2016-17 FLAGSHIP PROGRAM APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS Submit by the Early Bird deadline of May 23rd to be eligible for a special drawing. Our Mission To educate, connect, and energize leaders to serve and improve the community. Why Leadership Winston-Salem? This program has helped to create a more leader-full community by giving participants unique behind-thescenes insights about current needs and issues facing our community and by orienting them to our city’s rich history and resources. Participants are better equipped to assume a more active volunteer leadership role in addressing community needs. Due to program demand and class composition, it’s not uncommon to take multiple application years to be selected. All class positions are open each year, and application does not guarantee selection. Qualifications All applicants must: Live or work in Forsyth County; Have high standards of personal integrity; Show evidence of leadership/achievement in community activities, and/or demonstrate a desire to increase community involvement; Be open to other perspectives, to learning, and to further developing collaborative leadership skills; Be willing to commit the required time to Leadership Winston-Salem (program days, pre-work, and Action Learning); Be committed to using their leadership skills and knowledge for the long-term benefit of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County. Selection Leadership Winston-Salem’s class participants will be selected through a rigorous process by members of the Selection Committee. A primary goal is to ensure the class represents a wide crosssection of the community, with diversity in all aspects. Applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by late-August. Applications must be answered completely to warrant consideration. Tuition Tuition is $2,500 and payable by September 15, 2016. If your company plans to pay your tuition, please confirm approval by having your supervisor fill out, sign and return the Employer Statement of Support. Leadership Winston-Salem has a limited amount of Need-Based Partial Tuition Assistance available. Those requesting assistance must complete the Tuition Assistance Request Form and enclose it with the application. Your completed application, commitment forms and tuition assistance request (if applicable) are due on or before 5:00 p.m. on June 20th. Information contained in this application is how selection decisions are made. Please take time to complete all sections thoroughly, and tell us what is unique about you. The Selection Committee considers how your experiences might mix with others in the pool to enrich the experience of class members. Past community service or volunteerism is weighed heavily; however, a desire to deepen involvement is also considered. Check your calendar, prior to applying, against the dates below for any known conflicts and hold these dates until you are informed of your application status in late-August 2016. “Statement of Commitment” has been signed by you. “Employer Statement of Support” has been signed by your manager (if applicable). All sections of the application have been completed. To complete the LEADERSHIP WINSTON-SALEM program, a participant is expected to attend a minimum of 90% of the program, which includes: An overnight Opening Retreat – October 12-13, 2016 (mandatory) Seven full leadership days scheduled November through May, which run from 7:15 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. A day of project presentations and an evening induction ceremony – June 7, 2017 (mandatory) Action learning project work, individual reading and assigned pre-work between scheduled sessions (An average of 8-12 hours per month, varying in accordance with each team’s choices, which may occur during office hours.)
