Disseminate information and materials and arrange for model lessons, as needed. During the school year, conduct a family and/or student science activity that actively engages parents and students. Analyze school and county science data to assess student performance in school-based lead teacher meetings. Develop “watch list” of students who need additional support to be successful on Science Standards of Learning tests. Support new teachers’ understanding of the elementary science program: Conduct one fall meeting with all new teachers of science, including ESOL/HILT and Special Education, to review curriculum, give suggestions for and answer questions about the science curriculum, best instructional practices, and assessment strategies and procedures. Conduct a follow-up meeting before fall parent-teacher conferences to discuss sharing assessment data and information about student progress. Provide help with science, as needed, during the year. Analyze and respond to the needs of all teachers who teach science: Provide inservices/workshops for the staff on science during the school year in response to program needs and countywide lead teacher meetings. Discuss pacing and facilitate communication across grade levels each quarter. Provide help with science, as needed, during the year. Inventory and organize science texts, equipment, materials, as needed, and coordinate additional ordering. Make teachers aware of the science resources available in the school. Participate in sustained, ongoing lead teacher professional development and provide school based trainings: Attend lead teacher meetings, including a summer building level meeting of content and instructional lead teachers with building administrator(s). Participate in other professional development opportunities.
