8th Grade Math and Science Curriculum 8th Grade Math Accelerated Class Text: Sadlier-Oxford’s Algebra 1 In the 8th grade Algebra class, students will start out with the basics: working with real numbers, exponents, scientific notation, and expressions. We will then proceed to understanding variables, solving single- and multiple-step equations and inequalities, and solving absolute value equations and inequalities. Once the fundamentals have been mastered, students will be taught to understand linear functions, systems of linear equations and inequalities, and polynomial operations and factoring. The course will conclude with exponents and exponential functions, quadratic equations, and an introduction to trigonometric ratios (if time allows). In addition, the 8th graders will also be preparing for the math portion of the Catholic High School Entrance Exam. This class prepares students to possibly enter Geometry or Algebra II in high school, depending upon the chosen high school’s curriculum. Standard Class Text: Sadlier-Oxford’s Foundations of Algebra This course will solidify topics learned in 7th grade, which include working with rational and real numbers, multiple-step equations and inequalities, comparing and ordering integers, absolute value, and interpreting ratio, proportion and percent. Students will continue with the in-depth learning of coordinate geometry, polynomials and factoring and measuring area and volume of solid figures. Before the year ends, the instructor intends to introduce students to Algebra concepts by segueing to Algebra. In addition, the 8th graders will also be preparing for the math portion of the Catholic High School Entrance Exam. This class prepares students to have a strong foundation to succeed in Algebra I during the high school freshman year. This class meets all California and Diocesan 8th grade math standards. 8th Grade Science Text: Pearson’s Physical Science: Interactive Students will start their Physical Science curriculum examining matter, chemical and physical reactions, and becoming intimately familiar with acids, bases, solutions and the periodic table. They will then continue delving into the physical world with an introduction to the universal theories of force, motion, and energy. Experiments exploring force, motion, matter, and the elements will be done with the class whenever possible. All 8 th grade students will be expected to complete a Science Expo project.
