Duties and responsibilities of post

Provide careers advice to UCC students, graduates and Alumni. This involves conducting oneto-one advisory interviews (usually of 20 minutes duration), helping students to prepare
individual career action plans and delivering career related workshops and seminars to groups
of students. The Careers Advisor may be delegated responsibility for a specific group of
students.

Responsibility for managing and leadership of careers service projects as allocated to you. This
may involve working with and delegating duties to other advisory and administrative staff in the
careers service. it is the responsibility of the careers advisor to ensure that the objectives of the
project are achieved on time and within budget

The advisor will spend a significant portion of their work time meeting students in one to one
short interviews (usually of 20 minutes duration) They will be expected to provide accurate and
up to date information and facilitate the students’ career decision making process. Examples of
subjects discussed include:
 Self assessment and evaluation of skills/interests/motivations
 Changing course: course choices/ process for changing including CAO/UCAS and other/
helping with the applications and referring student to the relevant personnel within UCC and
externally (e.g. Retention Officer, Admissions Office/ Counselling Service/ External
Institutions)
 Guidance within the Undergraduate degree programmes: Subject choice and career
implications, career options in Ireland and abroad.
 Postgraduate options: Higher diploma / Masters and PhD options in Ireland and abroad
 Employment: Career options/ graduate recruitment/ Application’s/ CV’s/ Interview practice.
Industry sectors and graduate recruitment process’s of graduate recruiters in Ireland, UK
and abroad.
 Work context/transferable skills: Enabling students to identify and articulate the
transferability of their key skills on paper/online applications and in interview.

Design, coordinate and present career related workshops and seminars to groups of students
to enhance student career management skills into the future. This includes CV preparation,
Interview techniques, work place skills, course specific presentations and workshops etc.

To support and provide guidance on various issues and queries for academic programmes.
This requires an in-depth knowledge of programmes offered in all Academic Departments as
well as sector specific knowledge.

To provide Career advice online through email correspondence and effective management of
same.

Working with other members of the Careers Service team to ensure that the objectives of the
Service are achieved. Assisting with the development of the Careers Service.

Participate in programmes of activity arranged by the Careers Service including careers talks,
milkround evenings, careers fairs, etc

Participate as required in joint initiatives between the Careers Service and other UCC
departments. This may involve the post holder working in other parts of the campus and off
campus.

Prepare careers information material as allocated to you. Develop research and prepare
reports and statistics for the use of students, the university and other interested parties as
required.

To be responsible for researching, revising and writing career service publications; this may
involves liaison with academic departments, faculties, student service departments within UCC
and outside bodies e.g. design consultants. Sample publications include:
 Internal Brochures, booklets and fact sheets
 Newspaper and Radio promotion and articles
 Website development with article additions and relevant information

To be familiar with employment trends and the options available to graduates of U.C.C. To
actively identify employment opportunities for students. Areas include:
 Graduate Recruitment – Events / Fairs / Milk round
 Assist Work Placement Officer with student interview preparation
 Company visits and contact with HR Departments to feedback pertinent graduate
recruitment information on recruitment and selection to students

Participate in UCC pre-entry and access programmes. This may entail participation in selected
second level career fairs and College open days.

Work closely with staff in the careers information room to ensure a consistently high level of
service to clients. This may also include manning the reception area of the information room
from time to time

The Careers Service remains open during Lunchtime. Careers Advisors are required to
participate fully in the lunchtime rota to ensure that adequate service levels are maintained
during this time.

The nature of the role may require the adviser to work evenings and weekends. The adviser
will receive time off in lieu for any duties undertaken outside of normal working hours.

Other duties or projects assigned by the Head of the Careers Service or his nominee.
Note; as the University continues to expand and evolve, it is likely that flexibility in regard
to the allocation of specific duties will be necessary. Accordingly the list of duties detailed
above is not intended to be exclusive or restrictive, duties may be added or withdrawn but
any such alterations will take place within the remit of the head of department/office and
after consultation with the appointee.
Selection Criteria
Decisions made at short listing and interview will be based on the following criteria:Qualifications, Experience and Skills:
The appointed person will be a graduate with relevant experience in a careers advisory capacity in
a third level or recruitment environment. A post graduate qualification in a related area whilst not
essential would be an advantage. S/he should have a thorough understanding of the third level
education and graduate recruitment sectors. The successful candidate will have a high level of
self-motivation and will have excellent one to one interpersonal skills.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Appointment will be within the following salary scale, depending on qualifications and experience:
€45,507-€54,663 Scale B [new entrants]
Annual leave is 26 working days per annum, pro rata, with additional leave at prescribed times,
total 34 days per annum.
Normal hours of duty are Monday to Friday, 9.15 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. with 70 minutes for lunch.
Due to the nature and seniority of the post, however, it may be necessary to extend and vary these
hours from time to time in order to meet the exigencies of the post.
Sick Leave: Subject to certain conditions staff may be allowed up to 130 working days, (6 months)
sick leave at full pay and a further 130 working days, at half pay in any 12-month period. This is
subject to the staff member not exceeding 260 working days, (1 year) sick leave, at either full or
half pay, in any period of 4 years.
The tenure of the post is based on the following provisions:
(a) A probationary period of one year shall apply from commencement of employment in the post
during which the contract of employment may be terminated by either party in accordance with the
Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Acts, 1973 to 2001. The probationary period may be
extended at the discretion of the University.
(b) Except in circumstances of gross misconduct justifying immediate dismissal, the appointee will
receive one month's notice of termination of employment, or, if greater, such notice as is provided
for in a minimum notice in terms of Employment Act, 1973.
(c) The appointee is required to give one month's notice of termination of employment.
(d) Under the Public Service Superannuation Act 2004, for all new entrants to the Public Sector on
or after April 2004, the normal retirement age is 65. It is no longer possible therefore to retire
before age 65.
Pension: There is an excellent pension scheme in operation, which provides personal retirement
benefits as well as benefits for spouses and children.
The overall contribution rate approximates to 6½% of salary (3% of pensionable remuneration and
3½% of net pensionable remuneration). Tax relief is accrued on these payments.
The maximum pension, based on 40 years reckonable service, comprises an occupational pension
from UCC with an entitlement to a contributory state pension. Together both pensions provide a
maximum of 50% of final salary and the UCC scheme provides a lump sum of 1½ times final salary
(currently tax free). The University operates schemes for the transfer of service or pension
benefits from other schemes and a purchase scheme to allow members to increase their
pensionable service.
In addition, additional dependants’ benefits can be provided by membership of the Voluntary Life
Assurance Scheme.
Membership of the Group Personal Accident Scheme shall apply to all employees, subject to
individual acceptance by the Insurance Company. The salary quoted is subject to a deduction
from salary at the rate of .001%
The Pay Related Social Insurance Class A1 rate of Pay Related Social Insurance (PRSI) applies
to the posts which is currently 6% with an earnings ceiling of €46,600, 2% is payable on the
balance.
Voluntary Health Insurance: A VHI/BUPA/HAS/VIVAS Health group scheme is in operation and
contribution may be deducted from salary on request.

and a wide range of facilities on campus, including a leisure centre.
