Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to:
–
assess the situation involving retrieval by rope, and
deploy appropriate equipment;
–
prepare patient for descent;
–
descend with patient and apply appropriate first aid and
basic life support;

set up and use hauling systems for retrieval purposes;
and;
–
demonstrate lead climbing and aid traversing retrieval
techniques.

Explanatory notes
1
This unit standard has been developed for learning and assessment on-job or off-job
in a simulated environment.

All tasks must be carried out in accordance with Best Practise Guide (BPG) based
on:
a quality management systems;
b designer’s requirements and manufacturers operating instructions; and
government and local government legislation, regulations, bylaws, Health and
Safety in Employment Act 1992 and New Zealand Standards;

Assessment
Those undertaking assessment against this unit standard should note that work in
the industrial rope access industry usually takes place at heights well above ground
level, and therefore requires a relevant level of physical fitness and ability to work at
heights;
For the purpose of assessment against this unit standard, it is expected that the
advanced recovery using industrial rope access system will be demonstrated on a
simulated unconscious patient.
Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Assess the situation involving retrieval by rope, and deploy appropriate equipment.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Retrieval hazards are identified and managed.
1.2
Retrieval system industrial rope access system is deployed in accordance with
BPG.
Outcome 2
Prepare patient for descent.
Evidence requirements
2.1
The patient is accessed.
2.2
The condition of the patient is assessed in terms of airway, breathing, and
circulation, and the patient is made safe for descent.
2.3
Patient is positioned and secured safely for descent.
Outcome 3
Descend with patient and apply appropriate first aid and basic life support.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Descent is in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions for equipment used.
3.2
First aid, life support and patient requirements are applied.
Outcome 4
Set up and use hauling systems for retrieval purposes.
