Service-specific Guidelines:
 Order Sets:
o Total knee arthroplasty order set
o Total hip arthroplasty order set

Post-op Protocals:
o Knees coumadin x 21 days, hips x 28 days (most are goal INR 1.5-2, unless told otherwise). See
Pre-operative plan / H&P.
o Review PCP, Dental and Anesthesia pre-op recs in StarPanel
o Review Pre-op CBC, Coags, UA, EKG.
o F/u 2 weeks with NP Aubrey, 6 weeks with Dr. Shinar.

Starpanel Templated Notes:
o You can use Atkinson Total Joints progress note.
o Notes should be in Starpanel before 0700

Service Guides:
o Carolyn Aubrey, NP will email weekly OR schedule and particulars about patients
Resident Roles and Expectations (Based on PGY level):
 Hospital Roles (Rounding, Notes, Orders, Pre-op, Post-op, etc)
o Rounds are split between the junior and senior residents
o To be completed prior to 0700 conference


Clinic Roles (Seeing patients, Dictating, Scheduling, etc)
o Both junior and senior residents go to clinic on Thursdays and Fridays
o Residents dictate all patient visits
 Notes are to be completed within 24 hours of seeing patent
 Notes are to be attested and sent to attending within 72 hours of seeing patient
o Clinic Dictation Guides for New and Follow-Up Patients
Conference Roles and Guidelines (Pre-op and Post-op conferences):
o none
Goals and Objectives (Based on PGY level):
1. Medical Knowledge and Patient Care
o Learn/know the relevant applied anatomy.
o Become proficient performing a history and physical exam.
o Know the indications for radiologic imaging as well as the interpretation of these tests.
o Understand the concepts of non-operative treatment, indications for/risks of surgery, and basic principles of
postoperative rehabilitation.
o Know the basic surgical approaches

Operative Core Competencies:
 Junior Resident
o Total hips – primary, posterior approach
o Total knees – varus total knee
o Resection arthroplasty – Indications for revision
o Placement of antibiotic spacer
 Senior Resident
o Revision Hip and Knee Arthroplasty
o Valgus Knee Arthroplasty
Attending Preferences (Pre-op, OR, Post-op, etc):

 No questions during cementing
