WEDNESDAY PROGRAM FALL 2013 Dear Parents, Program Co-ordinator: Sarah Murray sarah.murray@utoronto.ca August, 2013 The Wednesday Afternoon Program’s fall term begins Wednesday, September 11, 2013 and ends Wednesday, December 18, 2013. Please note that the Wed. Program does not operate on the first day of school. The Wednesday Program is committed to providing programming for your children regardless of the weather. If weather conditions make it impossible for your children to attend their regular classes, they will be given a choice of 2 - 3 other classes. On such days, a school-wide email will go out, notifying parents of cancellations. Also, you may phone Sarah Murray’s cell phone at 647 309 -1573 with any questions. All children return to the Jackman ICS playground between 2:45 - 3:00. For the first time, Baking and Cooking at La Dolci is available to 10 students in grades 4 - 6. If you’d like to spend Wednesday afternoons making apple pie or ravioli, this is the class for you! Another new class for grade 1 – 3 students is Bugs without Borders. Twelve lucky students will have a chance to slide with an African snail, hiss with a coach roach, and snuggle with a giant millipede! Tennis Classes at Toronto Tennis City are available to 16 students in grades 3 - 6. If you’re a tennis lover or would like to learn to play, don’t miss this opportunity! Just Bounce Trampoline Classes are back! This program is available to all students from grades 1 - 6. There are 22 spots but we always have a waiting list. Please return your forms quickly! Clay Design will also return this term. This very popular program is available to students from grades 2 - 6. There are only 12 spots, so please return your registration forms promptly. Drama with Sarah is back! Rehearse and perform a play with Sarah Murray and her troupe of grade 4 – 6 actors. 12 spots are available in this program. All students enrolled in the Wednesday Program eat lunch in their classrooms. After lunch, they play in the playground under the supervision of two Jackman I.C.S. teachers. Students leave the playground from 12:30 - 1:00 for their activities and return for pick-up between 2:30 and 3:00. WEDNESDAY PROGRAM POLICIES The Wednesday Program is an enrichment program operating from 1:00 – 3:00 Wednesday afternoons, when the school is closed. Qualified instructors offer a variety of activities for children from grades 1 - 6. The program operates independently of the After School Program. Please direct all inquiries to: SARAH MURRAY at 416 469-1573 or sarah.murray@utoronto.ca 1. Special instructions must be submitted in writing. (See the Special Instruction Form provided.) For example, we require written permission for a child who is going home alone from the program site or J-ICS. Also, if your child is to picked up by another parent please let us know. We are responsible for the safety of your children and need to know that unusual arrangements have your approval. 2. If your child will be absent on Wednesday due to illness or an appointment, please make sure that the school office (Nancy Boudreau: 416 934-4517) is informed. This is especially important if your child is leaving school after having been marked present in class. 3. Children, particularly younger ones, should be reminded when they are beginning the first day of their activity and which activity they are attending. 4. (a) Fees are due with application. (b) Refunds will be issued up to 2 weeks into term. 5. BEHAVIOUR (a) At all times children must heed the instructions of the adults responsible for their care and safety, including adult students and other parents. (b) Children are to behave in a courteous and safe manner when going to and from their activity. (c) If a behavioural problem arises, the adult involved will speak to the child and parents. The program co-ordinator may also speak to the child’s parents, teacher or School Principal. If the problem persists after two warnings, the child will be asked to leave the program. (d) Children must inform their supervisor if they are leaving the supervised area for any reason. (e) Children must stay in the playground while waiting for the program to begin. TENNIS Grades 3 – 6 (minimum 8 – maximum 16) INSTRUCTORS: Provided by Toronto Tennis City PLACE: Toronto Tennis City (formerly the Greenwin Tennis Club) 185 Balliol St. 647 381-6464 PICK - UP: Students and supervisors take the Spadina subway east to Yonge and Bloor. They transfer north to Davisville, and walk for 5 minutes. They will be back in the school playground by 2:45. PROGRAM: Children have a one hour lesson with professional, accredited instructors. COST: $350 This class will not be offered again this year. BUGS WITHOUT BORDERS Grades 1 – 3 (minimum 10, maximum 12) INSTRUCTORS: Provided by Bugs Without Borders PLACE: J-ICS Art room PICK – UP: School playground from 2:45 – 3:00 PROGRAM: Children will experience an array of ‘Science’ opportunities while focusing on our vast collection of touchable live animal specimens including exotic insects, reptiles, amphibians, arachnids and others. How do you get a skeleton on the outside of your body? Come and find out! COST: $350 This class will not be offered again this year. This program has been highly recommended by Lua Hariri in grade 3. Parents of children in this program must fill out the Just Bounce Form and Waiver JUST BOUNCE TRAMPOLINE CLUB INC. Grades 1 – 6 (minimum 15 – maximum 22) INSTRUCTOR: Classes will be taught by owners Jacinda and Stephen David who have been involved in the sport of trampoline for many years as certified coaches and judges. PLACE: Just Bounce Trampoline Club Inc. 3731 Chesswood Dr. Allen Road and Sheppard 416 635-0206 PICK – UP: Children will travel by chartered bus and will return to the school playground by 2:45. PROGRAM: This place is amazing! Gone are the days when bouncers had to wait forever to get a turn on one big, free-standing trampoline. This place is wall to wall trampolines! And there’s not a metal rim or spring to be seen! For owners Jacinda and David, the priority is safety, and it shows! COST: $350 This class will not be offered again this year. Children must wear clothing with no zippers or buttons. Jewelry must be removed, and long hair tied back. Please provide your child with a labeled water bottle. DRAMA WITH SARAH Grades 4 – 6 (minimum 7 – maximum 12) INSTRUCTOR: Jackman ICS Drama Teacher Sarah Murray PLACE: School Lunchroom PICK – UP: School Playground from 2:45 – 3:00 PROGRAM: Sarah and troupe put on a play! This program focuses on all elements of dramatic production. Students learn about blocking, vocal delivery, period costumes, props, and stagecraft. Come and watch our play on Dec. 18th at 2:30 in the Jackman ICS lunchroom! COST: $350 CLAY DESIGN Grades 2 - 6 (minimum 10 – maximum 12) INSTRUCTOR: Mari Lise Stonehouse is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art and has been a partner in the Clay Design Studio/Gallery since 1983. PLACE: Clay Design Group 170 Brunswick Ave. 416 964-3330 PICK – UP: Children will walk to and from the studio with an adult supervisor. They will return to the school playground by 3:00. PROGRAM: We`ve all seen the gorgeous pieces in the windows of Clay Design at Harbord and Brunswick. Come and learn how they were created! Children will have fun learning the basics of hand-building, pinch pots, and coil and slab work. Mari Lise will guide the children through the process of decorating and glazing their own work. COST: $350 This class will not be offered again this year. BAKING AND COOKING AT LA DOLCI Grades 4 – 6 (minimum 8, maximum 10) INSTRUCTOR: Lisa Sanguedolce has created a thriving business in food education. She attributes her success to the fact that she knows how to make food fun! PLACE: La Dolci 1006 Dundas St. West (Dundas and Montrose) 416 262-3400 PICK – UP: Students and supervisor will take the Spadina subway west to Ossington Station, then take a streetcar south to Dundas. Students will return to the J-ICS playground by 3:00. PROGRAM: Ten lucky J-ICS students will have an opportunity to make: chocolate éclairs, apple pie, pizza, scones, cup cakes, ravioli, linguini, muffins, crepes, and much more! What a great way to spend a Wednesday afternoon! COST: $350 This class will not be offered again this year.
