JOB SPECIFICATION
1.
Summary of the broad purpose of the position in relation to the organisation's goals (its
expected outcome and how it is achieved).
The incumbent is responsible for monitoring patients to assess sleep, respiration and other physiological
parameters, their interactions and the effects of interventions and/or providing patients with appropriate
therapeutic devices including instructions in their use.

Reporting/Working Relationships (to whom the person reports, staff for whom the person

Accountable to the Co Directors, Division of Medicine.
Responsible to the Principal Medical Scientist, Respiratory Medicine through the Sleep Laboratory
Manager.
Liaises closely with medical, nursing, other hospital staff, departments and external agencies in
regard to patient care.
Although initially based at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the incumbent may be required to work in
any site of the Adelaide Health Service.
You may be required to undergo a criminal history check.
A minimum of 24 hours / fortnight is worked, predominantly out of hours and may include long
overnight shifts, evenings and daytime hours.
Must be prepared to attend relevant meetings and staff development / education activities as
required.
A formal performance appraisal will be conducted annually.
Statement of Key Responsibilities/Duties (group into major areas of responsibility/ activity
and list in descending order of importance)
Assist in the monitoring of patients undergoing assessments of sleep, respiration and other
physiological parameters, their interactions and the effects of interventions by:







Assessing the effects of, and need for further intervention following identification of stages of sleep
and patterns of respiration.
Assuming full after-hours technical responsibilities for patients undergoing diagnostic and
therapeutic investigations for sleep related respiratory disorders.
Interpreting recordings and use the information to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the study.
Generating sleep reports.
Preparing equipment, maintenance and calibration.
Identifying and managing quality and content of recordings to ensure they are suitable and repairs
are performed as faults develop.
Maintaining the efficiency of the sleep service by making use of the waiting list as necessary to
replace patients failing to show for studies.
Provision of therapeutic equipment


Fitting patients with appropriate equipment where necessary deciding on the most suitable devices.
Educating and assisting patients in the use of therapeutic equipment.

ESSENTIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (those characteristics considered absolutely

Education/Vocational Qualifications etc.
A recognised qualification or equivalent in an appropriate tertiary, technical or patient care discipline
(TGO-1) or relevant educational standards required for entry to an appropriate Technical study course
(TGO-0).
