BLOOD VESSELS AND LYMPHATIC SYSTEM SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES I. Arteries, Veins, Capillaries SIMILARITIES 3 same layers DIFFERENCES -veins have thinner layers carry blood cells -capillaries have one layer -arteries carry oxygenated blood except pulmonary -veins carry deoxygenated blood except pulmonary - capillaries carry both all are flexible -veins have valves -capillaries are for exchange—one cell can pass -veins take blood to heart -arteries take blood away from heart -arteries have higher pressure than veins -arterial moves through high pressure from heart pumping & muscle contraction from smooth muscle -veins move through skeletal muscle movement & smooth muscle contractions capillary movement through osmotic pressure all have lumen (space in middle) veins lumen larger, arteries smaller all have measurable pressure (force on walls) Movement based on external and internal forces all have smooth muscle layer II. Lymphatic vs. Cardiovascular SIMILARITIES Lymphatic vessels have same three layers DIFFERENCES -lymphatic vessel walls are thinner than arteries Have similar structure to veins including valves Lymphatic structures have similar movement of veins both contain fluid lymphatic vessels are closely associated with blood vessels lymph vessels are very close to capillaries -lymphatic vessels have anchors that help with movement of lymph -called plasma in bloodstream and lymph in lymph vessels, but it is the same fluid III. Lymphatic Organs—see notes to fill in IV, Antigens Vs. Antibodies SIMILARITIES DIFFERENCES
