’s essay must be about his/her major in college, why it was chosen and future plans.
2) J. Bright Hern Memorial Scholarship:
Eligibility:
The Lewisburg Lions Club will be awarding a $1,000.00 scholarship in memory of J. Bright Hern to a student from
Greenbrier East High School and be in the Lewisburg Lions service area (we do not compete with other club areas.)
Additional requirements:
Applicant must include an essay about major in college, why it was chosen and future plans.
LEWISBURG ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP
The Lewisburg Rotary Foundation raises funds through the WV State Fair Chicken Shack and donations to the foundation.
The club will present approximately eight $1,000 scholarships based on need, academic performance, and community
involvement. In addition, the club will be coordinating three additional $1,000 scholarships through the ONE Foundation
Scholarship Program. for students planning to attend New River Community and Technical College.
Eligibility:
 Greenbrier East graduating senior accepted to an accredited college or university
 Must excel in the areas of character, service to others and scholarship
 Students may be asked to participate in an interview process.

MAXWELTON RURITANS SCHOLARSHIP
Henry Lindsey Scholarship:
This scholarship is $2,000.00 over four years distributed $250.00 each semester.
Double Your Dollars Scholarship:
(A) With a participating college or university: A partnership between the Maxwelton Ruritan Club, the National Ruritan
Foundation and certain colleges and universities in which the college or university matches $600.00 of the Ruritan
scholarship amount. A student for this scholarship, attending a participating college or university, (Bluefield State
College and Concord College are participants) will receive a total of $2,000.00 over four years as follows--$700.00 in
the first semester from Maxwelton Ruritan Club plus $600.00 from the participating college or university dispersed
under the college or university rules plus $100.00 each consecutive semester for seven semesters from Maxwelton
Ruritan Club if the student maintains a “C” average or above after the first semester.
(B) Without a participating college or university: A partnership between the Maxwelton Ruritan Club and the National
Ruritan Foundation for selected students not attending a participating college or university. A student selected for this
scholarship, not attending a participating college or university, will receive a total of $1,400.00 over four years as
follows--$700.00 in the first semester from Maxwelton Ruritan Club plus $100.00 each consecutive semester for
seven semesters from Maxwelton Ruritan Club if the student maintains a “C” average or above for the first semester.
Requirements for both scholarships:
Both scholarships are intended for distribution over a period of four consecutive years. The Maxwelton Ruritan Club
must approve an interruption in attendance and approval may only be granted for medical or other hardship reasons as
determined by the Club. Proof of acceptance, continued attendance and maintenance of a submitted to the Treasurer of
the Maxwelton Ruritan Club before funds will be distributed.
Additional Requirements:
Scholarship recipient, family member or other representative must work three shifts at our fair concession per year or the
scholarship will become void.
Eligibility:
Selected students must reside within the Maxwelton Ruritan Club boundaries. These boundaries are as follows: Bounded
on the south by the northern boundary of the City of Lewisburg; bounded on the east by the Greenbrier River; bounded on
the north by the southern boundary of the Renick Town limits; and, bounded on the west by Fairview Road and Unus
Route. Eligible children of Maxwelton Ruritan Club Members living outside of these boundaries may also be selected. If
there is a question regarding residence within the boundaries, the Maxwelton Ruritan Club makes the final decision.
Candidates for selection must plan to enroll or be accepted for enrollment in a recognized and approved four-year college
or university after graduation from Greenbrier East High School. Candidates for consideration may pursue any college
discipline leading to an AB or BS degree. Candidates are considered and selected for a scholarship by the Maxwelton
Ruritan Club on the basis of faculty recommendations, scholastic achievement, financial need, community volunteer
activities and participation in school activities.
ROGER NEELY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
Roger Neely was a math teacher in Greenbrier County for nearly twenty years. Other than his faith and his family,
nothing meant more to him than his students. He had the unique ability to see the best in everyone and a sincere desire for
each of his students to reach their full potential. It is for this reason, that after his death in 1985, Mr. Neely’s family set up
a scholarship in his memory.
Eligibility:
This scholarship is available to any Greenbrier County student that wants to continue his or her education.
PEO SISTERHOOD CHAPTER 0 MEMORIAL EDUCATION FUND
Chapter O, PEO Sisterhood, has funds available for continuing education for women. The purpose of the Fund is to give
women an educational opportunity by providing financial and emotional support that they might not receive otherwise.
The award is usually $500.00.
Eligibility:
Any woman, regardless of age, ability, type of education now held or type of education desired.

TAHOE FARM CLUB SCHOLARSHIP
This $500 scholarship is a one-time award for a student continuing their education in the agricultural field.
High school senior may be from Greenbrier, Monroe, Pocahontas, Raleigh, Fayette or Nicholas counties.
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS LIONS CLUB KAREN BELT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Karen Belt Memorial Scholarship is awarded in memory of the daughter of Burgess Belt, a deceased Lion who
always did more than his share to make our community a better place to live. His daughter, Karen, was and would have
continued this family involvement. We hope that the recipient will follow in their footsteps. Scholarship amount is
$500.00.
Eligibility:
 Check is payable the second year of college. The student should contact a club member when he/she begins the
second year.
 Applicant must be a current resident of White Sulphur Springs with zip code of 24986.

