Primary research utilizing microsphere particles to assess portal blood flow. The project
was carried out at the Genthofte Amtsuhus, Copenhagen, Denmark. Sovak M, Oigaard

Helped organize and establish the first microvascular laboratory at the University of
Pennsylvania. This provided both clinical training and a research microsurgical
environment for Philadelphia.

1978
Designed and built the first microvascular laboratory at York Hospital and established
York as the major replantation center for Pennsylvania.
5.
1989
Participated with research protocol with James May, Massachusetts General Hospital.
A technique for low dose (200U/hour) intra-arterial heparin infusion in elective
microvascular surgery was developed and applied to clinical cases of patients with poor
prognostic factors for patency.
6.
1994 – present
Studied the effect of pulsed magnetic fields on post-operative pain, edema, nerve
regeneration, laser wound healing. I have worked with the Electopharmacology
Corporation as a consultant to help direct them as to the proper application and research
goals for their MRT (magnetic resonance therapy) unit.
7.
1992 – present
Development of a course in Perceptual Skills in Plastic Surgery. The techniques of Betty
Edwards (Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain) are utilized to perfect the perceptual
skills of plastic surgeons. These are applied to drawing, computer skills and operative
technique.

1998 – present
Development of a technique for true endoscopic approach for harvest of the rectus
abdominus muscle. This approach may be applied to reconstructive problems, such as
sternal dehiscence and free flap harvest, and also for endoscopic abdominoplasty.
9.
1999 – 2001
Participating in a prospective study with the Division of Plastic Surgery, Johns Hopkins
University, on the role of computer imaging in plastic surgery. A questionnaire was
developed and patients are polled pre- and post-imaging and post-operatively as to the
efficacy of the technique.

The utilization of tissue adhesives for fixation of cartilage grafts in rhinoplasty.
