Overview of Database Gastrointestinal bleeding data is held on an ACCESS relational database on a PC, Gastroenterology Unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. within the The database is accessed via security passwordsand is continually updated with new information and will be developed to monitor vital status. Information on approximately 7,000 patients is held on the research database across 3 record types which are detailed in the Main Table Definitions Section. Each record type corresponds to data collected for three different periods : Table First 3 Years 4th Year Main Data Period Covered October 1991 to September 1994 October 1994 to April 1996 May 1996 to Current Date Gastrointestinal Bleeding Database November 2001 DATABASE CODE: GIB Page 3 Institute of Applied Health Sciences University of Aberdeen Database Structure OCTOBER 91 SEPTEMBER 92 UNIT NO OCTOBER 94 APRIL 96 UNIT NO MAY 96 ONWARDS Gastrointestinal Bleeding Database November 2001 DATABASE CODE: GIB Page 4 Institute of Applied Health Sciences University of Aberdeen Main Table Summary First3years - Patient Details October 1991 to October 1994 Patient Identification, Sex and Age at Admission Date and Time of Admission Time to Endoscopy Length of Stay in Bleeding Unit / Hospital Bleeding Unit Diagnosis Concurrent Illness Alcohol Consumption Prescribed Drugs Smoking Status Gastric Ulcer / Duodenal Ulcer / Oesophagitis History Portal Hypertension Previous Surgery Bleeding Status Stigmata of Recent Haemorrhage Blood Required / Recurrence of Bleeding Discharge Date Mortality Data / Date of Death 4th Year - Details for October 1994 to April 1996 Patient Identification, Sex and Age at Admission Date and Time of Admission Length of Stay in Bleeding Unit Source of Admission Haematemesis Data Melaena Abdominal Pain Weight Loss Vomitting Diarrhoea Drug Details Smoking Status Alcohol Consumption / Abuse Gastrointestinal Bleeding Database November 2001 DATABASE CODE: GIB Page 5 Institute of Applied Health Sciences University of Aberdeen Gastric Ulcer / Duodenal Ulcer / Oesophagitis / Gastrointestinal Bleeding History Portal Hypertension Previous Surgery Concurrent Illness Shock on Admission Haemoglobin Count / Blood Group Blood Pressure Initial Urea Initial Pulse Prothrombin Time Liver Function Tests Rheumatology Endoscopic Diagnosis Bleeding Status Stigmata of Recent Haemorrhage Blood Required / Recurrence of Bleeding Endoscopic / Surgical Treatment Discharge Outcome / Bleeding Unit Diagnosis Total Hospital Stay Readmission Details Transfusion Details Colonoscopy / Sigmoidoscopy / Barium Enema Angiogram Surgery / Type of Operation / Surgeon Hospital Diagnosis Mortality Data / Date of Death Main Data - Details for May 1996 Onwards Patient Identification, Sex and Age at Admission Date and Time of Admission Length of Stay in Bleeding Unit Source of Admission Haematemesis Data Melaena Abdominal Pain Gastrointestinal Bleeding Database November 2001 DATABASE CODE: GIB Page 6 Institute of Applied Health Sciences University of Aberdeen Weight Loss Vomitting Diarrhoea Collapse Drug Details Smoking Status Alcohol Consumption / Abuse Gastric Ulcer / Duodenal Ulcer / Oesophagitis History Gastrointestinal Bleeding / Varices History Co-Morbid Disease Recent Operations Blood Pressure / Pulse Faecal Occult Blood Initial Haemoglobin Count / Urea Date of Rebleed / Units of Blood Given Endoscopic Treatment Colonoscopy / Sigmoidoscopy / Barium Enema Angiogram Ultrasound Scan Small Bowel X-Ray Site of Bleed Date and Time of Discharge / Location / Outcome Cause of Bleed Diagnoses Date of Death Gastrointestinal Bleeding Database November 2001 DATABASE CODE: GIB Page 7 Institute of Applied Health Sciences University of Aberdeen Associated Publications Fraser A, Masson J, Bramley P, McKnight G, Mowat NAG.
