FROM THE PRINCIPAL
It is hard to believe that it is week
six and the term is already half
over. There has been many things
happening and it is hard to keep up!
Our Year 12 students are busy
finishing their final assessment and
preparing for life beyond Southport
State High School. We certainly
wish them well, and all our staff are doing their
utmost to ensure student success.
For students to be eligible to graduate and attend
the Formal, clearance must be met which
includes all assessment has to be completed. All
students and their families were recently given
the details of this clearance process. If you need
further information please contact our Senior
School Department.
It was amazing to see all the staff and students at
our annual Academic Awards Ceremony on
Wednesday 31st October. What was even more
amazing was the outstanding level of
achievement both individually and as a school.
Our successes have been many and as a school
we have certainly set a culture and expectation of
achievement. Huge congratulations to all staff
and students who earned awards, their hard work
and dedication has certainly paid off; well done!
Last Monday evening we held our Sports Awards
presentation and our Performing Arts Awards is
on this evening. It is great to see so many of our
talented students and staff receiving awards.
We also unveiled our new School Captains for
2013. Congratulations to School Captains Nathan
Hui and Rebecca Gillingham, and our Vice
Captains Chara Scroope, Shana Steel and
Lachlan Tzovaras. It was a very tough decision
with so many quality applicants. Joining them will
be eight other students who will make up our
Student Leader Executive. I have no doubt these
students will make wonderful ambassadors and
leaders for our school. Well done to all.

opportunities to achieve success with their final
assessments for the year. I promote it in every
newsletter that our Homework Centre is open
every Monday and Thursday from 3:00pm to
4:30pm in our Resource Centre. I encourage all
students to make the most of this valuable
resource.
Shortly in the mail all students and their families
will receive a letter that will outline all the updated
improvements for 2013 and other vital information.
I have already mentioned in three previous
newsletters the improvements in the Uniform
Policy. I will send the new Uniform Policy which
includes all the expectations that will be enforced.
I again thank the P&C for their valued contribution.
Just recently you may have seen some media
attention about cyber bullying and inappropriate
behaviour at our school. As Principal it is my role
to ensure that all students are supported in their
education and behave in accordance with our
school’s Responsible Plan for Students. I would
like to personally thank you all for your emails and
unwavering support of our school and our stance
on not accepting any inappropriate behaviour.
In closing I would like to say how very proud I am
of both the staff and students of Southport State
High School. Each and every day I am amazed
by the quality of work and the expectation we
have of each other to be the best we can be. I
would like to thank you, our parents and families,
for supporting us in our endeavour to be the best
school in Queensland.

SSHS wins Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award
Congratulations to Southport State High School for their entry in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
Art Award at the Gold Coast City Art Gallery. The winning entry was a combined entry from staff and
students under the guidance of Miss Maddie Hodge.
“Staff and students have shown a keen interest in indigenous story-telling, history, culture and art,” said
Miss Maddie. “In the classroom, we mainly focused on the Yugambeh language group - learning words,
and playing clapping sticks and didgeridoos. Students learned about the Saltwater (Yugambeh) people’s
traditional way of life when they were able to enjoy an abundance of seafood from local rivers. Students
also learned of a tawny frogmouth that used to live with its family in the school grounds. The various art
works on display at the art gallery grew out these classes.” Southport State High has about fifty indigenous
students.
The exhibition at the GC City Art Gallery, is on until November 25.

Art Expo
On the evening of Tuesday October 23, our school’s Art Expo was held in the Enterprise
Centre. It displayed more than 100 works from 60 students including drawings, paintings,
printmaking images, sculptures, furniture design, installations and wearable art. The Art
Expo is a celebration of student success where students have the opportunity to display
their creative genius in an exhibition setting and better understand the nature of the ‘real’
art world. The Art Expo also showcased talented students of our String Ensemble. There
was a fashion parade, an art table for adults and kids to create, a raffle and
complimentary refreshments. Congratulations to all our art students for their brilliant
artwork.

Introducing UNLIMITED
Wow! Having just returned from training to become a facilitator of a new
program called Unlimited, I couldn't be more excited about the prospect of
introducing this program to Southport State High School. Unlimited is all
about self-discovery and unlocking our unlimited human potential. The
lessons are so fun and engaging and will leave its participants with a tangible
taste of true friendship built on solid values. It has personally challenged and
inspired me! More info to come about the roll out of this program for 2013.

2012 Queensland All Schools Touch Competition
We have just returned from the 2012 Queensland All Schools Touch Competition, having entered two
teams: Year 8 Mixed and Junior Boys. The Year 8 Mixed players worked extremely hard under testing
conditions with no female subs and suffered a few injuries to male players. Despite the set-backs, all
players performed well above expectations resulting in us finishing one point out of the finals. On countback this saw us finish 17th in the state.
The squad included: John Eadie, Jye Thomson, Adam Skinner, Josh
Anderson, Matthew Baulch, Brodie Brewer, Jasmina Botonjic,
Gabrielle Pallister and Sapphire Rau. A special thank you to Jade Rau
for filling in for us on the Saturday with the unavailability of Gabby.
A big thank you to Sam Cronin for all of her support back at school, and to
parents, Vicki Skinner and Kerrie Thomson, for your support and
assistance at every game we played.
Most valuable player of the series for Southport SHS goes to John Eadie for the terrific leadership and
communication demonstrated on the field. Most improved for the tournament goes to Adam Skinner who
will definitely be a force to reckon with on the touch field in 2013. As a coach, I could not be prouder of
your efforts and look forward to working with you all again next year. Congratulations to all involved!

Hospitality Students Have Sole!
Recently our Year 11 and 12 Hospitality students were lucky enough to experience the
culinary expertise of Chef Paul from ICON Training.
Students watched as he demonstrated the skills needed to fillet fish before attempting
the task themselves. While some needed a little encouragement to handle the fish,
they soon overcame their reluctance to create a lovely crumbed sole and salad lunch
served with homemade tartare sauce.

RACQ Visit
On October 17, Year 11s and 12s received a presentation from the RACQ which informed us about the
RACQ website www.free2go.com.au
Free2go is RACQ’s youth membership program that is specially designed to help students get their licence,
stay safe on the road and start their journey as a motorist and car owner. Joining free2go allows students
to log their driving hours online and provides useful tips for safe driving. You can also access a course to
drive in your local area that will include obstacles, such as roundabouts, that will help you when you go for
your P-plates.RACQ asked us to join as a member on the day; it was completely free, so why not? As a
member, you also receive free roadside assistance for the first year and then half-price roadside assistance
for the second and third year. After we finished filling out the forms, there were some prizes to hand out.
Through random selection, six forms were pulled out and each person had a different question they had to
answer in order to win a prize.
RACQ’s presentation was very informative and engaging. Thank you to RACQ for your time.

Tuckshop and New Uniform
This year has been a busy one with tuckshop staff having to adapt to many changes. The year started with
new manager, Mel, and a self-serve system. The self-serve system is working better for students as they
are able to get their lunch more quickly than before although there is more preparation involved! On behalf
of the students at SSHS we would like to thank our ‘tuckshop ladies’ for their hard work and cheery natures.
Next year, with the beginning of our Flying Start program, we have a few changes to the school uniform.
New blouses and skirts will be required for the Year 7s and 8s and new hats, both bucket and caps. Please
note that no other hats will be allowed to be worn at school. For winter, an exciting new addition for girls are
navy stockings and both boys and girls may wear the school scarf.
