Leading Teacher
SALARY:
£27,800 PRP

REPORTS TO:
Principal Designate
MAIN PURPOSE OF THE JOB
As part of the Senior Leadership Team, the Leading Teacher will be an outstanding practitioner who will improve the
skills, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce at Jubilee Primary School.
They will carry out the duties and responsibilities of a teacher, as defined in the ‘School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions
of Service’ document, having due regard to the school’s aims and objectives, curriculum and any policies of the
Governing Body.
In addition to the requirements of a class teacher and other roles below stated, the Leading Teacher will be expected
to fulfil the following expectations and other duties as assigned by the Principal Designate. Further time out of class
in addition to PPA will be given for specific activities as required.
Key responsibilities:
In conjunction with the Senior Leadership Team, the Leading Teacher will lead on:
 The teaching of outstanding demonstration lessons.
 Provision of professional support to teaching staff in the form of coaching and mentoring.
 Developing high expectations for presentation of pupils’ work across the whole school.
 The development of an exciting and effective curriculum for pupils.
 The ongoing review and development of effective teaching and learning strategies throughout the school.
General responsibilities:
In addition to carrying out the professional duties of a teacher, the Leading Teacher will support the:
 School Self Evaluation and Development Planning.
 Review and development of the aims and objectives of the school.
 Establishment of whole school policies and practices.
 Monitoring of standards, quality and outcomes in order to evaluate progress on priorities set.
Other responsibilities:
As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Leading Teacher will:
 Share with the Leadership Team responsibility for the administration and management of the school.
 Share responsibility with the Leadership Team for promoting high standards of attitude and behaviour.
 Share responsibility for planning and decision making in all aspects of school life.
 Attend meetings with the Principal Designate and meetings of the Leadership Team.
 Attend and advise meetings of the Governing Body and its committees as required.
 Attend the Parent Teacher Association activities and support school functions.
 Take a share of assemblies.
 Promote good relationships between all staff (both teaching and non-teaching) and with parents, governors
and the wider community.
 Strongly support the vision, aims and ethos and policies of the school and promote high levels of
achievement.
 Foster a climate within the school which promotes the spiritual, moral and cultural development of the pupils.
 Support the creation, implementation and monitoring of the school within the national and local context, taking
sole responsibility for appropriately delegated aspects of it.
 Support all staff in meeting personal targets and helping in achieving the priorities and targets which the
school sets for itself and line manage the performance management of main scale teachers.
 Support the evaluation of the effectiveness of the school’s policies and developments.
 Ensure that parents and carers are well informed about the school curriculum, its targets, children’s
attainment and their part in the process of improvement.

Learning and teaching - general:
In co-operation with and under the direction of the Principal Designate, the Leading Teacher will be expected to:
 Develop classroom environments and teaching practice which secures effective learning across the breadth
of the school curriculum.
 Provide a professional model, clearly demonstrating effective teaching, classroom organisation and display,
and high standards of achievement, behaviour and discipline.
 Take responsibility for the development and monitoring of curriculum areas and aspects of the whole school
curriculum as required.
 Support the Principal Designate in the monitoring of the quality of teaching and children’s achievements,
including the analysis of performance data.
 Support the Principal Designate in developing links with parents, carers, other schools, educational
institutions and the wider community, in order to enhance teaching and learning and children’s personal
development.
Leading and managing staff:
In co-operation with and under the direction of the Principal Designate, the Leading Teacher will be expected to:
 Develop, promote and maintain caring working relationships between all staff.
 Provide support for the continuing development of all staff.
 Communicate between the staff and the Principal Designate in matters of ethos, policy, organisation and
discipline.
 Undertake project management.
 Assist in the compilation, supervision and operation of timetables and rotas.
YEAR LEADER ROLE:
The Curriculum



To provide professional leadership and support staff in the year group with the delivery of the curriculum.
To ensure that year group information stored on the network system is kept up to date.
To support staff in the year group to differentiate the curriculum to meet the needs of all children.
Promoting Effective Teaching and Raising Standards
 To ensure that teaching and learning within the EYFS and KS1 is outstanding.
 To ensure that almost all pupils make rapid and sustained progress within the year group.
 To ensure that teachers are planning effectively within the EYFS and KS1 and to support them through
shared input and weekly monitoring.
 To analyse the year group data in order to inform planning and identify pupils for group or individual targeted
teaching.
 To be fully acquainted with RAISEonline and the EYFS or KS1 profile and recognise its importance in the
target setting process.
 To be fully involved in the school’s self evaluation process, including target setting.
Personnel
 To manage and support the professional development of staff within the EYFS and KS1 by:
o working alongside colleagues in their classrooms to observe styles of teaching and share good
practice;
o being fully acquainted with school policies and to advise and support staff with their implementation
in a positive manner;
o being a role model to staff e.g. modelling excellence in teaching and teamwork.
 Ensure the curriculum needs of the year group teachers are supported by identifying areas for development
and liaising with subject leaders on best practice.
 Ensure that staff are familiar with the assessment arrangements within the year group.
 Support and be involved in the induction programme of NQTs and other staff new to the year group.
Behaviour Management
 To support and advise staff within the EYFS and KS1 on the implementation of the school’s Behaviour and
Discipline Policy.
 To meet with parents of pupils in the EYFS and KS1 to discuss and advise them on issues related to their
child’s behaviour.
 To bring to the Principal Designate’s attention issues and concerns related to specific children with
behavioural problems.
 To monitor children with challenging behaviour in line with the school’s Code of Practice.
 To support the Principal Designate with INSET for staff.

Organisation
 To delegate the organisation of activities and tasks to EYFS and KS1 members to give them professional
development opportunities.
Administration
 To have prepared activities for supply teachers if work has not been set by the class teacher.
 To prepare agendas and ensure minutes are taken at EYFS and KS1 meetings.
 To prepare the year group newsletter
 Collate EYFS or KS1 programmes of study in all areas of learning.
 Regularly disseminate information about planning and assessment to EYFS and KS1 colleagues.
AS CURRICULUM TEAM LEADER:






In consultation with the Principal Designate produce a development plan that identifies priorities for
improvement.
Ensure that curriculum policies in the team’s areas of responsibility are up to date and reflect best practice.
Ensure that pupils receive a broad and balanced curriculum, personalised to meet their individual needs and
allows them to develop as independent learners and thinkers.
Monitor and evaluate standards of teaching and learning in the foundation curriculum.
Ensure that the quality of display throughout the school is of a high quality and reflects the pupils’ learning.
Ensure that the school’s extra-curricular and out of hours learning programmes provide opportunities for as
many pupils as possible to participate in activities that enrich their learning and cultivate their interests.

PERSON SPECIFICATION
Leading Teacher
Experience:











Qualified teacher with significant experience and exemplary practice in
EYFS or KS1
Proven track record of effective teaching in EYFS or KS1
Leadership experience at middle leader/senior level
Experience of monitoring the quality of teaching and learning
Excellent knowledge of the EYFS or KS1 curriculum
Experience and commitment to delivering a ‘creative’ curriculum
Experience of using assessment data at EYFS or KS1 level to support
school improvement
Experience of school self-review – school improvement planning and
evaluation
Highly effective at delivering INSET and working alongside and supporting
colleagues
Experience of being a reviewer for teaching
An up to date knowledge of child protection procedures and commitment to
safeguarding pupils
