Curriculum Guide for 11th Grade Band Students
Skills and Concepts for the 6th year of Band
These are intended as extensions to the first 5 years of band concepts or introduced as
new concepts.

















Be able to count rhythms in simple and compound meter
Define and utilize vocabulary terms associated with music tempo style and dynamics
Learn and perform by memory all major scales and arpeggios and chromatic scales in
accordance with state requirements
To learn concert Bb, F, and C minor scales in natural, harmonic and melodic forms
Perform marching band music from memory
Demonstrate skills in marching fundamentals and be able to teach the skills to a small
group of students
Be able to play in tune individually and as a group
Sight read proficiently at Grade level III
Perform proficiently ensemble music at Grade level V
Perform solo literature proficiently at Grade level III-IV
Demonstrate various articulation styles in literature studied
Percussionists must be able to demonstrate the following:
a) Perform all major scales/arpeggios and chromatic scales from memory on
keyboard percussion instruments
b) Perform Bb, F, and C minor scales in natural, melodic, and harmonic forms on
keyboard percussion instruments
c) Demonstrate the ability to properly tune timpani to major 4ths and 5ths
d) Perform the following rudiments open-closed-open
1) flamacue
2) double ratamacue
3) drag paradiddle
4) 11 and 13 stroke rolls
Define intervals of minor 3rds, major 3rds, perfect 4ths, and perfect 5ths
Build and Identify 7th chords
Understand transposition of each instrument
Improve listening skills
Improve awareness of intonation and tone
Additional Honors Course Requirements


Required to Audition for All county and All District Bands
If All County or All District Band auditions do not occur during the attending
semester, the student must prepare and perform a solo or small ensemble piece of
literature
