Dear Mr. Dinu,
Two of our skull based surgeons took a look at the images you sent. (Dr.
Tew & Dr. Theodosopoulos) They both felt that they could absolutely help
your father surgically and would be happy to provider their professional
services at no cost to your family. That aside, there will be some cost
incurred from the stay and use of the hospital equipment. If you feel that
you are in a position to travel with your father to Cincinnati, we would be
happy to see him. According to our surgeons, the best case scenario for
this type of tumor would be surgery to remove as much as possible, followed
by radiation. Pending a positive outcome with both of these treatments, it
is possible that your father could have a full recovery.
Dr. Theodosopoulos said he would be happy to speak with you over the phone,
and I am certainly willing to do the same. If you'd like me to assemble
the costs for the hospital stay and inpatient care, please let me know,
Best to you and your family,
Candice

Hello Mr. Dinu,
Thank you for your prompt response. I look forward to receiving the
translated report. I've sent an email to the hospital for estimated costs.
We are looking at MRI prior to surgery, surgery, then immediate imaging
postoperatively and 2 days in intensive care followed by 3-5 days on the
recovery floor. The Pre-operative imaging can be done at Mayfield Clinic's
imaging center at no cost to your family but the remaining hospital stay
and inter-operative imaging will be billed through the hospital. I'm
hoping to have something today, but the woman who works on this is out of
town until Monday so I may not hear anything until then. I'll be in touch
as soon as I have something.
Thank you and have a good day,
Candice

Hello Christian,
I don't really understand the slowness of the hospital billing department
either. The Mayfield Clinic is a separate organization than the University
Hospital- we perform surgery at the University Hospital, but we do not,
unfortunately, control their billing or anything else. I sent another
email to their finance department asking what was taking so long. I'm
sorry that you're still waiting- and please have a wonderful birthday with
your father.
Best wishes,
Candice

Hello Christian,
I'm sorry that your father's birthday was held under such depressing
circumstances but happy that he had the chance to spend some time with
close family and friends. I am still waiting (somewhat impatiently for
finance information from the University Hospital. While we work very
closely with the University Hospital, they are not a part of the Mayfield
Clinic and often move VERY slowly. It is a large hospital system and
unfortunately they have a lot of people to coordinate in order to get us
the information that we need. My best guess is that is will probably cost
somewhere between 50,000 dollars US, and 100,000 dollars US. The cost of
the surgery equipment, operating room staff, and several over night stays
in the intensive care unit can be very pricey. I was hopeful that they
could get me an estimate sometime soon, so that I could then attempt to
negotiate a lower cost for you and your family, but I also do not want to
put your father's healthcare into any sort of delay.
I honestly believe that your father would do well here, but I know that it
is going to be very costly for your family. I will again contact the
hospital today in an effort to get you an estimate as soon as I possibly
can.
With kind regard,
Candice

Hello Christian,
Two out of nine deceased seems high- however, it is a very complicated
procedure in a delicate area of the brain. In addition, 8-9 cases this
year is less than what we'd do, but I am a little uncomfortable with a 30%
mortality or coma rate. I've asked Dr. Theo, who is a member of the
European society of medicine (he is from Greece originally) if he knows of
anyone who is close to Romania who might be able to perform such a
procedure, or who at least could give you another opinion. The paralysis
statistics are not entirely unusual- based on where the tumor is and how
close it is to the motor strip. I'm hoping he'll contact his staff between
cases today and we can get you some additional information quickly.
Thanks,
Candice
