Grade level: 9th grade biology Objectives: Students will demonstrate their understanding of classroom and laboratory safety rules. Materials: A variety of lab equipment, glassware, hot plates, goggles and aprons Soda/drink can and food container Premixed solutions and original containers clearly labeled Teacher Directions: Students have already been given laboratory and classroom rules and procedures The teacher will instruct students to take out a piece of paper and number it 1-15 Students are asked to observe and note all violations of laboratory and classroom safety, writing them down on their paper Teacher will act out breaking at least 15 classroom and laboratory rules. Adequate time must be given for all students to write down violations. Can be done as an independent assessment or as a group assessment Violations to enact no goggles or improper use no apron eating and/or drinking in classroom gum chewing horseplay long hair not tied back dangling clothing and/or jewelry open/no shoes loud/boisterous behavior misuse of lab equipment returning of chemicals to original container mouth pipeting throwing broken glass in class trash receptacle mixing random chemicals (Vinegar and baking soda is dramatic!) not following directions mishandling of hot glassware (Can you tell by looking if it is hot?) improper disposal of chemicals or biological material ( Not the sink!) sitting on lab counter/surfaces mishandling of biological specimens tasting lab solutions using damaged lab equipment leaving the laboratory while heating solutions without turning them off cruelty to living classroom pets or specimens Alternative learning opportunities: Students can design and write their own dramas showing improper or proper laboratory techniques to present to the class. Students can reenact the teacher’s drama or portions of it, corrected. Student Directions: Take out a piece of paper and number it 1-15 Write down all of the violations you see in drama. You may use you laboratory safety guides. Once completed re-enact the violations in the proper way.