WILLOW RIDGE MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS SCHOLARSHIP
A $400 scholarship will be given to a high school senior at each of the four area high schools-- Greenbrier East,
Greenbrier West, James Monroe, and Pocahontas Co--- planning to attend college or vocational education. Award will be
made to the college or technical school of the winning applicant’s choice with proof of admission.
Eligibility:
 Applicants must be a senior high school student at one of the four area high schools who is going to college or
vocational school.
Requirement:

The typed essay shall be at least 3 pages double- spaced on a topic pertinent to mental health or mental illness in our
world today.
Noble C Legg Music Scholarship
The Noble C. Legg Music Scholarship is awarded
In memory of Noble C. Legg. Mrs. Legg was a band and choral director in Greenbrier County for over 30 years and
dedicated her life to educating students in the appreciation of music.

The ALEF provides academic and financial support to talented young men and women who display academic and
leadership abilities. Full scholarships are available to Concord (any major), Shepherd (any major), Marshall University
(for civil engineering or Safety Technology majors only) and Davis and Elkins College (any major) for recipient.

 Be a graduating high school senior
 Complete a FAFSA form to the selected college.
 Have at least a 2.8 GPA

ZELLA G. CLARK AND EMMETT P. CLARK MEMORIAL EDUCATION TRUST SCHOLARSHIP
Zella and Emmett Clark established a Trust to provide scholarship(s) to graduating seniors or already established college
students from Monroe or Greenbrier counties to attend accredited colleges or vocational schools. A separate application
for these scholarships is available through the counselor’s office and is to be mailed by March 15 each year to PO Box

Eligibility:
 Students have demonstrated the initiative to help themselves, by membership in the reserve component of any branch
of military, employment while in high school, or similar means. OR
 Student has devoted substantial time to caring for a disabled relative while in high school. OR
 Student has performed substantial volunteer service while in high school.
 Must be enrolled as a full-time college or vocational school student and maintained at least a 2.5 GPA while in high
school and continue at least a 2.5 GPA on college.

characteristics. This scholarship award is not automatically renewable.

ELISABETH BROWN JACOBSON SCHOLARSHIP
This scholarship is to assist persons of any age in pursuing an education beyond secondary school. It is available to
anyone who lives in Greenbrier, Pocahontas or Monroe Counties, WV. This education may be from a college, university,
trade, vocational or other school, including a school of registered or practical nurses training. Grade point average shall
not be a primary qualifying standard for a scholarship award, but a “satisfactory” average shall be necessary to the
maintenance of an award from term to term. The financial need of the applicant shall be a primary standard with special
consideration being given to the initiative and motivation of the applicant to obtain a vocational or professional career.
Approximately $4,500.00 may be awarded to one or more applicants.

 One letter of recommendation
 One letter describing why you want this scholarship
 Attach a letter or certificate of acceptance from the school or other institution that you plan to attend. If such a letter

 If you have applied and received the scholarship in any previous year, please submit a copy of your grade transcript

The purpose of this award is to honor a graduating secondary school student or students irrespective of grade point

MARTHA STUART ODEN SCHOLARSHIP
The Martha Stuart Oden Scholarship is a part of the Robert H. Mollohan Family Charitable Foundation, Inc. Ms. Oden
spent most of her young years in Ronceverte, WV and attended Ronceverte Elementary School and began the ninth grade
at Greenbrier High School. She was active in school and church activities and enjoyed music and played piano and
saxaphone in the Greenbrier High School band. Martha won the Golden Horseshoe award in 1954. She was in the ninth
grade when she died on April 6, 1955. At the graduation in 1958, a chair was left empty for Martha. Martha’s family
established this $1000 scholarship to honor Martha’s memory and her desire to pursue an education beyond high school.
Eligibility: (Application deadline Feb 8)
 $1000 scholarship awarded annually to a Greenbrier East High School graduating senior accepted at any college,
university, or vocational program.
 Check will be made payable directly to the student’s college with proof of acceptance.
 The scholarship committee will assist the student with possible summer internship experience in West Virginia
focusing on the recipient’s area of career interest.

The Heritage Gospel Community Choir is the sponsor of the Geraldine Penn Memorial Scholarship. This $500.00
scholarship is presented annually in memory of Mrs. Penn who was a faithful and dedicated member until her death in
January of 1994.

THROTTLE THROBS CAR CLUB - GREG CARTER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Throttle Throbs Car Club of Greenbrier County has established a memorial scholarship fund in memory of Greg
Carter. Greg was a Lewisburg fireman who lost his life in the line of duty. Two scholarships of $1,000 each will be
awarded to graduating seniors from Greenbrier East or Greenbrier West.

The West Virginia Parent Teacher Association will award as many $500 scholarships as funds permit.
