Mignone, Academic Chairperson Foreign Language/ESL/Reading DATE: October 11, 2005 RE: Formal Proposal to Remove Lab Requirements for 4th Semester French, German, Italian and Spanish During the Spring 2003 semester SP 52 (Intermediate Spanish II), the 4th semester in the Spanish language course sequence, utilized a new textbook which better served the shift in emphasis toward extensive reading and written/oral analysis of literary/cultural works. This “setup” reflects the current practice in the language program of most four year institutions in which the first three semesters deal with basic linguistic structure and the fourth semester is a “bridge” course which prepares students for the advanced courses. At that time I requested the removal of the Language Laboratory Requirement with its emphasis on linguistic practice. One year later I made the same request for IT 52 (Intermediate Italian II). Both requests to remove the lab requirement for these courses were approved by Deans Chirch and Arrigon, but without formal proposals to the Curriculum Committee which I was told by them was not necessary. This semester I have been informed that I must submit this request to eliminate the Lab requirement to the College Wide Curriculum Committee. Thus, I request that the Language Lab Requirement for FR 52, GE 52, IT 52, and SP 52 be eliminated in order for students, who will have utilized the Language Lab as an integral part of the 1st , 2nd and 3rd semester French, German, Italian, and Spanish programs, to concentrate on more intensive reading and writing skills in preparation for advanced courses taken at SCCC or at four year transfer institutions. Mignone, Academic Chair FROM: Dr. Philip H. Christensen, Campus Dean DATE: October 14, 2005 I support the elimination of the lab requirements for 4th Semester French, German, Italian and Spanish. As Dr. Mignone articulates, elimination of the 4th semester lab requirement will allow “students, who will have utilized the Language Lab as an integral part of the 1st , 2nd and 3rd semester French, German, Italian, and Spanish programs, to concentrate on more intensive reading and writing skills in preparation for advanced courses taken at SCCC or at four year transfer institutions.” Copies to: Proposer Chairs of Campus Curriculum Committees Academic Chairs of affected Departments Campus Deans Chair of College Curriculum Committee Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Associate Dean of Library Services ALL OF THESE FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY Revised 9/2004 Suffolk County Community College - College Curriculum Committee Letter of Support from Campus Dean(s) TO: Dr. Lois P. Mignone, Academic Chair FROM: Dr. Shaun McKay, Campus Dean DATE: October 17, 2005 Please accept this letter of support for the elimination of lab requirements for 4th Semester French, German, Italian and Spanish. As indicated in the proposal, the elimination of the 4th semester lab requirement will allow “students, who will have utilized the Language Lab as an integral part of the 1st , 2nd and 3rd semester French, German, Italian, and Spanish programs, to concentrate on more intensive reading and writing skills in preparation for advanced courses taken at SCCC or at four year transfer institutions.” Copies to: Proposer Chairs of Campus Curriculum Committees Academic Chairs of affected Departments Campus Deans Chair of College Curriculum Committee Associate Dean for Curriculum and Assessment Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Associate Dean of Library Services ALL OF THESE FORMS MUST BE SUBMITTED ELECTRONICALLY Revised 9/2004 Suffolk County Community College - College Curriculum Committee Letter of Support from Campus Dean(s) TO: Dr. Lois P. Mignone, Academic Chair FROM: William F. Connors, Jr. – Executive Dean DATE: October 12, 2005 The language laboratory component of a foreign language course is an integral component of contemporary pedagogy. However, you make a sound case for removing the requirement for our fourth semester language course in French, German, Italian, and Spanish since it serves as a “bridge” course which prepares students for advanced courses. I support your proposal. I support the proposal. Edward Joyce, Humanities Chair, Eastern Campus FORMAT FOR NEW COURSE/CURRICULUM PROPOSALS OR COURSE/CURRICULUM MODIFICATION ORIGINATING CAMPUS: (xx) Ammerman (xx) Eastern (xx) Western To meet the ideals of Suffolk County Community College, new courses/curriculum should, if appropriate, consider issues arising from elements of cultural diversity. Among the areas in which this can be realized are: textbook choice, selection of library and audio-visual materials, and teaching methodology. Guidelines: Not every item in this format is applicable to every course proposal. Responses of NOT APPLICABLE are acceptable in such instances. The Counseling Office and Library of each campus have materials that can help locate answers about transferability (II d.) and other colleges that offer similar courses (VI a. and b.). Information about offerings at other colleges does not require complete listings where such offerings are numerous. A summary or sampling will suffice. I.
