Application Deadline: February 15, 2011 Announcement of Girls on Ice 2010 Team: April 1, 2011 Course Dates: July 25 - August 4, 2011 You have been asked to write a letter of recommendation for a girl applying for Girls on Ice 2011. Thank you for you time! Girls on Ice is a unique, FREE, wilderness science education program for high school girls. Each year a team of 9 teenage girls and 3 instructors spend 11 days exploring and learning about mountain glaciers and the alpine landscape through scientific field studies with a professional glaciologist and a professional mountaineer. Please visit our website http://girlsonice.org for more information about the program. What are we looking for? Girls on Ice combines many aspects of science, art, critical thinking, and mountaineering. We want the girls to teach each other in addition to our instruction and the experience. Therefore, we do not choose girls based on their individual applications, we choose the team as a whole. In your recommendation, please consider that we are not necessarily looking for girls with the best grades or the most awards – we look at the whole person, particularly what she can bring to the team. These are the overall criteria for building our team, please consider them in writing your application: 1. Diversity of backgrounds: a range of ethnic, cultural, economic, geographic backgrounds. 2. Diversity of interests and life experiences: what can the girls bring to the team? We seek a balance of interest in science, art, philosophy, social issues, politics, and more. 3. Opportunity: this is a unique free experience and we look for girls who stand to gain the most from this experience. This is an area in which we will specifically look to your recommendation. We hope to provide a challenging experience to girls who may not have as many other opportunities to challenge themselves, or girls for whom this experience has the chance to have a particularly strong impact. 1 Your contact information: Name (First and Last): Street address or PO Box: City and State: Zip: Email address: School: School City and State: Name of girl you are recommending: What is your relationship to the applicant?
