Monday 6th July 2009
Dear Parents,
SUMMER FAIR
What a super evening. The whole event raised £1200 for school funds. We are very grateful to all who helped on the night
and came to join in the activities.
Handwriting Competition – Prizes for different age groups
I was delighted to distribute prizes to this afternoon to Kate, Emily, Rebekah and Alex. Well done to all entrants.
We Will Rock You
Thanks for everyone’s help in finding the final few items. Mrs Browne has been checking the license agreement and we are
unfortunately not allowed to make a video recording or audio recording of the show. As last year, we will take some
'posed' photos of the cast before the production - you will be able to place your orders for the photos you require and we
will endeavour to get these to you before the end of term. We would require payment (50p per photo) upon ordering.
PE & Sport
Everyone should have their PE kit (which should include shorts, t-shirt and trainers/plimsolls) in school everyday between
now and the end of term.
Town Schools Athletics tournament at the Allertonshire on Tuesday. All those people involved should have returned their
permission slips by now.
Congratulations
A huge well done to Stephanie Gosling for taking part in the Youth Sport Games 2009 at Ampleforth College on Sunday
28th June. After taking part in the Town schools cross country back in October, followed by the next round in Thirsk in
March, Stephanie was one of the few lucky children to qualify for the Youth Sports Games, representing
Hambleton District for Cross Country. She came 31st out of 65, competing against both males and females.
Congratulations Stephanie!
Arts Aspire
The final showing of the Year 4 dance performance will be on Wednesday 8 th July at the New Life Baptist Church. Mrs
Heap will be walking with the children to the venue in the afternoon and parents are welcome to accompany the children,
although we have been informed that there is not sufficient space for all parents to watch the performance because the
children from each participating school will make up the audience.
School Lunch – Wednesday 8th July
On Wednesday lunch will be a baguette filled with either egg, cheese or ham, accompanied by the vegetables and puddings
shown on the menu.
School Photographs
Please return your orders for both the group and Centenary photographs by Wednesday 8th July at the latest.

Thank you for all the returned slips and money for the Y6 visit to Lightwater Valley next week. Thank you also to those
parents who have offered to join us on the trip - we now have sufficient parent helpers to come with us. If you have
not yet returned your slip and/or payment, please do so immediately to ensure that your child has a ticket on the day.

Eagles class have been given the opportunity to choose a meal to celebrate their final days at Applegarth and they have
picked pizza and chocolate sponge. Parents of children in Year 6 are welcome to join us for lunch (the meal costs

Leavers' Assembly - Friday 17th July 2009
Year 6 would like to invite you to their Leavers' Assembly which will be on the final afternoon of term, at 1.30pm.
Library Books
Miss Irwin is keen to ensure the library is fully stocked. If anyone has any library books at home please can you return
them to school as soon as possible. They can be put on the desk in the library to be logged.
Keeping Safe
Finally, we have been made aware from some children that they are accessing ‘social networking’ sites at home. At
school this is not allowed and we are concerned about the inappropriateness of some of the links from these sites and
wanted to make you aware of our concerns.
A small number of Year 6 children are bringing their mobile phones into school as they walk to and from school on their
own. Their phones are stored securely in my office and are collected at the very end of the day. Again some of the
children have told us about older children in the town who ‘share’ photographs at the weekend and after school. You may
wish to check with your child about what is being held on their phones and to let them know about potentially unsuitable
material being sent by older children, and to talk to them about keeping safe. We have told all our children that they
should not give out personal information such as their address, telephone numbers, or the name and location of their
school without their parents' permission, to people they do not know.
Yours sincerely,
Alison Goodwin

After school French Club
Accompanying this newsletter is a slip detailing a proposed after school French club to be held in the autumn term. A
teacher will be able to provide one if there is sufficient demand. If your child is interested please complete the tiny
slip at the foot of the flyer.
The cost will be £50.40 for the whole Autumn term.
There is, unfortunately, an error on the flyer – the club would be held on a Tuesday night (between 3:20pm – 4:20pm)
not Thursday as the letter states.
